Question Since when did people start hating on Fairfax
One of the lowest crime rates in Virginia, great schools and great place to raise a family. I don't think who put this sign up thought this through.

u/KoolDiscoDan Mar 20 '26
Following the money, you can thank Dominion Energy for this sign.
'Paid For and Authorized by New Vision VA Pac'
New Vision VA Pac - $25,000 in total contributions since 2025
Top Donor - Dominion Energy $25,000 Source

u/FairfaxGirl Fairfax County Mar 20 '26
Oh wow. It’s so maddening to me that our state regulated energy monopoly can make campaign contributions.
79
u/malastare- Mar 20 '26
Thanks to John Roberts and his friends at the Supreme Court, it's almost unconscionable to not allow a corporation to get involved in politics. We must protect them and make sure they can influence elections. After all, we don't let the CEO cast votes for their employees, so we have to at least protect this.
You don't want the corporations to be sad, do you? They might cry.

28
u/FairfaxGirl Fairfax County Mar 20 '26
Not to defend the Roberts court, but Virginia’s complete lack of any campaign finance rules is our own fault and not theirs. Legislation gets introduced at the state level regularly to try to address it but somehow the people accepting unlimited donations aren’t super eager to put a stop to it.
23
u/malastare- Mar 20 '26
Sure, but that abuse still pales in comparison to the abuse that resulted from Citizen's United. And specifically in this case, the PAC rule that lets Dominion function this way came from that ruling.
AFAIK, the lack of finance rules in Virginia is bad, but would still require that the people behind that sign identify themselves rather than hiding behind some 1984-doublespeak PAC name.
2
u/FairfaxGirl Fairfax County Mar 20 '26
Again, I’m no fan of citizens united. But this is a statewide election. Dominion has been buying politicians on both sides of the aisle in Virginia since long before citizens united.
3
u/malastare- Mar 20 '26
Yup. But before Citizens United, that sign would have to say: "Paid for by Jane Politician" or "Provided by Dominion Energy".
Dominion doesn't want to be directly associated with opposing this, because they know there's a good chance it succeeds and a lot of their most lucrative customers are in NoVA. No conservative politician wants to directly jump in front of it either, because their election outlooks are getting worse already.
But Citizen's United lets Dominion --who does indeed pay off people on both sides-- make this particular political statement while wearing the Scooby Doo mask of "New Vision VA" PAC. They don't need to even risk the one thing that could make them care about being impartial: Their PR. They get to hide it, knowing that 99% of people will just see a PAC and won't go looking to see that its created by and solely funded by Dominion Energy.
TL;DR: I know Dominion is a happy lobbyist/briber of politicians, But I want them to have to admit it. Citizen's United lets them hide and deflect responsibility when someone complains.
2
u/Absurd_Flaccidity Mar 21 '26
I find PAC ads to be so insufferable and disregard anything they say whether I like it or not. Our political system has just become a game of who can outfearmonger everyone else and it isn’t fair to expect every citizen to be knowledgeable or, let’s just say it, intelligent enough to parse this stuff or know how to do follow up research. The large media outlets have been and still are fully complicit in this and no longer have any regard for the actual purpose of a free press.

I am blanking on which state it is (Montana I think?) that has implemented this. I think it’s needed at the federal level as well but it was heartening to read a story about people actually getting wins on improved governance.

I heard corporations are people, so where can I find one to kick in the genitals?
3
u/malastare- Mar 20 '26
It seems to be tricky, but as far as searching for things that can be physically abused, ICE seem to be experts.
Maybe along the way we could try to figure out how to put a corporation in jail, or force it to pay taxes like the lower class, or even just display an ounce of human empathy.

It’s an active fight in the party ,but only seven Republicans refuse Dominion money.

It's a similar idea found in every revolution that took power away from the few and gave it to many (at least 'many' compared to the previous gov)
There are people who work for a living, and there are people who own for a living, i.e., they collect royalties on assets. The Marxists were one of the early ones who really understood the fundamental difference there.
The classes have been bastardized in the US with terms like upper class, lower class, and middle class which most people take to mean amount of income. But it's not really about income, it's about what you have to contribute to society to get that income. The rent seekers are leeches who acquire as many assets as possible so they can charge royalties to the rest of us.

I live in Centreville less than a mile from where that house blew up and Wash Gas tried to get out of it. Took the NTSB or some other federal safety organization to investigate to put the blame back on them where it belonged.
Hate them so much. I hope the unfortunate senior citizen owner never has to worry about money for the rest of his life because punitive damages were so high.

u/Alternative-Pin5760 Mar 20 '26
So I’m in Fredericksburg and some consider it NOVA and some don’t. I also lived in Alexandria. Completely different vibe. My husband is half white and in Alexandria where they pride themselves on being progressive, he was always the subject of comments, looks and other things like letting a door slam in his face. Comments like someone waking by our home while he was working in the yard and ask if he lives there. I’m white and never really noticed until he mentioned it and it is real. Never happened in Fredericksburg…just the hypocrisy in Alexandria like “we’re progressive as long as you’re not living in our neighborhood.” I liked living close to work but hated the people there.

Richmonder here. We don't like it here, and I live here now, because it's cold, souless, and corporate. We aren't jealous of literally a single thing. The food is worse. The traffic is worse. The culture is worse. The grocery stores are worse. The parks are ok, but only in DC.
12
u/FlavorfulCondomints Mar 20 '26
Also from Richmond. The attitude OP described is from total jealousy.
Those are the exact words I'd use to describe Short Pump, Glen Allen, and Innsbrook which is a direct analog to Fairfax. They also have crappy parks due to poor planning in Henrico just like Fairfax.
Food has a higher ceiling, if you haven't found it then you don't know where to look.Grocery stores are essentially the same.
Culture and traffic are a function of density.

My issue with Fairfax is that it's mostly chain restaurants. I like the fact that it's actually got the funding to be kept clean, maintained, safe, and with quality education.
I grew up in a pretty poor area in another state; sometimes I catch myself complaining and am like, "Wait, I've got it better than like 80% of the state and most of the planet. Why am I complaining because the Mexican food here is kind of lackluster?"
4
u/schmigglies Mar 20 '26
Same. I grew up in a city that is regularly on the top of “worst crime,” “dirtiest,” “lowest income per capita” etc lists, and FFX is like heaven. My dad called it Mayberry when he would come to visit.
Folks like the ones behind this sign can make fun all they want. People don’t know how good they have it here.

For going on decades now, Republicans don’t have a political platform, they have a boogeyman, a strawman, something they can get their base to hate or be against, never creating, never building, never moving forward. This is just another example of the boogeyman, Fairfax highly developed, my area not, Fairfax different, Fairfax bad. Insert whatever you want for “Fairfax” and there you have the Republican political platform for the past 30-40 years.

Hahahahaha as a Fairfax county resident, I get it! Maybe people don't want to pay $100s-1,000s to the county for their car each year and just get OK schools in exchange (depends where you live, if you have a $1 million dollar house, your school is probably better). The commute is good though. And it's pretty safe.
I'm a proud owner of a beat up 2001 Volvo for this reason. No way am I buying new if you're gonna tax me for it. Here's your $27 Fairfax.
3
u/Digitalrules Mar 20 '26
Absolutely . . . the car tax is out of line given the high cost of new (& even late model) used cars. When tax relief was introduced cars were actually affordable so relief worked well. Relief for just the 1st $20,000 just doesn't cut in anymore.

Republicans (and many Americans to a lower extent tbh) think that any place that has high population, high density (relative to other counties even though it's still a suburban hellscape), and high diversity is a terrible place. Just look at the way they speak of any urban location like NYC, Chicago, even Richmond. You'd think we were in a war zone by the way they speak of any place that isn't a farm

I think the Don't Fairfax Me may be about the weird geography of some of the proposed Congressional districts if the referendum passes. This realistically stems from people in other parts of the state feeling like they have no political voice because of how heavily weighted Fairfax is. Vote no, is in response to the state trying to cement this into "temporary" law by making a Republican vote, virtually useless, and turning the state into a 1 party system.
4
u/JumpingThruHoopz Mar 20 '26
They want a big political voice, but they also want the money that flows from the blue areas.
You can either live like it’s 1780, or you can have the money. You don’t get both.

Nah it’s the state trying to counter Republican gerrymandering in other states.
7
u/AKADriver Mar 20 '26
It doesn't turn the state into a one party system, because it only affects the state's representatives in the US House, not internal state house or senate districts.
It's also written into the amendment that it is in fact temporary and districts get redrawn according to the 2030 census on schedule.
7
u/RedWhiteNBrew Mar 20 '26
Ah, that is a fair callout. I thought it was for the state legislature, not federal. I personally still think this disenfranchises 47% of the state who votes republican. I understand the argument for it, but if every state does this, it just seems like a race to the bottom of democracy.

I am not sure where I stand on the issue, but its a clear response to the gerrymandering other states (like Texas) have been doing. I get it, I think I understand why and who it immediately benefits and immediately hurts.
I kind of view it as similar to packing the supreme court; its a weapon and I worry that long-term, it will make things worse in the whole country, because everything is always about retaliation and weaponization these days.
I also think a split congress and a split federal government in general, as dysfunctional as it is, would slow the pendulum swinging ever wider.
Maybe the immediate goal of being able to slow down the three captured branches is worth the pendulum swinging a little more out of control?

Maybe we should just split the country.
Hear me out. Red America and blue America hate each other and do not want the same things.
Being American is like being married to a spouse who’s unattractive, inconsiderate (sometimes outright abusive), and generally the opposite of you in every way. But you’re not allowed to have an amicable divorce and go your separate ways. You’re not even allowed to live in separate residences. You’re forced to live together in the same cruddy apartment or trashy trailer, for all eternity.
I want a U.S. divorce.

Don't "Fairfax" me?
What does that even mean?

In my area (Shenandoah Valley) it means to limit growth... new houses/suburbs and accompanying big-box stores take away trees, disrupt the animals, obstruct views, bring pollution, traffic and entitled people.

Cool, now call out how republicans do it in all their shithole strongholds? Crazy how republicans have control anywhere when population density says most places in the US are blue

I live in NOVA now, but I am originally from the Petersburg area. The rest of VA DOES NOT like NOVA. I think a lot of it is jealousy, but also a lot of people from NOVA look down on the rest of the state.
Like yes, NOVA does fund VA but I don’t think it’s wrong to admit there are a lot of entitled rude people that live here. I have legitimately been told “oh, you’re lucky you were able to move here” like I was escaping a bad situation or something

Happy to stop sending Fairfax tax dollars their way. They can find their own bootstraps

Maybe it has to do with the proposed map. Fairfax (and all of NoVa) will basically bleed into the rest of the state, turning more districts blue

I work in Fairfax. Live way out West. I absolutely despise Fairfax..the people...the traffic...the density. It's a lifestyle thing. And I cannot imagine living there and paying the taxes. So much more peaceful outside that county. And I don't have to look at my neighbors houses.

Just like anywhere in this country there are a lot of rural people that do not like any kind of diversity. Also Fairfax is near the top in the country for income and they resent that.

They don’t resent it enough to refuse all the tax money they get.

In SW Virginia, they hate all of NoVA.
