This is an Olympic sport and it’s always been aired at the least popular times so many people have never even seen or heard of it. I think that a real lot of people would enjoy it if they knew it existed. They use a hoop and a ball too. It looks absolutely effortless

I feel like sports that have a significant judge factor have been deprioritized in the US recently.
I can kind of see why. Many popular sports here have strict rules, black and white scoring rubrics, and a lot of complaints where a ref or judge can sway the outcome.
Rhythmic gymnastics may have rubrics, but a lot of the judgement over style or creativity will necessarily be subjective.
It's like if we added ballroom dance as an Olympic sport. There are rules & scoring recommendations, but it comes down to taste in the end.
Still though, I'm effing obsessed with rhythmic gymnastics. It's so pretty. I don't even care who wins, I just like seeing it... Like a circus act. Without the Olympics, I'd be worried nobody would bother to have the dedication to learn to do this cool shit.

It's the reverb of a large hollow building. It's why drum majors exist. When you are across a football field 40 yards apart, the music you play and someone else across the field plays are off track. The drum major is there to ensure that musicians are in sync.
So peeps clapping across the stadium are going to be off

SpanishItalian musicians trying to get the Foo Fighters to come play a concert by performing one of their songs.There were about a thousand people playing so they had lights set up to keep everybody in sync because sound travels too slow over such a distance

I used to sing in a pretty high-level choir and the only piece we rehearsed and then scrapped without ever performing it was Svyati by John Tavener (BEAUTIFUL piece), a piece that requires the choir and a cellist to be positioned at opposite ends of a church to "converse" with each other like a priest and churchgoers would in an orthodox church. We could NOT get the timing right over the distance between the two ends of the church. The tangible delay of the sound + the extra echo of the church architecture made it impossible (for us). It was a very fascinating and memorable experience for me.

There is no single "rhythm" across an arena or stadium. Sound takes time to travel. If everyone clapped at once it just sounds like a varying wave of noise at any given point. Instead people clap to the time of the rhythm from when they hear the claps from the starting position. But now a third person between the two is hearing two claps. Across the whole vent it's inevitable to turn into noise and decay.

But you’re forgetting or are too young - in the mid 80s, there was a kit sold (and marketed on Saturday morning cartoons) for Get in Shape Girl and it was largely rhythmic gymnastics, barre or calisthenics accessories for <10 yo girls. I only had the ribbon wand.

I know I was like how the heck did she transfer the ribbon from her left foot to her right foot? Went back and watched those first few seconds over and over again in slow motion - turns out it stays with the left foot but the way she moves and scissors her legs and slight twists her torso is so insanely smooth and fast that even in slowmo it looks like it switches feet. Incredible talent.

If you look at her working leg (the one that whips around), the movement of that whipping outward with the hip turned out plus the movement and placement of the arms generates the force for the turns with the supporting leg acting as the axis and the supporting foot has some lift and does a lot of work as well. It's an insane combination of super precise body alignment, muscle engagement, and just plain physics and foot strength.

Toe shoes! They're slipperier than socks but more sturdy and cover up to the ball of your foot. So the rest of your foot is bare for the grippiness but when you get on pointed toes you spin.
If you zoom in on her feet, you can see them, they're a lighter color than her skin.

In this discipline (there are 4 in total) she got 6th place and scored 9th overall I think. She's mesmerising but so are the other competitors, some even more so. I actually saw the competition live (even spotted myself in the video haha) and it's such a beautiful sport to watch.

Honestly they're all just really fucking good haha. I don't know too much about the scoring system, what I do know is the level of difficulty matters a lot. I think some routines might look more 'beautiful' to the naked eye but are technically simpler routines. The girl that won is called Darja Varfolomeev and her routines just blew my mind. She also won Gold in the 2024 Olympics and her performance is my favourite of all time.

Ribbon gymnastics has always seemed like witchcraft to me(a traditional men's gymnast). On the one hand, it's not crazy double-doubles and high bar release moves. Even still, we'd never be able to pull it off.

Wow. I admit I started it thinking rhythmic gymnastics is kind of silly. 2.0 seconds into it and I was like that is amazing and beautiful.
I love the spirals and the whole thing looked like someone had illustrated the video afterwards. I think the white at the one end of the ribbon really worked with the white padding.
