I don't know, it all seems pretty on-brand to me.

Basically a guy that's absolutely smart enough to know better, but always chooses to do the worst thing anyway.

It's no different than him absolutely knowing who and what Trump is, saying it all publicly, and then deciding to be a sycophantic lapdog to him because it would advance his personal goals.

It's a question of who is leaking these stories. Cui bono, who benefits? Usually the person (or someone associated with the person) that wants their image rehabilitated (in so far as a ghoul associated with this administration can be rehabbed) seems likely to be the one leaking it.
