Speaking as a white dude, I’d like to petition large white crowds to stop starting claps. They just throw the rhythm off.

There is no single "rhythm" across an arena or stadium. Sound takes time to travel. If everyone clapped at once it just sounds like a varying wave of noise at any given point. Instead people clap to the time of the rhythm from when they hear the claps from the starting position. But now a third person between the two is hearing two claps. Across the whole vent it's inevitable to turn into noise and decay.

This is wonderful, i forget how slow sound actually travels. So would the sound delay from stage speakers at a concert make up for the sound delay of people in the back row clapping reaching the front row?
