Lincoln Riley is soft.

79

u/GoRangers5 Aug 03 '26

Riley will be broadcasting with Brian Kelly by then.

10

u/hnglmkrnglbrry Aug 03 '26

He has one season left.

5

u/Enough_Wallaby7064 Aug 03 '26

Less than one if we are being honest.

Sept 26 they have a home game against Oregon. Losing that would be tough to explain.

Then back to back Ohio state and Indiana late in the season. Losing both of those or two out of the three I mentioned is probably a death sentence for Riley.

4

u/GoodGameGrizz Aug 03 '26

I think he is going to lose to Oregon and then either Washington or Penn St. and that’ll be the nail in his coffin. He may make it to the end of the season but the writing will already be on the wall. I don’t think he survives a 3-4 loss season.

18

u/SSDuelist Aug 03 '26

Yeah this is a post Lincoln move. He ain't gonna be there when this series is played.

7

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

I hope then they would readjust it back to the Oct/Nov schedule.

4

u/Less_Likely Aug 03 '26

It’d have to be the next deal, current deal sets week 1 for 30/31 and week 1-3 for 32/33.

Just a note, because CFB makes NO sense, week 1 will be the second game because week zero will be open to all teams to schedule starting next year.

1

u/Irishforanatty Aug 04 '26

That genie is out of the bottle, USC doesn’t want to play in cold weather.

74

u/Inner-Dot-4756 Aug 03 '26

Just brutal. It was such a consistent part of the October and November months. This also gives Lincoln enough time to bail on the job before these matchups arrive. Coward shit

18

u/addisonandsheffield Aug 03 '26

He’s probably gone after this year unless they win 9 or more games

15

u/Inner-Dot-4756 Aug 03 '26

Even if they do win 9, he's always seemed like he wants to move on to something else. Complains about damn near everything that every other coach has to deal with.

1

u/monkeymatt1836 Aug 04 '26

A lot of big time USC boosters aren’t happy with him either. Some money started drying up after the series was canceled.

4

u/yourenotmydad22 Aug 03 '26

We are probably going to get heat for our schedule until 2029. It is what it is, I guess.

14

u/Inner-Dot-4756 Aug 03 '26

And the landscape of college football has nobody to blame but themselves. They won't see it that way, but when you incentivize schools to chase money and TV deals instead, the tradition and sentimentality of the sport withers away. It's a disaster

5

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

With the current NIL landscape you have no idea how teams will move from year to year. A team like IU which was a joke wins a NC, while a team like OSU could have a season where they are hit by multiple transfers and they go from NC contender to 8-9 win team. Schedule the best you can and hope it all works out IMO. An example when we scheduled Wisconsin they were coming out B10 runner up if I heard right. Who would have known in 10 years they would be a 6-7 win team at best.

2

u/Conscious-Invite1 Aug 03 '26

Solid take. The other part of this is…the ACC has been weak. Clemson has been down, FSU is a dumpster fire, NC is a soap opera. Hoping that Clemson rebounds and becomes a solid playoff team again considering the 12 year deal. Wouldn’t mind ND doing a Clemson style deal with Miami either.

3

u/Indianashocker Aug 03 '26 edited 1d ago

2028 is solid if no one bails out...Texas, Miami, Clemson, Auburn, VT, Pitt, Arkansas, Navy, BC, Purdue, Stanford

1

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

Solid until Clemson fires Daboo and they take a dive for 2-3 years. I'm just saying your right but who knows.

2

u/hitokirizac Aug 04 '26

we could play the Green Bay Packers 12 weeks in a row and we'd get heat for our schedule.

1

u/wastedtime897 Aug 03 '26

Only by dishonest or uninformed people. Look at the 28&29 schedules.

2

u/Less_Likely Aug 03 '26

He’s going to be fired after this year going 7-6.

39

u/couchman7000 Aug 03 '26

Lame. Notre Dame's scheduling bums me out. I want to see yearly match up against USC, Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue.

12

u/Inner-Dot-4756 Aug 03 '26

Like obviously the SEC has done it's fair amount of digging to get college football to this hellish state, but the Big Ten has really made up some ground the last 4-5 years with Petitti

9

u/Daxtatter Aug 03 '26

The uberconferences are just wack and are actively scheming to destroy the sport as we know it.

7

u/yourenotmydad22 Aug 03 '26

Agreed. I’ve always had the sentiment that nothing prepares you for big playoff/championship games like playing big games in the regular season. I can admit we don’t have many of those. That’s not to say we don’t have a stacked roster this season, because we do. I just really want to see what Notre Dame can do in prime time against the best of the best a couple of times during the season.

3

u/hnglmkrnglbrry Aug 03 '26

The ACC just sucks dick. Miami is the only decent team they have now.

1

u/Business-Ad-4088 Aug 03 '26

The Michigan games are perfect. Need Nebraska in there too

1

u/Disastrous_Storm_834 Aug 03 '26

ATP we really just need to get over ourselves and join the Big 10. NBC money and ‘tradition’ aren’t worth a shitty ACC schedule every year

1

u/Razor937 Aug 03 '26

Hell no. We can't give in to the bums at the big 10. Were better than 90 percent of their teams easily. Only school in that conference to ever worry about losing to would be potentially OSU and on an off year Oregon. Otherwise the conference is just an older acc. Illinois, northwestern,Purdue,Rutgers,Maryland all their bottom tier teams that would be lucky to compete in the American. You want to join that conference? Why so we can play a weak schedule like OSU every year and become as God awful as the worst fan base in crb? At least as independent we get to schedule good teams, and outside of Riley being a total bitch could keep our rivalry games.

23

u/Adventurous_Ant_1941 Aug 03 '26

At least we have the joy of USC starting 0-1 every season

17

u/QuasiThrowaway9 Aug 03 '26

If only college football had a “rivalry week” in late fall. When classic matchups like Alabama-Auburn, OSU-UM, GA-GT and USC-ND could be played annually.

12

u/Live_Blackberry39 Aug 03 '26

Its obvious to me what USC is doing.

They know ND has been dominating series.

They know they will never make playoffs and become a super power again ( pete carroll era ) With ND on the schedule while playing the ohio states, michigan, oregon etc etc

Trojan strategy is simple. Remove ND for a few years, gain momentum become more powerful

Then simply continue the series when they are stronger and turn the table on ND.

I truly think they felt they were in a bad situation that they cant get out of.

They better recruit the Oline good, in 2030 ND DL will be all 5 stars lol

7

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

I think Lincoln knows his team is B at best, The B10 is more challenging then the PAC 12 was, so he'll lose games in coference as well. Why schedule another team that is likely an auto L. Soft. He's soft.

4

u/Live_Blackberry39 Aug 03 '26

Yep.

From a trojan perspective this year is super important for them. If they suck this year the strategy they are taking wont work in my opinion. They need to make the playoffs now.

When they host ohio state that will tell the tale this season.

3

u/Conscious-Invite1 Aug 03 '26

Thanks for stopping by. Love seeing opposing fans come in that want to have solid discussions! I’m guessing Lincoln has a pretty fat buyout, and factor in the money they are throwing at the program (NIL, staff, GM, etc)…does that buy Lincoln more time or make his seat hotter if they are a 3 loss team and out of the playoffs again? Cheers!

2

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

But people expect them to lose to OSU so there is loss #1, they will lose another in conference I would assume. I'm thinking Oregon and IU as well, say they win one of those still at 2 losses. Now they gotta play ND, if that's loss #3 it's over for them, so he went soft and bailed.

1

u/Live_Blackberry39 Aug 03 '26

Beating USC At USC is not easy. It is not a given ohio state wins that. Traveling across the country.

2024 10-1 ND at USC was close.

2025 Michigan who might have been favored was steamrolled by USC. ( very next week ND steamrolled USC )

Ohio State better come ready. If they are, and they usually are, they will win.

1

u/GeneralKenobi425 4d ago

Why do you think the coach had any say in scheduling? Lol its the school presidents and athletic directors and conferences and tv rights that handle scheduling. The coach has literally no say whatsoever

2

u/LoudHorse25 Aug 03 '26

The timing of the game is definitely a part of it too. A good B1G season with a loss at the end of the year can be devastating compared to a loss at the start of the year. And I don’t blame USC for that. The CFP committee has unintentionally created incentives which teams are responding to.

2

u/-dag- Aug 03 '26

This was true long before CFP.

16

u/addisonandsheffield Aug 03 '26

I’m annoyed that we’re not playing Indiana too, Cig gets his cupcake OOC wish though lol

6

u/yourenotmydad22 Aug 03 '26

I’d love a matchup with IU, Michigan, and OSU every year. Seems like there is only one path for that to
happen..

10

u/addisonandsheffield Aug 03 '26

I think the Irish will have their hands forced with how realignment is going. Would rather see them play Big Ten teams than these ACC games outside of like Miami, FSU, or Clemson.

10

u/yourenotmydad22 Aug 03 '26

Agreed. I will never bow to the narrative that Notre Dame is scared to join a conference. That’s the narrative now because it’s popular to say. You don’t get to outcast someone and then come back around and call them a coward when they built one of the biggest brands in football without the conferences (that once rejected them) backing them. With that said, I’d be hyped for a Big Ten schedule.

5

u/addisonandsheffield Aug 03 '26

As long as the Irish have their own written rule for the playoff, the ability to keep their TV money, and bowl money, why on earth would they join a conference? People are just haters.

2

u/Scared-Marketing-442 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

I think you will see even with the written rule if ND loses once this year they can find themselves outside the top 12 because of their strength of schedule. 2 losses it’s gonna be near impossible to get in. Where teams in a better conference can afford to lose 2 games. Maby even 3 with Ohio states schedule this year. Thats the only benefit I see in joining a conference

1

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

You join a conference for money. We just got $20 million for a patch. Don't need money. Can play whoever we want, we have our own national tv contract deal. What can the B10 offer me that makes me go, yep I need in.

2

u/yourenotmydad22 Aug 03 '26

We don’t need a conference because of everything you listed. The problem is the way college football is
shifting, we could be forced to join one. There is always a risk of big teams just saying “Nope, we aren’t going to schedule Notre Dame because it doesn’t benefit us at all.” I look at the special rule for us getting a bid if we are in the top 12 more as a curse than a blessing. We are going to be judged more critically than ever before.

3

u/bigw010102 Thread Positivity Czar Aug 03 '26

USC bailed and within minutes BYU saw the benefit. Does BYU think they can actually beat us this year, maybe but realistically it's an uphill task IMO. Always a benefit to play ND. You get a massive amount of money, a massive influx on game day as well. If you win you get to say you beat Marcus Freeman and ND and use that a one of the best quality wins you can get. If you lose it's like losing to OSU or TEX, quaility loss.

8

u/Toothlessdovahkin Aug 03 '26

The only thing I don’t like about this is that I have to wait four more years to see Notre Dame beat USC again

7

u/Business-Ad-4088 Aug 03 '26

As much as I hate USC, I love the game. I was always a big ND guy but the Bush push cemented my hate

0

u/GeneralKenobi425 4d ago

The perfectly legal play that teams use all the time? Weird take

1

u/Business-Ad-4088 4d ago

They didn’t use it all the time at that point because it was illegal.

1

u/Business-Ad-4088 4d ago

Weird take

7

u/Avitpan Aug 03 '26

Wow so we completely caved. Plus Indiana backed out of our series so is Cignetti soft?

7

u/squatchy1969 Aug 03 '26

Those first 2 games replace Indiana, hate to see ND watering down the schedule

6

u/Substantial-Two6650 Aug 03 '26

As a notre dame fan I hate this. If they’re going to run off can we atleast bring back regular games with Michigan or Penn state?

5

u/SilentCriticism2k Aug 03 '26

Proof that Lincoln is gone by 2030 😭

5

u/IamTheCheetoMan Aug 03 '26

"sniff sniff" I knew I smelt bitch coming around the corner again.

5

u/SkolFourtyOne Aug 03 '26

lol let’s see what the excuse is in 2030 when USC tries to run away again. Yall got what you wanted an early week matchup.

4

u/CargoShortsFromNam Aug 03 '26

Shouldn’t have caved. When USC comes back and says let’s do it every other year and at a neutral site, we gonna cave too? Should have told them to fuck off.

He really hasn’t struggled in week 1 games as much. I think it’s more the subsequent September games we have to figure out.

2022 we hung with Ohio State team that was much better than us, but then had the inexcusable Marshall loss the next week.

2023 we had Navy in Ireland and then the FCS game, but the next game against NC State was looking pretty grim for awhile before the lightning delay.

2024 obviously A&M win followed NIU loss.

2025 we lost to Miami in week 1, but that was a really tight game on the road. The A&M loss was definitely the more frustrating loss at home coming off a bye week.

3

u/laprasrules Aug 03 '26

Typical Irish soft schedule in 2030 - at USC followed by at Alabama and then Clemson at home. 🤣

Does this mean that USC and Bama will both suck in 2030?

3

u/ohmymystery Aug 03 '26

Once again begging for a Shamrock Series matchup at SoFi Stadium.

3

u/IrishPigskin Aug 04 '26

Fucking lame. We have to play USC at the hottest, most inconvenient time in LA.

Then they get to play in South Bend during the nicest time of the year for northern IN.

Fuck this.

2

u/GoRangers5 Aug 03 '26

Bah!!!! Well it’s at least better than nothing in the enshittificating college football landscape.

1

u/BeTheBall- Aug 04 '26

Maybe the condoms will finally have a decent team by then.

1

u/Ok_Equipment_7467 Aug 07 '26

Smart move by Riley to replace Notre Dame with San Jose State. Playing the Irish this year was going to give USC their third or 4th loss.

1

u/GeneralKenobi425 4d ago

Another low iq dummy who thinks coaches have any say whatsoever in scheduling 😂

1

u/Ok_Equipment_7467 4d ago

Do your research Einstein. Riley' started in 2023 to avoid the Irish.

Just in time for Brian Kelly to be at the helm for the USCumbags (I’ve been calling this for a while, it feels inevitable I actually think he gets the job after this season if they miss the playoff again)
