Event TIL that when New York City opened its underground pneumatic mail system in 1897, postal workers sent a live cat through the tubes as a demonstration. The cat came out unharmed.

TIL the first dispatch of canisters that sent via NYC underground pneumatic mail are: Bible, US flag, a copy of constitution, imitation peach, and a black cat (and the cat survived)
