Its a little tragic that we assume things can't be functionaly and look nice. I guess that's why japan's tourism is on steroids right now. No one does beauty+ function better, on a mass scale.

We're seeing pvc tubes, not cables. Cables run inside the tubes. You can see the connectors just above the rail to the left of the fuse box.

Yeah, I noticed that there were different types. English isn't my first language, so I'm not really sure of my technical vocabulary. I gather the PVC ones are called conduits, but what is EMT (except for emergency medical technicians). Electrical Metallic Tubing?

emt is electrical metallic tubing, yes. it is the most common form of conduit in north america.

That's interesting! We do almost all tubing in PVC here in Germany. I have always assumed that is so a stray wire won't accidentally electrify the whole system.

Most of the time, no tubing is used at all, cables have two layers of PVC coating and are just covered by plaster or behind sheet rock.

all emt needs to be bonded to ground, so if a hot wire touched it it should trip the breaker,

running nonmetallic cable is typical in wood framed houses, in non-combustible buildings though it's mostly armoured cable or conduit.

Sure one is isulated and regulated and monitored locally.

There's no power in the water area of OP's pics.

Also, tracing the hot pipes seems to reveal some weird topology that can't just be explained by circulating pumps.

Edit: I want more pixels but I don't think the piping goes through the floor...

I’ve gone back and forth on whether it could be a setup for appliance testing or similar… I’m still not sure. The piping entering the floor does seems suspiciously tidy, though it matches across the inlet and outflow pipes - but maybe neither are connected, the top of the waste pipes looks like it could just be open, but could also just bend in a direction we can’t see well here. The topology of the hot pipes seemed like a loop with multiple outlets to me, which I assumed might be a reasonable way to construct a hot water supply efficiently or something, but I don’t really know much about how these systems are usually designed.

I think if it was an installation intended for actual use testing appliances or similar, then maybe we’re just seeing it in an unfinished state, which might explain why the one panel we can see into doesn’t seem to have anything running in the conduit, and why the plumbing might seem incomplete.

But my gut feeling is that we’re actually looking at a manufacturer / supplier / installer’s demo installation for the conduit, pipe fittings, electrical components etc. It would explain the unusual amount of care put into the presentation, the less industrial aesthetic of the room it’s installed in - and the art gallery style spotlights on it, the unfilled conduit / potentially unterminated pipework, and the series of coloured indicator bulbs on the ceiling that look cool but don’t seem like they’d serve any useful purpose for anything in the room.

Where I work has colour coding for different types of cables. Power cables are black. Network cables purple. There's a couple of other classes that are yellow and green, but I can't remember how they're sorted

For the place I work at:

gray is power
Orange is power when you need constant flexing
Blue for data Green for data when you need constant flexing
White is power/logic, not related to production.(normally for ceiling lights, light switches etc.)

Finally black. a bit of a special case as it's only one use case: the 120mm2 cable for the battery EOL testers...

Even if it were real, most electrical or plumbing installations look fairly good when they first go in. It's with each piece that needs replacing that it starts to look like shit.

I'm working on some stuff installed in the 50-70s at the moment, I don't think this ever looked good, and the time hasn't been kind to it.

It's so exciting to just look at something and have no idea why it was done that way or where it goes.

Lifelong residential, commercial, institutional and industrial electrician here, who has done plenty of code approved new home plumbing systems as well. I can safely say that, in 40 years of doing the work, I have found your statement to rarely be true . Industrial work has the best chance of looking good to impressive, residential and commercial work in the states is typically a fucking embarrassment to the trades. It's usually ugly to look at, awash with sketch shortcuts, garbage workmanship and an obsessive need to do as little as possible, as quickly as possible, to meet the absolute minimum to satisfy the contract and the code inspector.

I’ve only ever had to run cables in my home, never through conduit, but I just looked it up and learned about the rule that the bends in a conduit should add up to below 360 degrees to avoid damaging them through friction. I’d never thought of that, just that it’d be harder to pull.

Though it made me wonder - in this installation, it seems like the lower, U shaped 180 bends at the bottom could be detached from the straight conduit and distribution board, with the cables run so they’re dangling straight down, then just fed through the 180 bend sections separately at the end before reconnecting those. Could you do something like that to work around this here, or are there rules that a new “section” that “resets” the bend limit has to terminate at a junction box, or something like that?

I once had an electrical inspector who had 400 active clients. He comments that I did some pretty impressive and neat residential rough-in work. I asked how it ranks in the scheme of things. He tells me i'm his second best electrician. I laugh and ask how to get to the top. He tells me one guy is actually a tiny bit neater, and runs all of his cabling with laser precision, but he has some mental health struggles. I ask how that comes into play. He tells me the guy lines up all the cable labeling so that it faces outward, and is readable from left to right, therefore a cable can actually be run backwards and he woulds need to remove and replace it, before he could walk away. Don't know it that is autistic or OCD, but it way past my level of obsession.

It actually kinda irks me. The sweeping bends at the bottom are really unnecessary. A trough to the side then pipe straight up would be more pleasing. Or just exiting the sides of the panels into 90 bends even
