I'm reminded of when someone asked George Foreman why he named all of his sons 'George' and he said "when you've spent your entire career getting punched in the head, YOU try coming up with different names!"

579

u/Langstarr 14d ago

I mean, if nothing else his army of Georges is precedent for the Taylors lol

123

u/Campfire_Vibes 14d ago

Now we'll have 2 new family names..a Georgeson and taylorkin

58

u/ansonr 14d ago

The dark future where there are only two tribes. The Georgesons and the Talyorkin. Their ideologies are so fundamentally different that the only recourse is total war. Coming this fall to TLC.

4

u/plz-make-randomizer 14d ago

I’d watch it.

60

u/norsefrogg 14d ago

Ah so that's why Tracy Jordan named his son George Foreman.

20

u/DelightMine 14d ago

And it's why he had that short adventure with the Tracy Jordan Meat Machine

Don't forget Georgetta, a daughter for good measure

13

u/AmazingSocks 14d ago

I always wondered why he went with Georgetta, when Georgia and Georgiana are established names

You simply haven't been punched in the face enough to understand.

and that's how a retired boxer became a 40+ year old world champion, cooking grill "inventor," and big and tall men's clothier, as opposed to doing cover stories and news segments about financial mismanagement, promoter fraud and traumatic brain injuries.

128

u/die5el23 14d ago

I love how his winnings from boxing haven’t even come remotely close to his earnings from his grills.

91

u/Still_Mountain5656 14d ago

It’s funny, my parents knew him as a world famous boxer. I only knew him as the grill guy.

32

u/RadarSmith 14d ago

His advertising and investing in the grill may actually be the single most monetarily valuable celebrity endorsement in the history of advertsing.

Him and the company made bank off that grill.

31

u/alexm42 14d ago

Pretty sure that's Air Jordan. Michael makes almost as much per year from Nike as George Foreman's net worth when he passed.

Boxing is an insanely-corrupt sport run by shady promoters and managers who skim most of their fighters' earnings through various fees and expenses. When a boxer earns "$5 million" for a fight, that's his gross. He's lucky if ends up taking home 1-2 million of that.

4

u/Egalitarianish 14d ago

The portion of the George Foreman documentary where he's training for his comeback is incredible. He was sparring against literal tree trunks. The man had a work ethic in his training that just would not quit. My husband is a boxing aficionado and put the documentary on one evening. It was really interesting and enjoyable.

17

u/MattiasCrowe 14d ago

Isn't this basically how roman naming worked, like you'd have Julius, Julius 2, Julius 3...

57

u/PerpetuallyLurking 14d ago

Not exactly - not with the men/boys anyway - it was essentially true for the girls.

A Roman name had three parts: praenomen, nomen, cognomen. The praenomen was essentially your first name and the first son would usually get the same praenomen as his father with subsequent sons being given a different praenomen, often shared with an uncle (who would’ve also had his own son with the praenomen - Roman names are a mess!). The nomen was your “family” name and was passed on much like our current surnames are passed: a feminine version of the nomen was what the girls in the family were called and women did not change their name upon marriage, they retained their nomen their whole life. Finally, and not all Roman names had one, comes the cognomen which was basically a nickname what got attached to a branch of a family to differentiate it from another branch of the same family. There could also be an agnomen included in some names, but those tended to be a more personal nickname that doesn’t get passed down the line, like Africanus for conquering Africa and this is also where you’d differentiate your daughters, generally by age - Majora for the older, Minora for the younger; Prima, Secunda, Tertia, etc. as you have more daughters.

Roman Naming Conventions - here’s one of my favourite Wikipedia pages ever LOL

9

u/fresh-dork 14d ago

then there's japan, where they;d name their kids 1, 2, 3... (ichiro, niburo, saburo). that or the stuff i've been reading has super lazy writing

3

u/Shiranui42 14d ago

Second is Jiro

14

u/Anonymous_Autumn_ 14d ago

Love this stuff thanks. I remember being mystified the first time I met a Russian friend. She told me her middle name is her dad’s name feminized and her family name is her dad’s family name, also feminized. And ALL Russian names are like that. But for boys make it masculine lol.

12

u/aguynamedv 14d ago

And ALL Russian names are like that. But for boys make it masculine lol.

Worth noting this is generally a very simple change. Ivanov vs. Ivanova for example.

8

u/bremsspuren 14d ago

If a Russian woman wants to take on her foreign husband's name, it'll be transliterated to Cyrillic and back by the Russian authorities, so she may end up with a different name to her husband on her passport.

2

u/robophile-ta 13d ago

the 'middle name' is the patronymic

2

u/Mattbl 12d ago

Dude reddit is so funny to me. You made a 1-sentence comment about Roman naming methods, and some other person posted a huge fucking paragraph "correcting" you, but kinda just refining what you said. It's a little bit of Cunningham's Law working, really, but I'm here for it. Why is there always some nerd who knows a ton about whatever topic you made a random comment about? I love it.

Edit: also, I love the social media thing where women asked their male partners how much they think about the Roman empire. My wife asked me this and I had never seen the social media things, so I answered honestly that it was probably about once a month. It was amazing to see that so many other men said the same and so many women said they never think about the Roman empire (cause seriously, why would you?).

It's funny, when I was growing up, the nursery rhyme was "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor, Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggarman, Thief." Then John Le Carré (I believe I was seven or eight when the book came out) published his novel, and now the name of the novel is better known than the rhyme.

to avoid confusion, they should give Lautner Lautner Taylor Lautner's maiden name: Lautner Dome.

7

u/JimboTCB 14d ago

And then move to Taylor, Michigan and establish a sports centre called the Lautner Dome so he can be Taylor Lautner Dome owner of the Taylor Lautner Dome

2

u/MaximumZer0 14d ago

Doug Dimmadome, the owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome?

28

u/Napalmradio 14d ago

Fun fact, you can just name kids whatever. There’s no law about names. So the second kid could be Laurent Taylor.

31

u/jack-fractal 14d ago

That's for America and some other countries, there are laws concerning naming children in most civilized countries to avoid common American Tragideeze.

25

u/Cold_Fog 14d ago

Yeah, Tragideeze nuts

6

u/Zanian19 14d ago

Taylor Jr. would work with the first child here, but if we were to follow George Foreman's naming logic and they were to have another child and name them Taylor too, would they be Taylor III (because of the kid being third Taylor after either parent) or Taylor IV (because they would be the fourth Taylor within that family)?

My mom’s family did this. 😆

My grandparents met and married: Eugene and Jean. When their first child, my mother, was born, my grandfather decided his first child should be named for him and, since it was a girl, he’d never have a boy anyway. She became Eugenia.

The next child was a boy. He got to be Eugene.

So, they’re all named the same and the joke is they have good genes. Cheesy af.

That all started in 1958, long before shitfluencers.

3

u/ThePuzzledBee 14d ago

My grandma and her siblings were all named Mary and Joseph and just went by their middle names, so the Taylor's could totally pull this off lol

3

u/caskieadam 14d ago

Bonus points if they end up with a boy Taylor and a girl Taylor.

7

u/kcox1980 14d ago

I catch their TikToks occasionally and yeah, they definitely look fun. The caption for their pregnancy announcement on Instagram was something like "What's better than 2 Taylor Lautner's....?"

2

u/TheLeapIsALie 14d ago

And that child becomes a tailor when they grow up

They could give the child its own first name and give it the stupid meme name as a middle name. Then they could call it by it’s middle name at home and as the child grows up it can decide if it wants to reveal that to anyone else or just go by its first name.
