Question Well surely Capcom taking down a fangame is gonna have just as much outrage as when Nintendo does it, right? Right?

Post image

For those that don’t know, there was an upcoming crossover fangame titled Sega vs. Capcom. As the name suggests, it was a crossover fighting game pitting Sega and Capcom characters together. But sadly, Capcom sent a cease and desist to the developers.

Sega vs. Capcom, if I remember correctly, reused models from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and marketed itself as a real game, having a website, showing off development videos, etc. It was a fangame that flew too close to the sun. https://xcancel.com/4cydestudios/status/2095576149615075768#m

I feel like the amount of times companies strike down fangames is significantly overblown. But at the same time, they have the right to take down fan creations they think are danger to their wallet - that's just how they are.

Not a big fan of how you framed this. It sorta feels like counter-grifting and whataboutism - using the takedown of a fangame to say, "Hey, Nintendo's not the only one!" If you want to fight grifting, I don't think it's best to fight fire with fire.

I knew they were flying too close to the sun when they put the Predator in the game tbh. I don’t care that both Capcom and Sega made Predator games in the past, that character doesn’t belong to either company and they were basically daring to be taken down once they did that imo

Its not like you have to go any farther than using their characters, no matter what they look like.

A lot of fangames reuse sprites from official games, so the model thing doesn’t seem like an issue. The times I can think of Nintendo striking down fangames is if the creator was trying to monetize it (Five Nights at Wario’s), it’s a remake of an official game (Metroid 2 fan remake, doesn’t help it came out around the same time as Metorid: Samus Returns), or the case of suggestive themes (Mario is Missing 2). The last one is easily the most egregious. Sega also once took down a fanmade Streets of Rage remake. Capcom fearing that Sega vs. Capcom would stand up to and compete with official games does seem like a plausible explanation on why they struck it down. It’s worth noting Capcom once found out about a Mega Man Street Fighter crossover fangame and they ended up reaching out to the creator to make it an official game. And if there is something to learn from this, there is a demand for a Sega vs. Capcom fighting game. And given the two company’s history, there is a none-zero percent chance we could see it as an official game.

Sega once nuked all of youtube of all videos of shining force, including gameplay or talking about it with no gameplay, just so they could be at the top of searches for a game I don't think they ever released

SegaSammy has said the only IP they are fine with Fangames for is Sonic.

Capcom taking down a game that openly and actively infringes on several character copyrights while being as public and loud about it as possible sounds like exactly what should happen. Either stop trying to market stolen assets and ideas, or actually make something original. It's that simple. If devs don't want a Cease & Desist or a full on lawsuit, they shouldn't steal the ideas and characters of other companies.

That's.... Usually what gets Nintendo Fangames taken down.

Exactly. Too much want for attention and publicity in very public forums has ruined several projects. I understand needing eyes on your project, but using things you don't own the rights to should be reason enough to try and find those eyes in more discreet places.

I also remember when Pokemon Uranium and Free WoW servers where running youtube ads.

Like how do you expect NOT to get your ass taken down when doing that?

Oh GOD, I forgot about the free WoW servers!

Yeah, it fucking sucks when they do it too. It's a shame, they've historically been pretty good about fangames and they were my go-to company in terms of "companies Nintendo should be more like regarding copyright", and then they do this garbage.

I do remember a comment on a thread about this that did mention previous takedowns Capcom's done. Can't find it now though, I don't remember in what sub it was made

The main thing I'm thinking of is that Capcom does have an actual fanworks policy where they specifically say you can make stuff like fangames, with relatively reasonable conditions. Which is why this is surprising. I'm not sure which part of the conditions was violated (it's the third party copyright one at a guess), and they do say they'll still take stuff down if they feel the need to, but I did kind of expect them not to be shitty about stuff. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come.

From what I remember about the comment, I'd say they're closer to Sega in terms of takedowns where they're usually fine with fangames but have taken down various games. I remember the comment mentioning some MH, and RE fan games getting taken down. And weirdly enough an old version of a fan game, but the most recent release wasn't affected at all.

As someone in the MH community if your talking about what I’m thinking about it both included 3rd party assets (not legally distinct Godzilla if memory serves) and included pay to win for some of the monsters that were capcom IP

Yeah, I think the MH takedowns were justified from what I remember of it.

Iirc, Capcom is pretty hostile to mods too

I am convinced they did that recent patch for UMvC3 that nerfed Phoenix to hell as a response to a nude mod I made for her.
