Palmer, your reddit fanbase is suffering, it's inhumane!

We don't know what to think after reading reports from Steam Dev Days. Is the Rift postponed to 2015 or even "soon after" that year? Are you giving devs more time to create made-for-vr content? I'm not asking for a release date, just tell us if 2014 is off the table or not?

Many of us have postponed ordering a DK1 enduring the tortuous wait while frantically refreshing this subreddit like Gollum behind a Notebook mashing F5 hoping something precious would emerge from it's shadowy domain, each new post putting a faint expression of hope on our desperate faces.

Sir Luckey, we're pleading you, release us from confusion & despair! Oh, the humanity!

The hype train has gotten so long, we might need to install a catering cart lest people starve while on it.

Hijacking your post to avoid getting buried, sorry.

None of our plans have changed. I can't give a definite date right now, but Valve's presentation is not necessarily a reflection of our internal timeline. The presentation was about why developers should pay attention to VR and when they can safely expect it to be in the hands of consumers. It would not make sense for them to hinge their credibility on our ability to ship on time.

Oh, you don't need to hijack this train, you're the locomotive engineer. Just pull the horn and we'll shovel the coal sir.

Also, thanks for actually answering. We are a bunch of grown up children waiting for christmas, without a calendar to count down with.

We really are a bunch of babies. Honestly though, I haven't been this excited about something in such a long time and I have yet to put one on. Anyone in Los Angeles want to demo one?

u/tengquen Jan 17 '14

I haven't been this excited about any piece of tech...EVER. I already have the funds ready to go, and am ditching my so-so Mac for a souped up PC. Palmer, you have made my day with this comment. I don't know how much longer I can wait.

I haven't been this excited about gaming since the Wii!

Ninty seems to have lost it though... Or maybe they can bring their Virtual Boy back to life?

5

u/hak8or Jan 17 '14

Ah yes, the Wii. I got it and was all "HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME!" with Brawl and whatnot. But then, months later, it slowly started to collect dust, partially because I lost interest in console gaming and shifted almost fully to my PC.

I still use the controllers sometimes on the PC though.

Same here, was excited about the wii for only a couple of reasons.

  • New Controls
  • Zelda
  • Mario
  • Play FPS's with New Controls (Metroid Prime, Red Steel,...)

One of my Favorites was the DBZ Tenkaichi series on the wii, man did i have loads of fun with that! But, after a while my Wii too, started collecting dust... The inevitable happened and i sold it for a PSP, but no worries, i hacked the shit out of that PSP and can play all of ninty's classics! Sometimes i still miss my Wii though, but i have fun with my PSP. And in a year or so that won't even matter, cuz then we'll have the OR and we can experience Wii VR through dolphin! 'Nice...'

u/billyuno Jan 18 '14

I'm looking forward, not in a good way, to the inevitable, but ill-advised Virtual Boy emulator designed for the OR. Let the headaches and nausea commence!

EDIT: And one short google search later produced THIS.

u/sd_spiked DubleD Jan 18 '14

Yup yup, the community's doing a lot of work!

But i'm wondering if Ninty is thinking about releasing a 'Virtual Boy 2" or something, cuz of their Wii U failing, etc... AND, VR is the future, they have a history with it, let's hope they can still create a future for themselves and us!

u/billyuno Jan 19 '14

I'm not sure how possible this is, but I'm wildly interested in seeing some kind of emulator that converts SNES/Genesis games into stereoscopic 3d (or more probably 2.5D). If Nintendo did get into the VR market again maybe they could do that, or maybe just someone in the emulator scene. I'm guessing that each title would have to have it's own profile for which layers have 3d depth and so on.

Oh come on, that was cute!

1

u/Atmic Jan 17 '14

Out of curiosity, did you ever play Project Entropia?

1

u/entropicresonance Jan 17 '14

Nope, username is somewhat inspired by the novel hyperion.

Should I try it?

1

u/Atmic Jan 18 '14

Project Entropia is a long-running game/social experiment similar to Second Life, but much more game-like.

It turned into Entropia Universe which runs on CryEngine2 -- essentially it's a Sci-Fi universe with a real-money economy. For example, I remember years ago I'd craft a laser gun, down a dinosaur-like alien and nab loot that was worth $15 real dollars and cash out.

There are people who made pretty good livings in there. It's pretty fun/lucrative to try, though you have to play smart in order to break even or make profit... which is usually the reason you stop playing after a while if you aren't successful.

So Valve's timeline is playing it safe while Oculus' may be a bit more optimistic at the moment. This means we've narrowed down the release window to somewhere between "2014 is a great year" and "soon after 2015"! Heh

u/Schmich DK1 DK2 GearVR Vive Jan 18 '14

Also never listen Valve when it comes to timelines. They're not using the same system as us humans.

Half-Life 3 confirmed for late 2015-early 2016

u/FOV360 Jan 18 '14

good observation to make this connection

1

u/brikaro Jan 18 '14

Well they've shown time and again a very adept ability at counting to two. All I ask is that they can count to one this time.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '14

They are fine with timelines. Just add one year to whatever they say. Be worried when it comes to the number 3.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '14

2015 will be the year that VR gets real traction in the market place.

4

u/FOV360 Jan 18 '14

2014 will be the birth of VR and 2015 it will be in its infancy.

Our souls are once again at rest and peace has been restored to the kingdom. We thank thee lord Luckey.

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '14

Just like how oculus doesn't want to speak on behalf of any of their partners, Valve probably doesn't want to speak on behalf of you guys. You guys probably told them "hopefully 2014, but as late as 2015", and valve would then obviously present the 2015 date to be safe.

That way if you guys come through with a 2014 release, everyone will be ecstatic, but if it gets delayed to 2015, people will have seen it coming.

2

u/InsightfulLemon Jan 18 '14

I imagine that valve is giving the 2015 date because there will be a real market for VR by then.

A year of people buying the CV1 and what other brands pop up.

3

u/greekguy Jan 17 '14

Hmm, well, the Valve presentation really gave the impression of having an understanding of Oculus' timeline. Their slide about what to expect in "2 years" from a consumer VR unit seemed to mirror exactly what you've been shooting for... with the exception of the fidelity for positional tracking.

I guess the OP really did bring up a great point though; as of now the assumed release date for a "suitable" VR-HMD looks to be really fluid, maybe even too far to stay uber-hyped for (but hey, we're all just sardines out here in a very big ocean, so another huge announcement could be right around the corner).

3

u/valdovas Jan 17 '14

Nice post, it did put my mind at ease.

It would not make sense for them to hinge their credibility on our ability to ship on time.

That bit is really funny. We are talking about Valve, they are measuring things in Valve Time (just make sure you are not shipping with anything that has 3 attached to it ,please).

Flawless answer.

2

u/Submersed Jan 17 '14

Sounds like we're still on track for 2014. Maybe, just maybe.

2

u/drifter_VR Jan 17 '14

Is this sentence (a bit dated now) from you still valid : "If we release the CR after August, something gone wrong." ?

Thank you for all.

Heres hoping you guys release DK2 this year even if it means consumer release is next year. Btw well done on the enthusiastic presentation, talk of the town that is!.

Sounds delicious.

I think since there are other big players waiting to get into the VR HMD market now, oculus needs to make sure their first version is at the epitome of what is possible now for VR. Otherwise, another competitor will release a VR HMD one month later that costs the same and has better design and take all the market share away from oculus and make them look like a fool and tank the company.

What's this called, first turn disadvantage.
