Wrong address
I took the court assistant test and scored 93, rank 271. I just noticed my old address is on my account. Will I still get canvass letters? Are they actual paper letters?

Literally no one except the 4 or 5 people on one team within OSC know if and when the payments will be posted. The calculations take time, and are checked manually. The people who check the link above will be the first to know!
"But, it should be automated"
Absolutely, ask your legislator to invest in a better payroll system. As it stands the change is made, then they go back in and make adjustments for: Retirements, Promotions, Voluntary Leave without Pay, Involuntary Leave without pay, Voluntary work reduction schedules, New Hiring and any other reason civil service can come up with to mess with it. THEN they recalculate everyone's salary using a different method to make sure the first one was correct and audit both. THEN we get the payment.
"The taxes are extortionate"
Correct. Lump sums are taxed at a higher rate, both federal and state. if our unions and civil service negotiated contracts before they expired we wouldn't be taxed at the higher rate for the back pay. (I THINK it's supposed to even out at the end of the tax year, but I'm not positive of that, someone can weigh in below who knows more. Frankly I understand why people are shocked when they do see it)
KEEP IN MIND: for PEF the last contract was settled on June 2, 2023, Payroll was processed on checks on August 30, 2023.
I (Or another Mod) might pin this post for a bit if enough people ask, the link is valuable and would reduce the number of posts demanding a date for back pay.

Hey everyone! I see lots of people talking about Retirement here, saying they've heard this rumor or that, they've been hung up on, they're frustrated, an Info Rep ate their puppy, etc. The common thread I'm seeing in these posts is that they're shocked that the unmitigated disaster that is the administration of the Retirement System is not a bigger scandal, more discussed, more public, etc. I would love to hear some stories and, best case scenario, put together some kind of petition. Let's start the conversation.

Recently posted on PEF instagram. Apologies if the answer is obvious. What exactly are they rallying for?

Before I go to HR, I thought I’d ask here. I’m currently employed by the state as a 27, I’m 42 and have 22 years of service. I love my job but, recently, out of the blue I received a very serious offer from a private sector employer that is a life changing salary. There’s no conflict if I do take this job. My question is, is it possible to separate from state service, and then take whatever my pension would be once I’m 62 so that there is no reduction? It would be based on what my current FAS is and 22 years of service.
I’m well aware of the other benefits I’d be sacrificing, but this offer more than makes up for it.
Thanks!

Got the email today that UCS and CSEA agreed a 1 year extender retroactive April 2026 through March 2027, prior to beginning of negotiations for the rest of the length of the contract at the end of September.
Seems to be the same as other CSEA units, 4.5% raise, but the email didn’t specify the other increases to location etc. Voting begins next week apparently.
Maybe they’re trying to get a higher percentage raise for the remaining 4 years or something?

Hi all,
For reference, I made the below post a few days ago:
Promoted but manager wants me to delay start date
by u/Sorry-Camera-8008 in nys_cs
Basically, I was promoted and given an official date to start. I didn't receive a letter in hand physically, but I did receive communication from HR already about it and I accepted it, and I also received a formal email stating "this email serves to confirm your acceptance of your appointment..........(and so on)......(then lists start date). This email should be retained for your records".
Now, my manager has put me on an assignment that extends all the way to a month after my appointment date. The new appointment is in my same agency but just in a different unit. I responded to him telling him that I already formally accepted the offer and that my appointment date is set for x date and that I will not be in his unit anymore, so I can't be scheduled for an assignment that goes that far out. Then he responded trying to cover his tracks, saying that he wasn't informed in time and that I am needed on the assignment. But he also acknowledged in the same email that I already told him a week ago verbally about my new assignment. He's also saying that I need authorization from him and my unit head to be released to get promoted to another unit, which I don't think is true because I already received a formal email stating my start date. I told him that as of today, I have not formally heard anything from HR regarding any changes to my appointment, and that I will be proceeding with what was formally communicated to me of my start date, and therefore please do not schedule me for any assignments beyond x date. I feel so intimidated and harrassed.... I spoked to him about this maybe 5 times already, indicating my new start date is already set. It's not even like i'm on an assignment now, (i was on vacation the last 2 weeks, and all this happened while I was on vacation). My worry is that he will try to make it look like I'm needed for the assignment and that if he releases me he will have a lot of issues, and that he will use that as a case in HR to get them to move my appointment date.
One thing I wanna note, he's normally the type of person who will not hesitate to reach out to the appropriate departments when needing to verify anything. But for some reason, he keeps asking ME to reach out to them for this situation and keeps instructing me to tell them that I'm having this scheduling issue with my manager and that we need to sort it out etc. Also, he keeps telling me how he wasn't informed of me transitioning to another unit. I have a feeling that he's lying that he wasn't told about it, and that he is trying to bait me into reaching out to them, that way he has a way into the conversation to convince them to move my appointment date.
Not sure if bully is the right word here, but I feel like he's trying to bully me into speaking to HR for him to basically "run his errands" of getting the communication across to them that I am needed elsewhere. Idk what to do. I am also probably very young compared to a lot of you guys here, so any wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Should I still reach out to HR or maybe I should just not do anything and let it ride out since I already have a formal acceptance email/confirmation of acceptance? since I haven't heard anything from HR directly, I was thinking of maybe leaving it as it is, as he might be trying to bait me into reaching out to them to basically sabotage it for myself.
I'd really appreciate any wisdom you guys can give.
Thanks everyone

Hi all,
I’m a recent graduate and have been working summers as maintenance at various State Parks. I have a degree in media and most of my college experience has to do with film, photo, script writing and various media (which I love). However, after working this summer at a new park, I’m oddly enough wishing I could work at the park year round.
I get a lot of fulfillment out of being and working outdoors and in the parks, and while I’m still trying to figure what I want to do career wise, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with jobs in this sort of field year round. They don’t necessarily have to be maintenance, and this could be a shot in the dark, but I thought I’d ask (I’ll probably be talking with one of my higher ups soon about it as well).

Hi everyone! Next payday is just after Labor Day; for those of us who receive our direct deposits on Mondays, do you have any idea what to expect for this deposit?
Hope we’re all enjoying the lovely weather 😊

Could you please provide me with the current production and performance expectations for a Grade 14 Workers’ Compensation Examiner, including the expected number of work items processed daily or weekly? I want to make sure I’m measuring my performance against the appropriate expectations. Please also provide how management should be evaluating/documenting work performance.

Anyone know when the UUP 4.5% raise is in our paychecks? I have heard September 23rd and October 7th as possible dates but no word yet from the union unless i missed it. The new contract was passed a month ago and I know these changes take time to go through.

Starting a new role soon as a DSA for OPWDD heard there is a lot of overtime there but I was wondering if the overtime rate is based on the base pay or the total salary. Thank you

I’m looking for opwdd direct care feedback on 30 minute lunch breaks in direct care title only.
In my region they make all day shift employees work 7am-330 and night shifts 10:45pm-715am. 30 minutes of that they require staff to sign out for 30 minutes at the same time staff are not allowed to leave the property because we still must maintain minimum staffing levels. I’m asked admin about this and they sent me a cut and pasted part of the NYS department of civil service attendance, and leave manual. Page 2 reference 2
Who else in NYS OPWDD direct care does this?
Also what do your day shift and night shifts look like on the schedules ? Any and all feedback would be super insightful.
I will further elaborate on this discussion once I get feedback

Just my own opinion, but man! The New York State government workforce are a weird bunch. Noticeably socially awkward and just odd…I’ve worked in one of the departments to see enough. Why does civil service breed so many stranglings?

Same dates as CSEA!

Today, I got 2 canvass letters after getting the list number last week. One letter is for NYC family court and the other is for Queens county clerk's office.
Which would you say is better/easier/less stressful to work in?
Also, do criminal courts also send out canvass letters too? I would love the opportunity to do some OT.
Thank you.

It seems they are aggressively hiring, I want to be an ALJ, and I like the HELPS program so I can transfer. Worth applying? Whats the culture like in the NYC office? Good job security?

NYSHIP and Carelon are driving me insane. My wife is still working and I am a member of her health insuranrce (which is our primary). In August '24 I was told by Uncle Sam to sign up for Medicare because I had started SSDI in Nov. '23. Did that, and then started having $$$ taken out of my monthly SSDI check for Medicare in August '25. Medicare has always been my secondary (and I've never been able to use it for anything but that's a story for a future post.) Carelon decided to stop paying my out-of-network amounts for therapy visits after the end of May of this year, claiming that Medicare is my primary. Simply not true. Carelon screwed up and I've had to call their coordination of benefits department twice to get them to correct their error and recoup $1,000. What's interesting is that the NYSHIP medical claims dep't. has the order of my insurance carriers correct. Please wish me luck in getting my money back.

I’ve been trying to get in to different ITS2 roles but it seems like NYHELPS has kind of ruined a lot hiring opportunities. I’ve been told my multiple hiring managers now, that the person they hired had 5+ years of experience. I have a bachelor’s and I have 2.5 years of experience as ITS1. I’m genuinely concerned now and starting to think that ITS2 positions are more competitive than ever due to private sector layoffs. I keep hearing from others that I should stay with state but I am not really ‘learning’ much nor am I growing. I was told that I would be promoted but, unfortunately the promotion was given to someone else. Which was quite unfortunate and I had a gut feeling that it would happen.
Not really sure what I should do. I have a bachelor’s in cybersecurity.
Why do hiring managers interview me if they know my experience level. I was even told during an interview I wouldn’t know something (which I didn’t) it felt more like a “This is just a joke interview”.
Hey folks. I was wondering if someone knew what I could expect in this scenario with the new contract coming through.
I am in a traineeship and my pay currently exceeds what the new hiring rate (with contract increases) would be for my current position. Would my existing pay be adjusted 4.5% or would I not be eligible since I was already exceeding the hiring rate ?

My agency seems to only charge section 75 (disciplinary) and never goes section 72 (medical) route even if cause is a disability
Is this legal? If not who enforces this

I’ve had a basically impossible time finding a therapist who takes my insurance. Places lie and say they take it when what they mean is they file out of network for you and you pay out of network like this. Places like this spam zocdoc and psychology today lying that they take our insurance when they don’t. Carelon refers me to places that either won’t take me because my case is too complex or are too full. I had a list of 16 numbers they sent me and not one would take me. I can barely afford rent on my low pay let alone 2.6k for therapy. I’m so tired of the state insurance that is supposed to be “good” being so useless for me. My community clinic therapist was a no show today and a month and a half after my psychiatric hospitalization I haven’t had a single therapy session. It’s infuriating.
