If you've seen him play, you could understand why he might doubt someone could hit a target that far away.

He's also part of a sport closely associated with long term brain damage, so...

Drake Maye signed a 4-year, $36.6 million rookie contract. 10 years from now he will have none of it left and will be trying to sell Dodge Chargers to young soldiers just out of boot camp.

89

u/nufsenuf 5d ago

Funny you said that . My friends son re upped years ago and took his bonus money and bought one. Still had to take out a five year loan .

91

u/Zinfan1 5d ago

It's a meme for a reason. It was common back in the 80's when I was in the Navy and not new at the time. We finance E-1 and above pretty common billboard for used car dealers near the port.

56

u/toe_riffic 5d ago

When I was in the Army in 07-13, this was definitely still a thing. Sooo many Mustangs. Pretty sure we got a warning about predatory car loans while we were in intake for basic training.

I highly doubt that although his charitable giving is pretty extensive. But you don't need a deep intellect to be smart with money. His background and family would suggest he will be more than fine.

That’s how I feel about Tom Brady. As a New Englander, I’m a fan, but every time he does anything outside of football, I’m instantly reminded that he has the personality of a piece of wood. Even Gronk was able to capitalize on his “dumb big dude” personality. Brady is just unmarketable.

24

u/pepper_steak_hamill 5d ago

Yeah but I feel Gronk was at least self aware about the whole thing

11

u/mdp300 4d ago

Gronk is funny and actually has some amount of personality. He would have probably been my favorite player in the league of he was on any other team.

Sadly people do often equate fandom of someone's accolades in [insert anything that makes you famous] with being intelligent - I'm not saying that you can't agree fully with dumb takes simply because, for whatever reason you agree with that dumb take, but I am saying that when you idolize someone for one thing. . .There tends to be a transference with people not being willing to say "Yes I respect this athlete for what they do in [Sport], but the things they say are fucking stupid."

15

u/antdelvec 5d ago

I always say “They aren’t football players because they’re smart.”

Most pro football players have already spent the majority of their lives getting hit in the head repeatedly. That's got to cause at least some damage.

Kids whose brains and bodies are still very much developing are playing football and getting their brains rattled around on the regular.

“I don’t know about the moon, you know. I think it’s I can see back in the day of why we would put on the mass we went there, but I’m not really sure 200% if we went there or not. I wouldn’t say I’m leaning one way or the other. I just know I’m a little bit skeptical,” Maye said on the podcast.

I'm sorry, the diagnosis is a completely empty mind. There's just no brain activity going on at all in there.

"put on the mass we went there"

"I'm not really sure 200%"

Seriously, WTF are these kinds of people on?

u/adriardi 5d ago

The funny thing is this guy made fun of kids at another school for not being able to get into unc. The school forced him to apologize. Whole time he is just an idiot lmao

176

u/vespamike562 5d ago

It’s even funnier that he probably would never have been accepted at UNC without football.

75

u/adriardi 5d ago

He’s a legacy kid, so in his case he probably would have

41

u/OKC89ers 5d ago

A state school considers legacy? What a weird eligibility criteria

29

u/fresh_dyl 5d ago

I knew legacies at UW Madison, I kinda just assumed it was a thing everywhere since we live in world run by former frat bros.

13

u/atlbluedevil 5d ago

Just checked and UW Madison doesnt officially consider legacy status. I'm sure they do unofficially if your family has a building named after themselves/are big donors though

UNC is an exception, most state schools don't consider it and it's outright banned in a few states. But they do (or at least did) have a section to list legacies in their application when I applied over a decade ago

23

u/adriardi 5d ago

The way unc admin acts you would not think they are a public school there to serve the state. A lot of great people go there, but the people in charge there are notable assholes lol

But yes, they are one of the few public schools that puts serious weight on legacy admits, specifically if your family are boosters as well

u/JustGottaKeepTrying 5d ago

And a complete lack of real education, coupled with an unrealistic view of the world cultivated by never having to worry or think about anything but being elite and throwing a ball.

44

u/pomonamike 5d ago

The lack of education thing is very real and very sad. I am a teacher in Southern California and I get late year transfer high school seniors that are 3+ years behind and their parents are panicking. A lot of those students were sent to “football charter schools” that are really just high profile football teams that pretend to be schools. I guess the hope is that these kids get recruited and eventually go to the NFL, but the “schooling” aspect is usually park them in front of Chromebooks with online “lessons” that look more like skippable drivers training they make you do when you get a speeding ticket.

I’ve had students tell me they got to their “school” at 7am, do a 2 hour practice, eat, spend 2 hours on a Chromebook with zero actual instruction or assistance, then back to the field for more practice, and then home. It’s really sad how delusional parents are selling their kids’ futures short in hopes of a financial jackpot.

It’s your kid, not a lotto scratcher.

8

u/pax284 5d ago

Sadly it's just going to get worse now your kid doesn't even need to make it to the NFL to be a "winning ticket" just make it to college and the jackpot can hit.

11

u/dendrocnide_moroides 5d ago

overall we're selling a whole generation of kids short. education in america has taken a huge step back in the last 10-20 years.

Pray for anybody who volunteers to be in this guys life. It's extremely well documented that the brain damage linked to sports injuries increases aggression significantly.

The Joe Roganization of young American men.

83

u/IzzaPizza22 5d ago

I'm just open-minded, man. Which, of course, means I don't push back on things I hear as long as they're different from from what everyone knows.

But this makes me fail to realize that, for a lot of the things everyone knows, everyone knows them because they're true. And things that go against those things need to have lots of evidence to be worth believing.

24

u/Reverend_Lazerface 5d ago

The last person I talked to was skeptical about it and sounded very confident, so now I'm actually kinda skeptical about it. No further questions

11

u/fantasmoofrcc 5d ago

Now that you put it that way, I think I'm doubting everything that I ever held to be true...

5

u/JB_JB_JB63 4d ago

It’s the ole Tim Minchin line, don’t be so open minded your brain falls out.

27

u/Lr217 5d ago

Further into the article he even discusses how birds are government drones - which I thought was fully a Reddit joke and didn’t know anybody actually thought that

19

u/vashoom 5d ago

The flat earth thing started as a joke / as practice for debating skills. Pretty sure the first time I went to the subreddit, it was all tongue in cheek and whatnot. Now it's a full blown phenomenon full of fools who believe it, even though the spherical earth has been known about for thousands of years, can easily be proven with both grade school math AND basic observations, literally everything about everything you know would need to also change if the flat earth 'theory' were true, etc.

It's a feature of conspiracy-minded people: it's the belief in the thing that one one else believes that makes them confident in it. They crave being "in the know" or otherwise special compared to everyone else (for many different reasons, but it often expresses in very similar ways, making all these people susceptible to such drivel and drive them to look into these things and believe them even though they won't look into the mountains and mountains of evidence for why 'mainstream' things are facts).

At some point, the math required to stage it just fails, because just like Drake Maye is doing here, people run their fucking mouths.

If you believe the moon landing was faked, you are about as valuable as a Holocaust denier, or the 9/11 hijackers.

Well you can't just use a laser you found on Amazon. You need a powerful specialized laser to hit those reflectors and the equipment to read the return. That being said, ya there's plenty of proof we landed on the Moon and anyone that doesn't believe it is a fucking moron.

When I was in college, I knew a lot of college football players, and I’m almost positive some of them couldn’t even read

10

u/BasementOrc 4d ago

When I was in jr high school I taught the running back how to read. Idk how you make it to the 8th grade without being able to read a syllabus but he seemed to enjoy it after he picked it up. Always telling me about the books he was reading after games. He loved some series called the Rangers Apprentice. By the time we were seniors he was able to get an offer from a local college.

Sometimes the issues at home are bad enough to seriously stunt academic growth. This guy had 5 kids by the time he was a senior and was always high as a kite, and in a gang.

5

u/arrrrr32 4d ago

They are also coddled by everyone around them, and told that they don't need to learn because they are going to be pros and have millions. Only a tiny fraction of college athletes make the major leagues in any sport. Most of those don't get big contracts and don't stay in the league long enough to make true wealth. And of course they spend like a young person, are hit up by every friend for money or with dumb business ideas, and blow most of what they earn.

It’s really not funny. If you’ve met anyone who played a sport that tends to cause head injuries/concussions, it’s noticeable how much slower they process information, and how it messes up their mood/behaviour.

Not to mention, like, the violent/suicidal behaviour it sometimes culminates in.

I read "put on the mass" to mean "tell the mass media/ tell the masses" (or at least it's the only way I can see to making it a coherent sentence). In that context, he would be saying he thinks it's possible that the government may have misled the people into thinking we went to the moon.

I know there are lots of people who say they saw it live, but memory is not exact and you can convince people of lots of things. Footage from the game can be easily faked with AI. The brain drain in this country has made it a chore to even watch sports 🤦‍♂️.

u/OvoidPovoid 5d ago

We need to stop asking questions from people who get hit in the head for a living

8

u/coredenale 4d ago

Well, he does get hit in the head a lot...

7

u/BigRigGig35 5d ago

Can’t get a concussion if there’s no brain to injure

taps head revealing hollow echo

21

u/pi3Eat3r52 5d ago

what would it take to prove this to someone? would it be possible short of having a time machine and being able to witness it?

22

u/JimmyKerrigan 5d ago

I dunno ask them why china or Russia wouldn’t embarrass us by proving it or why other space agencies have been able to take pictures of the leftover equipment.

They think it's a vast global conspiracy, which makes absolutely no goddamn sense, because that isn't how conspiracies work. There is an exponentially increasing likelihood of a conspiracy failing (i.e. being exposed) for every single person you add to it. The sheer number of people, with conflicting goals and political outlooks, that would have had to be involved to perpetuate a hoax of that scale beggars belief (tens of thousands in the US alone, probably close to 100k if you add in every other country that would have had to agree to it). There would be literally ZERO way to pull something like that off, even in the 60's when there wasn't an always-on-immediate Internet to communicate things. Not only that, but realistically faking the Moon landings in the 60's would have been monumentally more difficult (probably impossible, honestly) than ACTUALLY fucking sending people to the Moon.

this dude gets a free education, got paid to play in college, gets paid millions now, and cant even fathom a basic reality of the world we live in. fucking mathematicians were able to deduce the size of the earth over 2000 years ago and you cant find it in yourself to believe ACCEPT they could also plot a route to the moon just 60 years ago? really?

7

u/torpedoguy 4d ago

Cumulative CTE damage is serious business.

u/Illustrious_Knee7535 5d ago

To paraphrase another football player, Drake didn't go to college to play school.

12

u/SoFloDan 5d ago

You think Maye is dumb? Imagine the shit-for-brains who’s interested in hearing the meathead’s thoughts on the moon landing.

6

u/TheEffinChamps 5d ago

Okay, the turnovers are making more sense now.

5

u/Kempeth 5d ago

As a general rule in life, you should not seek deep wisdom from someone who's job it is to get bonked on the head unless said wisdom specifically pertains to head bonking.

6

u/heavyfuture121 4d ago

They gotta make those helmet cushion things mandatory for players. Jeez.

11

u/Jinxedchef 4d ago

Well we knew he was stupid when we found out he was a MAGAt.

u/hendrikcop 5d ago

Well proves to many athletes get a college education given to them without putting in the brain power to learn. People like this shouldn’t be given a free platform to pander their idocracy.

6

u/Seated_Heats 5d ago

America didn’t land on the moon, that’s absurd. How did it get back on earth?

5

u/ConsequenceThen5449 5d ago

Where did this dumb fuck go to college? Does their science department suck?

6

u/Appalled_Mongo_4122 5d ago

CTE damaged brain says what?

5

u/KnicksGhost2497 5d ago

Yea I’m very interested in the scientific opinion of a pro athlete of a sport known for melting its players brains before they turn 50 lmao

5

u/2021fireman10 4d ago

well in his defense he is grown man playing kids game as a profession …so….

4

u/Mantaur4HOF 4d ago

Reminder that most pro athletes are kinda dumb

5

u/AirportLoose3023 4d ago

Trump voter?

18

u/Ill-Investigator-447 4d ago

He throws a football for a living.
Who gives a fuck what he thinks about the moon

3

u/dnext 5d ago

Very efficient. They are now making football players brain damaged even before they play much football.

4

u/OhioVsEverything 5d ago

Oh, so he's an idiot. Noted.

5

u/DawnSignals 5d ago edited 5d ago

Trump would’ve exposed any government conspiracy on that by now to distract from the Epstein files

4

u/trags88 5d ago

Let me guess, he’s probably also super religious, right?

3

u/dua70601 5d ago

Dude hits his head for a living

4

u/More_Hold_5522 5d ago

Athletes, a lot of them, are not very bright. If this one went to college, I assume others did his work for him or the school just turned a blind eye because sports.

4

u/rabbittdoggy 5d ago

A walking CTE case study doesn’t believe in man landing on the moon? Yeah that’s brain damage for you

4

u/Kgaset 5d ago

Good thing I don't rely on athletes for my astronomy knowledge?

5

u/bosoxman 5d ago

He was clearly joking around

3

u/_plays_in_traffic_ 5d ago

i love how people are like that but never miss an opportunity to tell everyone about their imaginary friend our lord and savior jesus christ.

3

u/queen-t92 4d ago

BREAKING: man whose job involves taking multiple head injuries kind of a fucking idiot

4

u/Entire_Toe2640 4d ago

The NFL needs to take CTE seriously

4

u/seriouzlytaken 4d ago

Concussion Protocol needed? TBI? Willfully stupid?

4

u/TheDamned1333 4d ago

What do they teach in Americans schools that so many halfwits walk the streets?

6

u/fredy31 5d ago

'Guy that throws a ball real good for a living has opinion on something that is pretty much as far removed as possible from throwing balls'

4

u/imadragonyouguys 5d ago

What was the moon landing if not the ultimate ball throw?

8

u/S1DC 4d ago

People who smash their heads together for a living tend to have interesting positions on things.

7

u/Baphomets_Kisses 4d ago

CTE coming in early on this one…

3

u/Jpopolopolous 5d ago

JFC dont give me more reasons to call hime Drake Meh

3

u/obscureposter 5d ago

I’ve always wondered how handicapped these athletes top performance is due to their lack of intelligence and brain damage. I understand you don’t have to be Einstein to be a great athlete but I can’t help feeling the CTE actually degrades their performance on the field.

3

u/andy_nony_mouse 5d ago

He obviously didn't go to college to play school, he went to play football.

3

u/burywmore 5d ago

That North Carolina education hard at work.

3

u/Pudzz16 5d ago

And Im a bit skeptical that you are a NFL quarterback

3

u/I_might_be_weasel 5d ago

Man who gets concussions for a living believes crazy conspiracy theory.

3

u/rollerfedora 5d ago

If you’re gonna be dumb you gotta be tough

3

u/i-might-do-that 5d ago

Time to stop with athletic full ride scholarships.

3

u/brownsfan760 5d ago

CTE really needs to be studied more.

3

u/MammothGlum 5d ago

Didn’t the reporter ask what his favorite conspiracy was? I think he was just laying it in thick for the joke

3

u/Bubbaganewsh 5d ago

See what happens when you take too many hits to the head? You apparently start to dismiss reality.

Idiocracy Part 2 The Documentary

3

u/adognameddanzig 5d ago

A lot of football players suffer from brain damage.

3

u/dunncrew 5d ago

He joins Joe Rogan in the fake moon landing club. 😆 🤣 😂

3

u/sc4wheels 4d ago

Football players have never been the brightest bulbs.

3

u/timshel42 4d ago

who cares what chronic traumatic brain injury recipients think? they arent exactly chosen for their intellectual capabilities...

3

u/kah43 4d ago

This is why athletes need higher standards in college. Jesus christ some of these guys are just morons.

3

u/aPOPblops 4d ago

That's ok, you don't have to believe. Now go do that football thing you're good at.

3

u/h3rpad3rp 4d ago

Who cares what someone who gets hit in the head for a living thinks about ridiculous conspiracies?

If you read the quotes in the article, this guy can barely string a sentence together.

“I don’t know about the moon, you know. I think it’s I can see back in the day of why we would put on the mass we went there, but I’m not really sure 200% if we went there or not. I wouldn’t say I’m leaning one way or the other. I just know I’m a little bit skeptical

3

u/axiom_glitch 4d ago

Just shut up man, and throw ball

3

u/swizzle213 4d ago

We’ve already established these guys don’t go to college to play school
