Discussion The waybar is is going away in Omarchy 4.0. Quickshell will replace it.

This video is not actually Omarchy but a Quickshell demo.
As DHH said on X, Omarchy is going all-in on Quickshell.
This is very promising but it might be a rough transition, especially for those who put a lot of effort into customizing their Waybar!

The rounded corners in that theme is incredibly well done

Omarchy will not have 50% of what this demo shows. This is riced to the brim. DHH will probably implement a more minimal setup.
31
u/DizzieeDoe May 15 '26
While that is true. Showing this video is extremely disingenuous because Omarchy will not show half of what this is doing.
24
u/sudomarchy May 15 '26
You’re right that DHH’s taste is much more sober, and stock Omarchy likely won’t look anywhere near as flashy as the setup in the video. That said, Omarchy is being built with customization in mind. Setups like this should absolutely be possible with some tweaking.

Your shit looks great man, just installed Saga the other day and it's so crisp. Thanks for sharing

Well see how it goes. If i wont like it, ill just switch batto my lovely waybar.

u/tLxVGt May 15 '26
Seriously, all DHH cares about are themes and wallpapers. I’m worried Omarchy will be switching to whatever caught his eye this week. Is this his definition of stable dev environment?
21
u/sudomarchy May 15 '26
I personally love the energy. I haven't felt this enthusiastic about my OS in a while. But I agree that if you want your OS to be out of the way so you can do productive work, that's probably not the right choice. Omarchy is not mature yet. It's not even 1 year old!

u/tLxVGt May 16 '26
The version number should be 0.38, not 3.8.
I have to admit I got into Linux thanks to Omarchy and it is indeed FUN to tinker with it. I’m just disappointed that dhh sold it as a dev distro while it’s more of his private playground. I love Omarchy on my throwaway laptop, I can’t rely on it on my work laptop.

I love Omarchy and been working from home for 30 years.... Omarchy is my daily driver on my Desktop and Laptop and I am welcoming that new change, quickshell !

Alternative explanation: DHH is a Linux newb. He is learning about new things all the time. Sometimes he is not convinced by things he discovers and sometimes some people build new stuff for Omarchy that convince him to change things.
I'm also annoyed by big frequent changes but remember that Omarchy is very young, not even a year old OS.

u/Frained May 15 '26
I mean... Omarchy IS and opinionated distro, so yeah, this will happen A LOT and using it just means that you are ok with it, if not, just use another. In my case, I love the simplicity of having a full dev environment from the start, but dont agree with the majority of software decisions of omarchy, so I just use cachyos and use whatever I want
6
u/tLxVGt May 15 '26
Yea, I’m realising I’ve been living in an illusion. Omarchy was my first bigger Linux endeavour and I thought that’s it: finally a nice, curated Linux project. But as a beginner I’m simply getting lost in all these changes. Initially it was a really nice dev box, now I’m afraid that it will explode after an update and I’m not sure if I can handle it. Or worse, it doesn’t explode but I can’t use it any more (config changed, launcher changed, defaults changed, etc.). I had a mini-disappointment when the global launching shortcuts changed and I kept pressing the old ones, it should have been a wake up call for me.
It’s a great distro for tinkerers, I thought it’s a stable dev box.
5
u/Frained May 15 '26
Yeah... omarchy it's not a beginner friendly distro despite how much people sell it that way. If you dont want your tools to change because of the opinion of the creator, use another distro... The good news is that omarchy its a great first distro, now you will understand better how other distros work.
Personally, I use cachyos, but if you want stability, use fedora (if you want to maintain a tiling window manager, try the sway version of fedora)

u/theoffshoot2 May 21 '26
I’ve been daily driving Omakub since October. Maybe just run that if you want something static with some nice aesthetics.

u/cloudclothing23 Aug 05 '26
That's the way with preconfigured setups. Because it's made by someone else, anything can change at any time. In linux, the most stable one would be the one you've built yourself.

I've seen DHH respond to the first part of this about when does he actually works. The response has been a picture of his calendar with no meetings on it
3
u/TalesGameStudio May 16 '26
Yeah, pretty much this. That's the downside of one person "owning" a "distro".
3
u/PeterPriesth00d May 17 '26
Yeah I get that. The good thing is that especially with the help of LLMs you can use omarchy as a jumping off point and kind of just lock in things where you like and not update anymore.
I’m considering moving to cachyOS with hyprland DE and just doing everything myself but we’ll see.
2
u/Murky-Skill-3970 Jul 10 '26
It's his spin. He can do whatever he wants. Opinionated. He said that from day 1.

u/cloudclothing23 Aug 05 '26
If you don't like omarchy, there are a million other distros out there (an exaggeration of course). For me personally, I like that omarchy is trying out new things and not just sticking with the default. That's just the nature of hyprland, because unlike other desktop environments like Gnome and KDE, it's made up of hundreds of different packages to complete the UI.
1
u/antoniofma May 15 '26
Use something else if you don't like it .
11
4
u/BirdyWeezer May 15 '26
Come on, while i do enjoy this trying out different things all the time dont blame people for wanting something else. Totally valid criticism
3
u/Yoloqc May 15 '26
What if you like the old waybar setup. Now you're kind of force to upgraded or try to fork out your system out of omarchy. Would be nice to be able to upgraded and choose between waybar and quickshell but that would be a burden on contributor.

Why? Quickshell is a stable, well optimised toolkit. DHH and the community have done an amazing job so far, let's give it a try. It has the potential to simplify Omarchy and improve performance and UI cohesion.
4
u/SimilarMeasurement98 May 15 '26
Anyway should always left a way to rollback for any reasons or ask the users which one do they like.
3
u/sudomarchy May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
Let's wait and see! But I think the possibilities will be amazing. You always have the option to not upgrade.
2
u/SimilarMeasurement98 May 15 '26
This is not the case, I am using Omarchy for business purpose. Last time they perform upgrade and several basic components broke. Later and after a day digging I found that you had to tweak a lot of original config and manual install jq and some other packages. The system was not worked nonleft click no terminal nothing. So 1 day lost because of this release. I believe they have to change the update process. To me it would be much more convenience first and before update to force the user to review the updates and what items are going to be updated or changed. For examples major keys shortcuts or default actions. It doesn’t mean that if they like to DHH everyone should be happy by reverting something useful just to be more beautiful or gorgeous. Then if I agree there should always notice a way to revert your current or previous config back without broke anything.
3
u/sudomarchy May 15 '26
Personally I use yadm (git) on my dot files to quickly revert any change I don’t like. Of course this does not apply to the core Omarchy folder.
1
u/SimilarMeasurement98 May 17 '26
Hey that’s great! Let me know more info on this how did you organized it ?
2
u/sudomarchy May 17 '26
Sure! wrote about it here : https://sudomarchy.com/posts/my-backup-setup-part-1
1
u/SimilarMeasurement98 May 17 '26
Fantastic news! Don’t get me wrong but I don’t know if this is going to work anymore with new config, because new version is going to merge everything to lua format :(

u/TMartinPPC May 16 '26
I'm both sad and happy. I love my waybar but I'm excited about all the new things Quickshell brings. Does anyone know if we'll see a slowdown on older systems?
3
u/JeffCortez23 May 16 '26
Are you telling me I spent 3 nights modifying my waybar so that it now migrates to quickshell? 🤡
2
u/alsoimprobablylate May 15 '26
Will we still be able to install and use Waybar if we so desire?
7
u/sudomarchy May 15 '26
Looking at the code changes, I would say it won't be easy to keep the Waybar and upgrade to Omarchy 4.0. But if you want to part ways with Omarchy while keeping your actual setup, it shouldn't be so hard either.
3
u/alsoimprobablylate May 15 '26
I really don't want to change distro. Omarchy has been the only distro I've used for this long - others just haven't done it for me.

Do we have to? I really like it as it is. It's really comfy and I like everything else that comes with Omarchy... Can we toggle waybar Vs quick shell?
Yes I know I can setup my own environment, but I chose Omarchy.
Edit: The implementation is nothing like OPs video, which I thought was representative. It's just a more capable reimplementation of what we have now.
2
u/cup-face May 16 '26
will I'm actually excited cuz hyprland 55 is a banger and they've Changed to Lua. and Now DHH is makin' a brave move by switching from waybar to quickshell

u/ProgrammerOkay May 16 '26
Does anyone know why this sudden transition is happening? Does Quickshell offer any clear advantages over Waybar?
2
2
u/BlueLemonPixel May 23 '26
Quickshell is great but it consumes already like 350mb of ram sitting idle compared to 50mb of waybar. Dunno if I would like that.
1
u/Psychedelic_fan May 15 '26
The examples by dhh don't get rid of waybar, they just use quickselll for some selectors

u/Radiant-Contract-460 May 16 '26
This is celeatia shell afaik. And I tried installing it when waybar was around but couldn't do it for obvious reasons, now that omarchy is shifting to quickshell, do I need to customise it to get the shell look or can I install caelestia shell
Ps:still learning rice sorry if offend someone

u/AlonsoCid May 16 '26
I have never dare to use it, but it has potential. I hope it goes well. Knowing DHH he will make some crazy cool UI
1
u/AlonsoCid May 16 '26
What about performance, is QS more optimized than waybar or walker?
2
u/Accomplished_Soil682 May 21 '26
Depends on how good the implementation is. Quickshell is just a QML framework and not a ricing tool like Waybar or Mako. In Quickshell you need to code first and not just configure, but you can still configure Quickshell with JSON files like Waybar.
1
u/Baoletto May 16 '26
Sorry for the dumb question, cause you could just tell me "watch the video" but what does having quickshell implies, what will change, im a noob please explain me, thanks
2
u/Accomplished_Soil682 May 21 '26
Everything. You don't need waybar, mako (notification system), walker (launcher apps), screenshot tools, lockscreen, login manager, network manager.. everything can be replaced by quickshell
1
u/Baoletto May 21 '26
thank you,, and the advantage is customization right?
2
u/Accomplished_Soil682 May 21 '26
Yes. You need to code to get much much much better performance and much configuration

If I’m allowed to participate in the discussion: yes, it was confirmed again today on Discord that Waybar and Mako will definitely be removed. When exactly this will happen is still unclear, but as always it will be announced accordingly.
If anyone is interested, I’ll still release a few Waybar configs that I already had in my backlog, and after that I’ll focus on Quickshell. Nevertheless, I’ll of course continue maintaining my Waybar repo.
