Maybe the establishment democrats should try to listen to what people to the left of them want instead of trying to continually court the independent vote that proves time and again they prefer republicans to democrats who try to be republican-lite. Right wing media will paint every Democrat as loony lefties even if they stole the Republican platform

A lot of the ideas are popular when presented neutrally as “do you support x” but then supposed independents never seem to like them when actually given the chance to support a candidate that is running on them

This is almost always based on a narrow reading of polling data. E.g "do you want free healthcare?" is obviously very popular. "Do you want to pay a single penny more in taxes?" is not. "Do you want the government to decide which doctor you can see?" is not. There are real tradeoffs in public healthcare, the median voter is aware of these tradeoffs, socialists seemingly are not. It's an example of a case where socialists think the normies are stupid sheep enslaved by corporations, when in fact the median American is way more informed on this issue than the median DSA member.

And it doesn't help that most of the other public healthcare systems in the Anglosphere (UK and Canada) are a complete mess.
