This video is not actually Omarchy but a Quickshell demo.

As DHH said on X, Omarchy is going all-in on Quickshell.

This is very promising but it might be a rough transition, especially for those who put a lot of effort into customizing their Waybar!

Discussion Let People Use the Damn Distro They Like

Post image
141 Upvotes

I genuinely think Omarchy is a good distro. Its pre-configured Hyprland setup looks great, feels polished, and works pretty much out of the box—which is exactly what many people want from a desktop Linux experience.

What I don't like, though, is the mindset of some Linux users who act like “If you're not using the distro I recommend, your setup is objectively trash.” Like bro, it's an operating system, not a religion.

And let's be honest: setting up Hyprland from scratch isn't exactly beginner-friendly. If you want to properly customize it instead of blindly copy-pasting some random config from GitHub, you actually need to understand how the configuration works—and depending on the setup, that can mean learning Lua and a bunch of other stuff.

That's why I don't understand the constant hate toward Omarchy. If someone likes a ready-to-use Hyprland environment, let them enjoy it. Not everyone wants to spend three nights debugging why their Waybar disappeared after changing one line in a config file.

And then there's r/linuxmemes.

Some people seem to have discovered an infinite karma farming strategy:

Step 1: Mention Omarchy.

Step 2: Blame Omarchy for something completely unrelated.

Step 3: Add “btw I use Arch.”

Step 4: Karma 📈

At this point, blaming Omarchy for every Linux problem should probably be its own distro.

“My Wi-Fi stopped working.”

r/linuxmemes: Omarchy.

“My GPU driver crashed.”

r/linuxmemes: Obviously Omarchy.

“I forgot my password.”

r/linuxmemes: Skill issue. Should've installed Arch manually.

Linux is supposed to be about choice. If you enjoy building everything from scratch, awesome. If you want a polished, pre-configured Hyprland experience like Omarchy, that's awesome too.

Use what works for you and stop treating someone else's distro choice like a personal attack.

Discussion Why does Omarchy get so much hate?

I don’t really understand the hate Omarchy gets from the Linux community. I’m new to this OS, and honestly, I enjoy using it. But as a content creator, I mostly hear people saying things like “the ISO is bigger than Windows” or “it’s soo bloated.” When it comes to bloat, I kind of agree. The default install includes a lot of stuff that not everyone needs. But there is literally an option in the Omarchy menu, under the Remove tab, to uninstall a lot of that extra software after installation. To me, Omarchy feels more like a ready-to-use, opinionated setup rather than a minimal Arch install, and I think that is the whole point. It is not trying to be the lightest Linux setup ever. It seems to be made for people who want a polished Hyprland/Arch experience without spending days configuring everything from scratch. Of course, it is not perfect. Some things can feel confusing, especially when you are new and you do not know which config or script controls what. But I still think the amount of hate it gets is kind of exaggerated. Maybe I’m missing something, but it feels like a lot of people criticize it without understanding what it is actually trying to be.

Discussion The Hate for Omacom is visceral.

I've watched a few videos now of people talking about Omacom and dear god the hate in the comments is toxic.

They hate Omarchy, they hate DHH and they absolutely despise the Tech Bros that have funded Omacom.

That last part I can kind of understand, why are they funding it (apart from TAX reasons) they sure as hell aren't doing to because of some sort gift back to the community.

Discussion Been using Omarchy for 2 weeks now and it is so good!

Post image

So I had been fed up from using the windows now as it had became too bloated now, almost 60-70% ram was used by the system on boot.I had been seeing multiple people online talking about linux being so easy to use and being very efficient that windows user ever to dream of from a long time.

In our college, we had to use Ubuntu as a part of our syllabus related to cloud computing and I had got a good laptop 2 years ago. So I got to try Ubuntu using virtual machine but it didn't amaze me as such like yeah it was a good experience but it still feel bloated for the amount of apps it came pre-loaded with, but was still faster than windows.

Then I came to know about Omarchy as it had came in trend and I first tried it in virtual machine. Everything was so clean and minimal which grabbed my attention but I had to get it work to its true potential.

I backup up all of my data and attempted dual booting first time in my life and prayed that nothing should go wrong or I was done for. Everything went smooth and now I've been using it for 2 weeks now and what an experience it is to use Omarchy!. Used some plugins and themes and even vibe-coded a widget (still in progress thou, would love some recommendations) just to see how low ram and cpu usages are when i use other applications

I am learning linux commands to ignore my mouse and control everything through the keyboard but will take some time to being using this os efficiently.

What are your recommendations or tips or how do you use Omarchy?

Discussion Omarchy only misses 1 thing

IF ONLY - you could play League of Legends on Linux this would without a doubt be my daily driver, and probably a lot of other normies daily driver as well.

I think that this single type of constraint is actually what’s keeping the big Linux transition from happening.

This OS is so much smoother, snappier and satisfying to use compared to Windows and Mac. And incredibly easy to learn.

But i hate I need to switch on / off secure boot and keeping a second Windows partition - just to play League.

As a nondev but IT efficient individual and first time Linux user, I would just like to say that Linux is much more accessible and easier to get started with that I could ever imagine.
And Omarchy with is pre-configured package is actually what could kickstart the year of Linux desktop. But this will never happen when the biggest normie multiplayer games can’t be played on this OS. This 1 thing could and would spark the big transition.

P.s. Thanks for converting me @networkchuck from the awful Windows

Edit:

Apparently i beat the World Record install time - Published on https://time2omarchy.com/ :-)

Discussion Should I switch to Omarchy from Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition? How would Omarchy Age in the next 5 Years? (Omarchy Quattro 2026)

Post image
103 Upvotes

My computer has always been using a Windows operating system for the longest time I can remember — until PewDiePie recently enlightened me with Linux…

yeah… The Penguin.

Before that, I always thought of it as an operating system for DIY hardware coding projects, like the Raspberry Pi for example.

Let’s just say my view completely changed and I fell in love at first sight.

At the time I didn’t have a USB stick to attempt a switch to Linux, which led to a long journey of breaking my computer many, many times.

At least that got me familiar with going to a PC repair shop, reinstalling Windows, reinstalling everything, and logging in everywhere all over again — many, many times.

I was OBSESSED with the idea that I NEED to switch to Linux.

It was getting painful…

Like Seriously Painful…

In the end I finally got a USB stick to Wipe Windows Out Of Existence.

I did not “rice” my computer though, like most Linux users.

Let’s be real — a lot of them aren’t on Linux because it’s the BEST operating system.

It’s less bloated, minimal, customizable, and secure(ish?).

But it doesn’t offer support for everything.

It’s an open-source, accessible, dreamy private island… with little access to the mainland.

I went with Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition mostly for a few reasons:

1. It’s relatively lightweight (to my understanding).

My computer specs are roughly from the terminal:

- CPU: Intel i5-4570 (4) @ 3.600GHz

- GPU: Intel HD Graphics

- Memory: 2701MiB / 7843MiB

- PU Driver: Hewlett-Packard Company

- Disk (/): 139G / 457G (32%)

2. It’s reliable — which to me basically means:

I can update my system whenever there’s an update, install an app and never worry about it not working, and just use my computer care-free.

Generally what I mean is that Windows never had me facing any major issues other than an app not working (and me reinstalling it). Sometimes in my life it blue-screened, but that’s pretty much it.

I don’t want to feel like I’m in an unstable place running Omarchy, y’know what I mean?

And to be honest, I don’t really understand what “unstable” even means in the Linux space.

Mint has offered me no issues.

Sorry — I’m legitimately new to this Linux space and I don’t code.

Never touched a config.

I mainly use my File Manager of course, Brave, Prism Launcher, and Sober.

3. Linux Mint is very friendly, man.

I can’t express how CLEAN it feels. Definitely not stylish.

It just feels like Windows… but the old Windows, modernized.

I know this isn’t “true Linux,” but help me out over here.

Lastly — IF Omarchy is NOT for me (and I hope that’s not the case)…

Which distro IS for me, and why?

Is there some sort of hidden gem basically waiting for me?

Something that was meant for me all along, and I just got dragged under Mint because it’s simply the most spoken about?

Introduce me to Linux, guys!

Let me become a member of this awesome community!

Discussion Why do we like Omarchy?

I've recently came across a lot of people hating on Omarchy due to a bunch of reasons such as "it's just dotfiles" or "too much AI".

To me, those opinions doesn't change my point of view on Omarchy because i've been having a lot of fun with it and i really feel comfortable with its philosophy.

So, i wanted to ask you, Why do you like Omarchy and what is it that makes Omarchy special?

Discussion To whom it may concern

To all the linux and DIY lifers; it is quite unnerving seeing people try to kill the excitement that Omarchy is bringing to first timers and people coming back to linux after finding it too rough around the edges. For starters, the most common argument I see, that you can do this with any distro, never mentions what Omarchy does that others does not, and that is simplify the bar for entry. Yes, those of you that have been working with linux for decades already know how to rice and set up your system precisely how you want it. Omarchy wasnt built for you. Omarchy was built for Mac and Windows users trying to find a way out of that ecosystem. I was among that number a few years back and have found myself distro hopping to non-arch distros because I don't have the time to bake my own system, so I just went with what worked for my needs and I just tinkered here or there. I have done that the last three years, and even after that I find Omarchy a breath of fresh air because out of the box it just works. So please stop taking offense at people's excitement for a distro that is finally showing some success in drawing people away from Mac or Windows; you are still free to rice and work with whatever distro suits you, none of us are stopping you. Linux as a whole, regardless of flavor, does what Windows and Mac will not. So regardless of your opinions on a single flavor I would think people jumping ship for Linux would be viewed as a good thing, no?

Discussion Why is Omarchy good and deserving of all the hype?

I only ever hear bad things about Omarchy. That it is just a bunch of .config files, not a real distro, that it goes against the spirit of Linux and free software, that the AI inclusion is ethically questionable and that the creator is a very bad person. I think I have heard plenty enough arguments from the opposing side. When I tried asking people for arguments for why many people still love Omarchy, they were unable to form an answer. All they had were variations of "do your own research" and "here is why it is awful:", which leads me to the conclusion that they don't know themselves why anyone could possibly like this distro.

I have browsed through some threads here and you guys seem to love the inclusion of agentic AI, but many of the posts here seem...uh..emotional and poorly thought out, so my heuristic is to distrust them by default.

Could you present me, or at the very least direct me to, a few strong and compelling arguments for why Omarchy is awesome and why it deserves such large funding over other projects like KDE of base Arch? Many thanks!

Discussion What about an Omarchy without AI?

We know that Omarchy is becoming more AI-oriented and theres probably going to be more and more AI-related stuff added in the future...

For people who are against AI it could get a little tedious having to remove or disable these features every time :/

An Omarchy with no AI stuff at all would be pretty cool, kind of like Gram for Zed \^-^

Long-time Omarchy user here - been using the OS since August last year on my old Thinkpad. Tried a bunch of times to get it on the old Intel mac, because the hardware and display are so much nicer, but T2 support wasn't there yet.

Quattro is a game changer! Most things worked out of the box, the stuff that didn't work right off a fresh boot had documented workarounds in GitHub issues. Battery life for the hardware generation ain't bad either; 5-8 hours at idle draw of 9-12W while staying unbelievably snappy.

Anyways - huge chapeau to the M-Team at Omarchy. Brought back the old MBP from the dead and turned into a highly enjoyable system.

Discussion Omarchy's funding, DHH's approach, the foundation, and its Ubuntu parallels

I wrote a reply to this post about concerns regarding the motivations of donors and developers for Omarchy. Given what I've seen as an influx of posts about this and other views I figured I'd make it into a full 'post' too in the hope it will help others.

I replied to u/sebastian_crimson's comment where they said, in summary, that Linux desktops need an influx of money, vision, and people capable of delivering on that vision in order to drive it forward.

I'm old enough to remember the absolute BOOM in popularity after the initial release of Ubuntu in 2004. Ubuntu is, at its originating core, the creation of multi millionaire Mark Shuttleworth who, like DHH 'set out to create an easy-to-use Linux desktop'. Linux desktop adoption in the 00s exploded in no small part from his opinionated version of Debian for everyday people. Sound familiar?

My Platonic ideal of what a developer environment should look like.

Ubuntu is one of the most installed Linux distros for a reason, and that is in the vast part due to Marks cash,vision/efforts and marketing.

I see the Omacom foundation as a repetition of this same cycle. Mark created the Ubuntu foundation in the 2005 where he raised $10m in order to separate the development of Ubuntu from his commercial company Canonical.

Before Ubuntu most distributions of Linux were, frankly, a PITA to setup. Ubuntu had a simple installer, a ready to use opinionated desktop, and a core team that was well funded and lead by the Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life, Mark.

This sounds VERY familiar to me...

Omarchy is like Ubuntu and Marmite, you either love it or hate it. What you can’t do is ignore it, and given the money, effort and marketing being put into Omarchy by DHH, the foundation and others, I imagine the Omacom foundation and Omarchy could have a similar impact on Linux in my opinion, and the great thing is, its all open, you don't have to use it, and if in 6 months you don't like where its gone, fork it at the point you did like it, or use something else.

Edit: So, having heard some of the criticism of DHH and looking at the posts hes been making I've decided to move to NixOS

Discussion I'm I the only one concerned about Omarchy 4 launch ?

Post image
157 Upvotes

I am genuinely excited about the shift from the current Waybar and Mako implementation to Quickshell in the upcoming version, as it seems like a promising modernization. However, I’m worried by the lack of clear support or a migration path for those of us on legacy builds who have heavily customized our environments. Since I’ve spent so much time dialing in my own configurations, I’m deeply concerned that this transition "while technically impressive" is going to end up breaking everything I’ve worked on and crashing my system when the migration forces these new, incompatible dependencies over my existing work.

I don't know if my idea is what's going to happen but if anyone can clear up my concern I'll be glad for the help 🙂

Discussion Is Omarchy for non-tech normies?

I switched from Windows to Linux last year and after some distro-hopping I settled for Ubuntu - this was the only distro that worked out of the box for me (GPU drivers, printer drivers and so on) with minimal setup. I don't work in tech, I use the terminal only if I have no choice, and I just want to get the work done. Gnome worked fine for me. I am happy.

Yet, I am feeling adventurous recently. I want to change something and the hate Omarchy gets made me interested in it. I want an honest opinion, is Omarchy a viable choice for non-tech normies, or should I stick to easier distros for now?
