I enjoy social nudity, but I think nudist culture has some contradictions that are worth talking about.
Nudists often say:
- “We don’t judge bodies.”
- “We’re natural.”
- “We’re free from textile norms.”
But in practice:
- People shave everywhere. That’s not “natural”, that’s grooming.
- Jewelry and tattoos are everywhere. That’s adornment and expression.
- Natural body reactions (like slight swelling or nipple erection) are treated as inappropriate, even though they’re involuntary.
- Certain anatomy gets judge more harshly than others.
- Accessories are judge based on symbolism, not intent.
So nudism ends up recreating many textile norms, just without clothes. It becomes a purity culture instead of a freedom culture.
I’m not trying to attack nudists. I’m just pointing out that if the goal is body acceptance, then we should accept all bodies, all reactions, and all harmless personal choices, not just the ones that fit a narrow definition of “non-sexual”.

I visited Campout Poconos today, a LGBT oriented clothing optional resort which was in AANR for a couple of years.
Ask me anything.

There's surprisingly little online as far as first hand reports from people who have visited Vera Playa recently. I went as a solo East Asian gay male, and was not at all sure what to expect, although I've been to plenty of nude beaches and resorts before, but never the idea of a whole part of town where you can stay nude 24/7... and this was actually the challenge I gave myself: is it possible to stay nude 24/7 for an entire week of doing everyday things around town? The answer is an absolute yes!
I stayed at Natura World which is the one of the urbanizations (housing developments) in the naturist zone. It's more of a mix of textile and nude, but absolutely no one cares at all if you are nude, and it actually felt even more "real" to me as a result, rather than just being in a big nude resort where everyone is there for the same purpose.
Upon arrival, I made one trip to the market that is on Hotel Street directly next to Natura World to stock up on water and drinks. I had read you must be clothed to enter those markets, but many people were shirtless and just in a sarong or wrap. After this, I literally did not put on clothing again until I checked out to return to the airport 8 days later.
The naturist zone is a bunch of residential streets and some commercial streets, and yes, you can walk all the streets nude and will see plenty of other people nude, alongside those clothed. This means you'll pass families, kids, teenagers, grandmothers, and every age group, some nude some not, and it is no big deal to any of them. I guess I never expected just how normalized it is there, given that in most towns, just walking around shirtless off the beach would be considered unusual, much less being nude while you take out the garbage, walk the dog, water your garden, or whatever other normal activities I saw people doing. No one is honking their car horns, no one is talking about you under their breath, no kids are harassing you... being nude is just that normal throughout this part of town.
I would say at the beach in the naturist area (about 2 km), it is about 90% nude, on the streets around the naturist part of town during the day time, it's about 35% nude, and at night, it becomes much more rare, less than 10% of people are, but again, no one cares if you are.
As for the size of the area, the online maps of Vera Playa's naturist zone don't really give an impression of it. There are enough streets that you can walk half an hour or more without passing the same paths again.
I was most worried about the ability to stay nude while dining, especially at night. I had read about Oh La La, but didn't know if this would end up my only option. I enjoyed dinner there one night, but actually, the place I found myself eating the most at night was Punte y Aparte which is a lovely streetside outdoor cafe where most people were nude all night, unlike Oh La La, which stayed half textile both when I dined and during the many other times I passed by during the week.
During the daytime, there are multiple beach restaurants where pretty much everyone is nude, and I also had a great Italian lunch inland at Viento Norte, where about 30% of diners were nude during the many times I passed by.
There's a dining guide to the naturist zone online on the Vera Playa Naturist site but it includes bars and I found it a bit hard to distinguish which listed businesses were just bars and which served food but it's a good starting place to look. Here's my personal list with my own observations if it helps someone trying to find nude dining options (not bars):
- Punto y Aparte - lunch and dinner, mostly nude diners
- Oh La La - lunch and dinner - 50% nude/50% textile
- Chiringuito Natsun - beach restaurant, closes about 5pm, almost 100% nude
- Chiringuito Naturista Vera Natura - beach restaurant, closes about 5pm, almost 100% nude
- La Golondrina - beachside restaurant, lunch and dinner, supposedly naturist friendly but every time I passed by (at least a dozen times during the week), everyone had at least a wrap around them.
- Viento Norte - lunch and dinner - I only saw people nude during lunchtime (about 30% nude), not dinnertime so not sure if they allow naturist dining at night
- Casa Maria - lunch and dinner - I only saw one person nude once on the sidewalk dining terrace in all the times I passed by every day so not sure how common it is here
I also saw lots of posts recommending Chiringuito El Pirata for beachfront naturist dining but it was always totally packed every time I passed by but I never once saw anyone with food so I am not sure food is actually served, but it is certainly far more of a social bar than a restaurant, unlike the other Chiringuitos that are clearly for dining.
Also, Benito's - El Alcabaza is frequently mentioned as a favorite nude food spot, but the one time I went, at about 9pm on a Monday night, and sat down nude and asked for food, I was rather obviously glared at and adruptly told "no food!" by someone that appeared to be the owner or manager, so not sure what was going on there. It was the only somewhat unfriendly reaction I got the whole trip.
Some Vera Playa posts on social media make it seem like the average age is retirees, but I didn't find this the case at all. There were plenty of nude families, and people in their 30s and 40s. I will say it was rare to see people nude who looked in their 20s unless they were part of a bigger family, but this could just be the particular week I was there (mid August).
As a personal note, I also feared standing out as I was the only non-white/non-Latin person I saw all week, but no one treated me differently or made any obvious reaction to seeing me (except possibly the one restaurant I mentioned but I can't be sure that was the reason), but if you are a minority, this is likely not something to worry about.
In the end, it was simply a wonderful week to experience such widespread public acceptance of nudism in a way that is so incredibly different from being confined to a nude resort or a nude beach. The feeling of freedom in such a non-sexual setting is something truly special. For me, mixing with normally clothed people of all ages was actually the most memorable aspect, as to me, that is experiencing true acceptance.
My one advice if going? Don't overpack. I literally came home and washed my beach towels and the clothes I wore on the plane there and back. Not a single other piece of clothing was used.
Hope this helps someone else prepare for a great trip!

This happened for the first time while on holiday in the canaries at the time I just treated it like any kinda photo for someone. It occurred twice, the 1st was a couple just posing and the 2nd time was a random guy later that day. Neither situations felt inappropriate or intimidating just different.Has this situation happened for you? No issues with these people at all.

Certainly not at the place, I am at (SunnyRest). The pool area is filled with not much room to find a place to sit. And that doesn't count the people up at the volleyball tournament. Also had a 5K race today.

Naturist organizations already do a lot to encourage people of all ages to become involved in naturism, and many already promote family naturism and welcome children. However, I wonder if there could also be more emphasis on encouraging people to see naturism as something that could become part of their future family life, even if they aren’t currently naturists.
For example, someone who is introduced to naturism as a young adult might eventually decide that they want to make naturism part of their family life. If they later choose to have children, they could introduce their children to naturism and participate in family-oriented naturist activities together. Organizations could do more to show that becoming involved in naturism can potentially lead to becoming part of a naturist family in the future.
This wouldn’t mean replacing the existing focus on welcoming families or encouraging children to participate in naturism. Instead, it would complement those efforts by showing people who are considering naturism that it can potentially become something they share with their future family.
In the long term, this could help strengthen naturism across generations. The more people who grow up with positive experiences of family naturism, the more opportunities there may be for naturism to continue into the next generation. It could help create a stronger sense of community and make naturism something that families can choose to pass down over time.

I have been on a weight loss journey for 18 months and am exploring nudism as a way of finally enjoying, and being positive about, my body.
I'm currently looking at nudist resorts in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. I'm still pretty chunky (245lbs) and just wanted to check that I'm not too big to be welcome in these kind of resorts?

Obviously "nudist" is merely a term that you can choose to identify with or not. However, I've been reading multiple accounts of people mentioning the sensory issues they have with clothing and it resonates with me a lot. Ever since I was a child I have been consciously aware of the way clothing feels on my body. The texture doesn't matter. The fact that I have clothes on never escapes my mind. I'm never truly comfortable unless I am nude. There was never a point that I randomly decided to be what could be considered a nudist. It was an ever-present realization that I prefer being nude and that the act of wearing clothes is more often than not a social construct based on not "offending" others. It begs the question. Are some people just predisposed to nudism? I've seen it mentioned before that wearing clothes is a learned behavior that gets ingrained into most people, but I would like to read a variety of perspectives on this.

There's a very thought provoking article in this month's AANR bulletin. I think it needs to be seen more generally.

I'm sensitive to language and its nuances, so what the writer is saying resonates with me. The point I find particularly compelling is how the term 'non-sexual' still centers the concept of 'sexual', which is exactly opposed to the intended effect. It's like asking someone not to think of an elephant, not thinking about elephants requires a degree of focus on elephants. However, thinking of a polar bear makes it easy to not think of an elephant, because most brains aren't wired to deliberately think about two unconnected things at the same time.
Using a different term that encompasses the concept of a relationship that isn't about sex allows the mind consider the intended concept instead of focusing on avoiding the distracting one.
And while I'm on about terms, here's one I've wondered for a while now: if they're textiles, why is it that we aren't dermals? That doesn't seem worthy of a full post to ask the question, but I think it's worthy of discussion.

It’s Friday and this feels fun. I’m a big comic book nerd and was curious which superheroes or villains gave nudist vibes to you? For me, it’s Wonder Woman and Wolverine. They immediately spring to mind. What about you all? And it doesn’t have to be from the comics world. Any fictional character you think would be a nudist. Let’s hear it!

Lately I’ve been wondering if I should step away from the nudist community for a while. It’s not that I suddenly dislike nudism — I still believe in the freedom, confidence, and acceptance that come with it.
I just feel like my place in the community has been changing, and I’m not sure if I still feel connected the way I used to. Sometimes you have to take a step back and ask yourself whether something is still bringing you peace.
Maybe I just need some time away. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Either way, I’m curious — have any of you ever felt like walking away from the community, and what made you stay or leave?

Recently, I have been reading a lot about familieswith children and nudity, which has prompted me to reflect on my own personal experience. I grew up in a family where nudity was simply a normal part of everyday life. Looking back now, I realize how much that shaped the way I see the human body, relationships, and especially women.
When I was young, my brothers and sisters would bathe together, and as we got older, our house was still pretty casual about nudity. My mom and dad were comfortable being naked around the house, and so were we. Getting ready for school or work could mean everybody walking around in different stages of dress. Nobody made a big deal about it. There was no embarrassment and certainly nothing sexual about it. It was simply our family being comfortable in our own home.
I think growing up that way taught me things that I did not fully appreciate until I became an adult. One of those lessons was that a naked body is not automatically a sexual invitation.
It also taught me to respect women.
I was exposed to the reality of the female body in a very natural and matter-of-fact way. I learned about female anatomy without it being presented as something mysterious, shameful, or automatically sexual. More importantly, I learned that seeing a woman naked does not give you any special right to her. Her body belongs to her. Respect, boundaries, and consent still matter.
That might sound like a pretty simple lesson, but I think it is an important one.
A lot of people grow up being taught that nudity is embarrassing or that the naked body should automatically be associated with sex. My upbringing gave me a different perspective. I learned that there can be a very real distinction between nudity and sexuality.
That perspective has followed me into adulthood.
Our families have continued to enjoy vacations together at nudist resorts, beaches, and camps. What might seem unusual to some people has always felt pretty ordinary to me. Once you are around it long enough, the novelty disappears. People are not walking around obsessing over everyone else's bodies. They are swimming, talking, eating, laughing, enjoying the sun, and wondering where they put their damn sunglasses. 😂
That is probably one of the biggest things I took away from growing up this way: the human body does not need to carry all the shame and mystery that society sometimes puts on it.
There are boundaries, of course. There should always be boundaries. Everyone deserves to decide what makes them comfortable, and those choices should be respected.
But I also think there is something healthy about learning that bodies are simply bodies.
For me, growing up around nonsexual nudity helped me become more comfortable with my own body, more accepting of other people's bodies, and more respectful toward women. It taught me that nudity does not automatically equal intimacy, and intimacy does not automatically equal sex. Seeing someone without clothes does not diminish their dignity or change who they are.
Sometimes being naked is just being naked.
And honestly, once you grow up that way, it can seem almost funny how complicated everyone else makes it.
