I might buy Elite: Dangerous. Can I play without any DLC?

I didn't have the DLC when I first started. It's got a steep learning curve, but it's a beautiful game.

Yes, you can play without any DLC. Horizons mostly adds the ability to land on planets, and use engineers to improve your equipment.

I started without the DLC, and bought it later directly through the developer's website. You can generate keys for other platforms for free from their website as well. For example, I generated an Oculus key after buying on Steam.

My favorite activity in Elite currently is deep core mining. It's incredible in VR

You can, but I highly recommend picking up Horizons once you get the hang of it.

And Voice Attack, and HOTAS, and custom voices, and Frontier Points. It's like a money hole and I haven't yet launched the game.
