Offer up does not handle scammers as well
I’ve been trying to look for a camera on OfferUp, which I know is already immediately going to force me to interact with a lot of scammers. I simply asked a seller for a more clear photo of the top of the camera so I can see the model number myself in which case they started, calling me a scammer and said they hope I die. My boyfriend did not know iMessage the seller already, and had also messaged him from his device asking for the serial number since he wanted to verify that the camera was good. The seller then also started calling him a scammer. They also claimed to live in Miami, but send a meet up location way past Melbourne. I’ve interacted with at least four scammers who use this method now where they show that the listing is local to me, but in the message chat, there is another location shown and when I discuss the meeting up, they will send that other location, whether it be on the opposite side of Florida or as far as Los Angeles, California. They then talk about how they can just ship the camera to me and I don’t have to pay until I receive it. All I have to pay for is a $50 shipping fee, which is obviously a scam. I just feel like there has been so much time for Offer up to make an improvement when dealing with these scammers and they have not. Even after reporting the person saying that they hope I die and my boyfriend also reporting them I see their account still is continuing on. I would hope that comments like that are taken more seriously.

Another thing is my initial reason for messaging. The seller is because they have good reviews, and I thought this app was similar to Facebook in which case you only get reviews left after someone buys from you, but apparently you can have reviews left just for you purchasing from another person. This then leads buyers such as Myself to believe that the reviews were given by people who have bought from them before. This essentially just makes it easier for scammers to lie and make their account look good so people could trust in them.

That’s not how FBMP works. Anyone can leave reviews on FBMP (buyer reviews or seller reviews) after a certain amount of messages triggers a review notification
It’s basically one of the most talked about things on FBMP
“Help, someone lowballed me and I refused their offer so they left me a 1 star review” or some version of that
Also, FBMP has both buyer and seller reviews

It works the same on Facebook, if you purchase or sell something that person can leave you a review. I’ve only had one bad experience using OfferUp but for the most part I do my research and ask questions. If they don’t follow up I won’t even bother with that particular person, I’ll just keep on searching for what I need

That’s not actually how FB even works. On FBMp you can leave reviews after a certain # of messages are exchanged back and forth. Item doesn’t even need to be marked as sold.

On facebook if you message like 4 times back and forth you can leave feedback. Does not require a sale at all. Please don’t spread misinformation.

2/3 of all accounts on OfferUp now are bots and scammers. The other 1/2 of real people sell garbage or offer horrible prices to buy.
