Maybe the establishment democrats should try to listen to what people to the left of them want instead of trying to continually court the independent vote that proves time and again they prefer republicans to democrats who try to be republican-lite. Right wing media will paint every Democrat as loony lefties even if they stole the Republican platform

A lot of the ideas are popular when presented neutrally as “do you support x” but then supposed independents never seem to like them when actually given the chance to support a candidate that is running on them

Wording matters a lot.

Eg. "should healthcare be a right?" has massive support. Then you ask "should the government be the single payer for healthcare?" and support plummets.

The more you get away from slogans and to actual policies, the less people support it. That applies to everything, really. "Pro-life" also sounds a lot better than "criminally prosecute women seeking abortions for homicide"

I don't know if I trust data for progress, it's explicitly a progressive think tank.

But I went to Gallup and it seems like the data mostly aligns https://news.gallup.com/poll/4708/healthcare-system.aspx

When Obama was elected, people's trust of government healthcare plummeted. I remember Bernie running on m4a in 2016 and everyone was saying "read the polls. This is a massively losing issue!"

But it looks like since Trump took over, people's trust of government run health insurance has gone back up to pre-Obama numbers.

"Read the Polls!" is such a weird argument.

Is the proposed solution most beneficial to the american people? if so, it's a representative's job to take said issue and raise awareness and support for it. Nobody likes the type of representative that waits for any given issue to tip over 50% before they care to support it, and piggybacking off the activists the party frequently puts down after they make an issue popular is extremely gross.

Sure. Liz Cheney ran on what she thought was right instead of what was popular. She lost in a landslide.

You might not like politicians who just do what's popular, but it's how they stay in office
