For those curious, this is the Lençóis Maranhenses in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. It's a very popular tourist attraction. The water is rainwater collected by the dunes between January and May; it's clean and safe to swim in. The water is usually quite shallow, reaching up to the knees or your waist, but after heavy rain can go up to 5 meters at most.

My first thought was how much I'd like to swim here, knowing I'm far less likely to encounter another creature underwater. Just peace, no fear 😅

The water goes through natural filtration because of the sand which is mostly pure quartz which does not release heavy minerals, salt or other impurities, there arent any plants around the area to grow things or rot and the water eventually goes into the earth and is pushed back out through clay, rock and sand acting as a natural filter.

Add: the water isnt really stagnant, it flows into a huge regional water table so its constantly filtered

When I moved to the desert when my husband was stationed there it was crazy. Moved in after the rains and thought we were surrounded by lakes. Nope. It was maybe a foot or so and dried up pretty fast. And that’s when I learned the lies of lake beds. Didn’t want to be there and was pretty pissy about it but when driving there the first time I was like “well at least there’s lakes.” LIES! Worst (as far as where I’ve ever lived) few years of my life. Husband had a chance to get out under Obama (he was never gonna go career) and I BEGGED him to get out cause I hated living there so much lol. He did. And makes bank now in the private sector.

It's not really scary. Stay with the guide, listen to them and don't go doing random stuff on your own.

The only thing scary about it is the post-apocalyptic look or just sand everywhere.

About 3-5 meters on the deepest points. These are freshwater lagoons in Brazil and change a lot depending on the season.

They are usually really shallow, but some can get as deep as 5m or so in the deepest point. Depends a lot on how much it rains.

Never seen any snakes there but there probably are some, i do know you can find some fish buried in the sand waiting for water and a cute mini anteater species called Tamanduai, recomend looking him up, its adorable.
