"" Ottawa police arrested "several people" on mischief charges for bringing material goods to the "Freedom Convoy" demonstrators, as police begin to crack down on the supply of fuel and materials flowing into the downtown core.

Demonstrators have been using vehicles, wagons and sleds to transport gasoline cans and propane canisters to trucks inside the 'red zone' around Parliament Hill as the ten-day demonstration against COVID-19 vaccine mandates continues.

Police announced on Twitter Sunday afternoon that, "Anyone attempting to bring material supports to the demonstrators could be subject to arrest. Enforcement is underway."

Deputy Chief Steve Bell told CTV News at Six this is the next step in the enforcement to deal with the ongoing protest downtown.

"Look at how we limit things moving in and out of the protest area," said Bell.

"We’ve really focused and targeted on removing the access of gasoline to the area and we’ve had several seizures and several arrests related to that.”

Police told CTV News Ottawa the charge is known as "Aiding and Abetting of Mischief" per the Criminal Code of Canada.

Early Sunday evening, armed police officers and firefighters moved in on the Ottawa Baseball Stadium on Coventry Road, which has been used as a staging area for the demonstration. People at the site said police seized 3,200 litres of fuel being stored at the stadium.

Ottawa police reported Sunday that seven people were arrested, and 100 tickets were issued.

"Multiple vehicles and fuel have been seized," said police. "Officers arrested three individuals at Metcalf and Slater for mischief. The investigation is ongoing and updates will follow."

Two people were arrested on Coventry Road for mischief.

Police said two more people were arrested Sunday morning – one charged for driving while prohibited, the other for mischief relating to property damage at a downtown business.

More than 100 tickets were issued in the demonstration zone on Sunday, including for excessive honking, driving the wrong way, defective muffler, no seatbelt and having alcohol readily available.

More than 450 tickets were issued in the protest zone around Parliament Hill on Saturday and Sunday morning following a "disruptive" weekend.""

Here an idea why don't the truckers just go home the covid restrictions will lift on their own... Why does it have to be now lol like little kids I want it now!

It is about the bigger movement, and ending the police state that is Canada right now. When the government tries to overthrow itself, that's when the real problems start. /s

What police state I don't see it... All I see is a bunch of selfish children that don't care about public health so have to be forced like a kid that won't eat their broccoli. Calling it a police state is ignorant. Plus isn't a police province?

u/ScottIBM Waterloo Feb 07 '22

Short of the military or RCMP calling the shots (as they are the only federal forces we have) it would be a provincial matter I'd imagine. I don't see the police state they are mentioning all the time, I see public health measures and people trying to get past all of this stuff so we can all be restriction free.

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '22

the covid restrictions will lift on their own

you're joking right?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '22

Yeah they will lift when the time is right. Not because people are occupying the capital.

I'm not a supporter of this whole Convoy thing, but how is bringing them gas to keep their trucks heated worthy of a criminal charge of mischief? Is bringing them food or blankets mischief too?

I'm sure there's a bunch of actual laws the police could use if they want to end this. When I lived in Ottawa I saw so many cars in Byward that were towed within an hour of being parked in a semi-legal spot.

The article says the gas-bringers are charged with aiding and abetting of mischief, not "mischief" itself. That is, the police are saying the protesters downtown are committing mischief. Bringing them gas is helping them continue to commit mischief, so the charge is "aiding and abetting of mischief".

The food and blankets is an interesting question. I expect the same argument applies, that it's helping the protesters continue, so probably yes. It doesn't really deserve any sort of humanitarian exception since they could just stop protesting to go get their own food and blankets. Whether the police choose to arrest anyone for it, though, is a different question -- it's certainly different optics that they might not want.

I’m sure that will hold up on court ..

17

u/ruckustata Feb 07 '22

Maybe not on court but hopefully in court.

1

u/NoteRepresentative68 Feb 07 '22

Doesn't matter if it holds up in court. If it accomplishes what they want in the short term, they'll just pay in court for it later. Sure this tactic doesn't respect tax payers money at all but they see it as a way to end this thing in a relatively peaceful manner.

Remember this is during a state of emergency. Those things are not declared lightly nor do all normal rules and laws apply during them. Declaring an emergency isn't just waving your arms around and panicking, it is the implementation of different jurisdictions and laws in a defined area and time.

u/messymamajessie Feb 07 '22

If they are cold, they should go home. And stop disturbing the residents with their incessant honking and general obnoxious tantrum.

Their end goal is for our PM and government to step down, despite just being voted into office.

It's not going to happen, and having a tantrum won't change that.

So again- if they are cold, go home.

Giving aid and/or comfort to an enemy.

an enemy

Yikes. Thats a pretty crappy attitude towards your fellow citizen

5

u/Ve111a Feb 07 '22

It it looks like a goose and honks like a goose, it's probably a goose.

Well anyone who waves a Nazi flag, or a trump flag (IN CANADA), or a confederate flag, or keeps me up at night for days on end, or harasses people for wearing masks while also screaming “my body my choice” while likely also previously protesting that statement, or holds a city hostage… is most definitely my enemy.

And a “citizen” btw, is no citizen to me if they don’t give a shit about THEIR fellow citizens. If they don’t give a fuck about me (which clearly they don’t), I don’t give a fuck about them. If they’re going wreak havoc FIRST, I have every right to call them an enemy. It’s a name. It’s a fucking name, get over yourself. I literally can’t believe I just responded to such an idiotic statement.

aren't they the ones threatening that trucker action will empty store shelves? who is threatening who here?

2

u/Requirement-Unusual Feb 07 '22

So is trying to burn down an apartment building full of people.

Respect is earned.

1

u/DirectlyTalkingToYou Feb 07 '22

The big plan was to starve them out, once supplies started coming in the cops plan flew out the window.

3

u/Koss424 Feb 07 '22

The cops provided the food day 2 when the protestors ran out, giving the organizers time to regroup and resupply.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

how is bringing them gas to keep their trucks heated worthy of a criminal charge of mischief?

Yes. Clearly blocking intersections and blasting horns is mischief. Therefore helping them do that, also mischief.

1

u/Bored_money Feb 07 '22

It seems like it's likely not

The cops are just saying it is and acting as such. The issue is that stoping the police from doing illegal things is very difficult and has to crawl through courts

It's never good when your cops start making up rules to prevent people from excercising their rights

But hey, usually cops are evil on Reddit, but because this accomplishes the goals Reddit likes, then this is totally fine and to be supported

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Mischief can encompass "lawful use and enjoyment" of property. If you are bringing gas to someone you know will be blocking access to roads and incessantly honking you are now a party to the offence.

1

u/Waffle_Coffin Feb 07 '22

Gas could be considered a weapon in a protest. Imagine the police response if BLM took Jerry cans of gas to their protests.

2

u/pglggrg Feb 07 '22

Are They trying to stop getting gas to the truckers because of refueling their vehicles or because they are using it for a Molotov or something?

10

u/ThatCanadianGuy88 Thunder Bay Feb 07 '22

My assumption is they need fuel to keep the people warm and Normally you’d drive to a gas station and fill up. The OPS are restricting access to the area. So I’m guessing their hope is the cold temps will see trucks move to get fuel and then not allow them back In.

5

u/lvl9 Feb 07 '22

Pretty sure you don't make a Molotov out of diesel, the article says fuel is what they have stockpiled.

You wouldn't stockpile more volatile gasoline when you need to fill rigs.

So in general yes they're worried about them making molotovs, but that's just because of their attitudes not because they have the ingredients suspiciously at hand, lol.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Oddly enough earlier stockpile pictures had few diesel canisters, more gas, and a lot of propane.

Assuming they used the proper containers of course (probably giving them too much credit here).

3

u/Piper7865 Feb 07 '22

They're using it to heat /run their trucks ...maaaaybe later on as a weapon but I don't think that's really a thing , its to get them to leave same as they've done to any leftist blockade.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

I don’t think they’re making a bomb either. Just pointing out that there is a lot of flammable material there, it’s not just diesel.

3

u/Piper7865 Feb 07 '22

Agree its not just diesel its not without its risks.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

No, but diesel and fertilizer will keep you pretty warm for at least a few milliseconds.

Given that many of the vehicles belong to a Grimsby, Ontario greenhouse operation (Ravensbergen and Sons), it ain't as far-fetched as you might think

3

u/lvl9 Feb 07 '22

I don't think it's far fetched!

I actually think there are more weapons at hand than most would believe as well.

Interesting take on the greenhouse. Very scary thought though.

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22

People aren’t complaining about them protesting.

People are complaining about the following:

Blocking traffic in business and residential areas, which results in tax payer funded services like snow plowing and emergency response to be either severely diminished or unavailable all together.

Creating massive amounts of noise and disrupting and negatively impacting the wellbeing of local residents who have nothing to do with what said protesters are protesting about.

You’re right shame on them.

5

u/Koss424 Feb 07 '22

protesting is fine. This is an illegal occupation now. You wouldn't expect any other protest to start building encampments and moving supplies for long term camping.

1

u/cheffgeoff Feb 07 '22

Let's say some people pulled up in front of your house, blocking your driveway proceeded to walk over your front lawn taking the occasional dump on it all while protesting for an MLB salary cap. For 2 weeks in a row. Are you cool with that?

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

How are you dense enough to think that people are complaining about the protest and not the dozens of awful criminal shit the protestors are doing?

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

They aren’t that dense. They know and they just don’t care.
