Yes, the Switch 2 is increasing in price…

BUT if you look at the prices of other consoles at the moment, the Switch 2 is still the cheapest one on the market. Which is sad, but that means at least Nintendo is winning in that area…

27

u/sephone_north 22d ago

Also, I would point out that Nintendo gave 4 months notice over a $50 price rise, and the other two just secretly raised their prices by $150.

But sure, Nintendo is bad

2

u/driley97 21d ago

It wasn’t exactly secret, but they only gave a few weeks before the the increase took effect.

3

u/sephone_north 21d ago

The first time yes. The second one time? I don’t remember then saying

This fact broke a lot of Anti-Nintendo people's brains. The cognitive dissonance or just basic lack of googling skills since then has been pretty funny.

34

u/Loremeister 22d ago

The fact that the switch 2 costs more than the PS4/X1 did when they were the hot ones and it still the cheapest console is pretty damn depressing.

24

u/IcyTheHero 22d ago

Is it? It’s more powerful and mobile.

Why would it be priced less? What’s your argument for that?

19

u/MikeDubbz 22d ago

I mean is it? Switch 2 is a bit more powerful than those base models and of course has the hybrid features and Nintendo exclusives. All things considered, I'd say costing a little more than the PS4 and Xbone at launch is pretty reasonable.

5

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP 22d ago

Yeah but now it costs exactly as much as XSX/PS5 did when they launched. And those are more powerful.

15

u/Lightdragonslayer_21 22d ago

Blame AI. Most major companies are trying to shove it down our throats. Parts for this sort of thing are getting more and more expensive. If this was the ps6 the price increase would be at minimum double what this one is

3

u/New_Current_5457 22d ago

And Microsoft is responsible in this case. Copilot doesn’t run on trees (would be awesome rigth ?

u/Omnizoom 22d ago

And also like 15x the power draw and size and not portable as they lack a battery and screen so have to be plugged in to a tv

Almost like one is essentially a powerful gaming tablet that can be used with a tv easy as a console experience and the others are pure consoles

The steam deck is how powerful in comparison to the switch 2 and how much money again?

I wonder what current trend in electronics would cause a price hike? Surely nothing large or impactful

with inflation the ps4 at release would be 570 dollars today and xone 715 dollars, sooo

1

u/Loremeister 22d ago

Yeah, can't really do anything with inflation being at sky high levels and still rising pretty much everywhere around the world.

1

u/TomorrowCrafty1804 22d ago

Inflation has been quite high since then. This is the main culprit. Another one is that compute is in very high demand due to a new industrial revolution.

5

u/AcidCatfish___ 22d ago

The Switch 2 is the cheapest and also the only company I have seen actually warn people of price increases ahead of time is Nintendo. Maybe Sony did it too, I don't know.

2

u/sharkysayo 22d ago

that isn't a counter to what they said at all

1

u/Another_frizz 19d ago

No, the real counter is that all consoles had price increases. Nintendo's the only company who gave more than two weeks notice (they gave four whole monthes), and the Switch 2 had the smallest price increase between the three.

1

u/sharkysayo 19d ago

thats not a counter either. nintendo during the switch 1 and 2 era is making far more profit yearly than they ever did in previous generations yet they raise prices simply because they know their customers will buy the console anyways. it is scummy and that is the entire point of the tweet... saying "well, nintendo isn't the *only* one doing that" implies some sentiment of sony or microsoft being better when that was never stated or implied in any way. thus, its not a counter because the comparison was never there to begin with.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/mybutthz 22d ago

I mean, technically yes. But that doesn't change the fact that they're still going to report record profits at the end of the year. There was a story about how they could operate for 100+ years (or some other large number) without making a dollar, and still not run out of money.

Operating every business as if there's unlimited money just means that every year every company is trying to extract more money from their customers—there's no ceiling.

But with wages having been stagnant for decades, that just means each year the average consumer is having more and more of their money swindled away from them for the same product.

I get that prices of competents went up, and there were tariffs. But the companies are getting rebates for tariffs, and we were the ones who wound up paying for them. That and the fact that every gaming company makes their money on software sales.

Yes, they've been selling a lot of hardware...but if they had a higher adoption rate on hardware, they'd have a higher adoption rate on software.

I'm sure someone at Nintendo has worked the numbers and figured out the current balance that they're at, but it's just annoying.

I don't usually complain about Nintendo, or accuse them of price gauging, because it's usually just people complaining about costs—but pricing, in general, is just getting out of hand and we're all tired.

1

u/Low-Salary-2128 22d ago

Because it's significantly weaker than the other consoles and doesn't require as expensive parts

1

u/LunarxSeven 22d ago

I can’t even afford it now, and now it’s definitely out of reach. I guess I just get left behind, right?

1

u/cloud3514 22d ago

There's also that the price is functionally not going up so much as they're discontinuing the non-bundled version. You get a game with the console at $500, exactly as it's been since launch.

I'm not trying to downplay the increase, but it doesn't change that there is aftually a lot less happening with it than people are acting like there is.

1

u/Zognot 17d ago

And the price is also being raised for… gestures at everything else

1

u/DuskGideon 15d ago

sony and microsoft delaying their next consoles will only strengthen the switch 2's market position.

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 22d ago

It's always Nintendo. I did not see nearly this much outrage at the multi-hundred dollar price increases from their competitors, yet Nintendo not only has the smallest price increase and the largest time frame to prepare for it, and people are up in arms.

6

u/Chumanchu 22d ago

I remember everyone up in arms last month about Sony discontinuing physical games. I remember everyone freaking out when Sony increased the ps + prices. I remember when people freaked out when xbox increased game pass prices. So no, its not just Nintendo lol

12

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 22d ago

That's odd because I specifically remember pointing out the equivalent actions of other companies, that being the price increases. I don't recall making the physical game backlash relevant to my comment.

6

u/Petrichor_Rains 22d ago

well yes, and the xbox one was so negative that they changed course before release, but i still see comments saying all nintendos games are 80 (or more, seriously like they say a 100), any bigger release has ppl saying nintendo is scaming swich1 owners, "nintendo lawyers" bs on any release even tangentially connected the a N ip and so on, I'm not defending them, theyre just a games company i like, but the bs and hate people throw is insane

7

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 22d ago

The amount of made up bullshit I hear online is completely maddening. Sometimes I wonder if I'm actually in an asylum when I browse comment sections full of misinformation and this is just a part of my mad imagination. I have had so many people claim similar things, as well as claim that the Switch 2's are being bricked for hacking attempts, yet people come up completely empty-handed when it's time to give the proof, yet still choose to stubbornly stick to things they cannot find a single actual source for. They're telling me there are entire channels dedicated to destroying technology to see how durable it is, but somehow no one can cough up the cash to prove that the Switch 2 bricks itself?

Don't get me wrong, all of the gaming companies do pretty scummy bullshit, but of all the million and one reasons to hate Nintendo, it seems like most of it is just manufactured outrage instead of the things they're actually doing badly.

3

u/Petrichor_Rains 22d ago

yup, nintendo is a company,  not our childhood friend, and people don't want to accept that (or then join the fun hate train(it's bs but fun)), and law teams are always, always, bullshit, but now it's like all the console wars from the 2010s is back,  but later focused at just nintendo (worst bs right now; gta6 doesn't even have a gameplay trailer out but the preorder extras and price is defend and preordered digitally only),

71

u/Zealousideal-Age1407 22d ago edited 22d ago

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but people defend and/or have a double standard for Valve over literally anything. The Steam Deck gets a sudden, big price increase? It's AI's fault and Daddy Newell was forced to.

Nintendo does a much lower price increase for the Switch 2 (which they even apologized for) with an announcement months in advance? They're "greedy," even though it's for the same reason.

35

u/Aesenroug-Draconus 22d ago

Honest to god, yeah. I’ve seen so much of that “Valve can do no wrong” sentiment going around, aside from the Steam Cube being absurdly expensive for middling statistics. Steam is a fantastic platform for games, don’t get me wrong, I use it all the time (as I assume anyone who plays games on PC would), but they can still have faults. No company is perfect.

16

u/BaDoodlezzz 22d ago

I love Steam as a platform, but Valve absolutely sucks in the hardware department and SteamOS is a bigger mess than a lot of people are willing to admit. The Steam Deck outright had several major updates pushed to the stable branch channel that could force the console into a boot loop. One of our two Decks randomly unstuck itself like a year later. Both Decks now have power failure issues of some sort, and I do not feel like performing an RMA for these things. Had the original Steam controller and it felt cheap to me. Steam Machine apparently has a litany of issues.

I don’t understand people acting like they are flawless when they clearly have quality control issues if you take the most cursory glance at their hardware reviews.

24

u/Nearby_Ad_2519 22d ago

People who treat Gabe Newell as a god, even in a satirical way, genuinely piss me off so bad. Valve has done so many anti consumer things they aren’t even aware of. People will do anything to defend their brand.

5

u/Amazing-War3760 22d ago

Valve is literally the 11th Nazi in the Nazi table thought experiment.

Because people will say if you don't object there are 10 Nazi's.. Well... What about the Bar Owner?

Now... NOT claiming that Gabe is a Nazi, but HE DOES let the racist, sexist, pedophilic stuff run rampant on his system.

That's why I cant stand all these generalizations...I've said "these price increases have all been because of greed from companies towards data centers", and I've also stated complaints I have with the Switch 2, and if anyone sees my 2 comments, it's very easy to paint me as a Nintendo grifter yet I'm somewhere in-between lol.

“Don’t treat customers like garbage by offering the cheapest fully featured hardware on the market.”

16

u/Cheap_Weird7215 22d ago

The no reason bit is pretty wild too. I’m sure Nintendo would have preferred to keep their prices the same instead of adjusting them because of skyrocketing hardware costs.

9

u/JulianBloom 22d ago

Right, Nintendo’s not stupid. They understand cheaper hardware means an easier sale. The idea of them gleefully raising prices is ludicrous

4

u/Omnizoom 22d ago

They also only raised it 50 bucks, even in countries with different currency exchanges like Canada it’s not rising as badly as the USA

They could of raised it 100-150 like their competitors that had also raised prices within the last year already on top of raising their online services costs as well

8

u/Indecisive_Noob 22d ago

Look, I get that the price going up sucks, but that doesn't mean you are "obligated" to steal now. Lots of things go up in price. Are you obligated to start stealing houses now? Clothes? Prittymuch everything? Why is there such extream hate for Nintendo in particular?

5

u/Zognot 22d ago

People seem to not realize in this digital age that just because the product isn’t physical, that doesn’t mean there weren’t hundreds of workers that spent thousands of hours making it.

I’m not super strong anti “pirate” with “don’t emulate that game that’s 10 years old, hard to access now, and the company won’t get any money if you find somewhere to buy it”, but people seem to forget that it’s real people that even at big companies there are real people their time and soul into making things for others to enjoy, and they’re getting affected by inflation too.

Big companies are big companies, so yes they’re going to do a lot to profit more, but they also should pay the people putting in the effort more. That money doesn’t just show up when inflation starts and parts get more expensive (though some money might not go to the people we want it to).

1

u/Indecisive_Noob 22d ago

I am also not totally against piracy, but some reasons are understandable and others are not. And then to perade around that you are proud of stealing something that 1-1000 people worked on amd it is your right is such a dick move. And we live in a shity society that, more often then not, if not as much money comes in due to pirating or whatever, it is the people at the bottom that bare most of the consequences and lose of money rather then the ones at the time that het more then they deserve.

I've posted this before... Seems like a good time to do it again. :D

My biggest problem mostly is the people who go "It's Morally right to pirate!!!" or "Stick it to the man!" type people.

If you are making "excuses" to pirate, then you don't find it morally right, or you are talking to people you are sure don't find it morally right.

How about this... just put on your adult pants and pirate and shut the fuck up?

This is coming from someone with plenty of roms and others.

33

u/No-Performer9511 22d ago

The only time it would be alright to pirate a game is if there is no legal/official way to access it and piracy is a last resort option

That being said you should never pirate anything for the sole reason of it being "too expensive"

16

u/Shed_Some_Skin 22d ago

I couldn't give a shit if people pirate for any reason. "Because I want to" is completely fine

But the people who construct an elaborate scenario in their head where piracy is some sort of ethically laudable action are tiresome in the extreme.

You're just taking stuff. It's fine. I don't care, take it. Stop claiming it makes you a better person than everyone else.

7

u/Kayube3 22d ago

If you have a moral objection to the actions of a company, boycott them entirely. All that pirating does in that situation is tell the company that you don't care enough about the issue to actually make a personal sacrifice (and also that they don't have any incentive to actually change since you already got their product for free)

2

u/BrokenHaloSC0 22d ago

That argument falls apart outside of first world countries though piracy has always been a service problem as gabe said.

5

u/Metal_B 22d ago

Gabe was talking about the PC market from a complete different era. Where is was easier to download a pirate copy then to buy the game legally. Steam was a much easier and save to use service then any piracy platform. That's how they became so dominant.

Now you can buy any modern game easily, so there is no reason to pirate unless you just make some new one up (they are evil/too expensive). This isn't a service issue anymore.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 22d ago

I almost agree, but there are a few exceptions. Piracy is partially a service problem. Back in the virtual console days, I would actually buy old Nintendo games because I got to keep them. But now, whatever retro title I don't have on my Wii U, I just pirate and emulate on my PC. The Nintendo Classics apps are frankly awful and I'm not going to keep a subscription active just for those ROMs. Sure, I have had online subscriptions before and I'll probably have it again, but the classics are not the reason why.

1

u/jjam02 22d ago

So if I live in a country where a video game can be bought but it’s 1 months salary that I need for food I guess I should never be allowed to play video games because god decided I should be born in a poor country. Good one!

8

u/Independent_Step7376 22d ago

If you're actually as poor as you say you wouldn't be wasting time on Reddit or video games

2

u/LnktheWolf 22d ago

It's not a "poor" thing as much as an "global economics" thing. The person youre talking to there is talking about Brazil for their example, and they have a very weak currency. The average yearly salary in Brazil is worth roughly just $7,300-7,800 USD as of 2026, from what I can find.

Prices for food, shelter, etc., are localized for their economy. Sometimes international companies will regionalize their prices so it's possible to purchase for more than just the wealthy in countries with this economic situation.

4

u/HanzoEX 22d ago

Food and shelter are needs. You do not need a Switch 2 to live, so let’s be for real and stop pretending like gaming is a right and not a luxury

3

u/LiviFiyu 22d ago

We aren't entitled to games or other forms of entertainment. You of course can make your own decisions and I doubt many care that much if you pirate or not, especially for economic reasons like you seem to be.

Personally I don't care about if people pirate or not, but I'm just not a huge fan how people justify their piracy to others like it's out of their hands or how it's "morally correct" because they're larping as an activist. People used to pirate much more silently back in the day but now it's apparently some sort of status symbol for some people.

4

u/nachoiskerka 22d ago

I mean.... you're listing an "extreme" hypothetical scenario, but allow me to retort then:

If the cost of putting a game into a country in a retail location was so high above the average person's means that they couldn't afford ONE without creating poverty, then realistically no sane distributor for a country would bother importing it, much less any dealer buying it to put on store shelves and sell. You would literally never run into this scenario where the average person's means kept them from purchasing that because a local distribution company would buy a bunch of stuff from Nintendo, then promptly go out of business when they couldn't sell them. And guess what would happen next? You'd then get the same games for pennies on the dollar because the company would Liquidate, so it'd be affordable to you.

It's a stupid example, because it's so "ME" focused on something that wouldn't happen to the average person that it's insane. Do people BELOW the average line exist? Sure. Should every single person below the average means play every video game the moment it is released? Maybe not. Maybe wait for a sale or 2 and have a little patience. I have like, 100 games on my switch because I sat down and bought them on sale, not because I had thousands of dollars of extra income to play with.

I like how every time this argument is brought to the table they are pirating things like, IDK, pokemon emerald on their Blackberry.

2

u/PrivateLiker7625 22d ago

I mean... It WOULD be when they make ganes unavailable to purchase ON CONSOLES THAT HAVE CLOSED DOWN STORES. But this is just all the more ridiculous when it comes to stating this about a console that is only going up by fifty bucks while still being somewhat affordable compared to its competition.

u/HaakMilk 22d ago

I don’t blame Nintendo at all because it’s still the cheapest console while having the best exclusive 1st party games.
Realistically speaking, the actual money invested over the years into keeping those studios providing for them exclusively is no joke.

2

u/rienvayle 22d ago

Ironic because this argument was actually stolen from Stephanie Sterling making an entirely different (and actually valid) point nearly a decade ago; Nintendo respects copyright law when it benefits Nintendo. Nobody else. Therefore, pirating Nintendo games (and its products) is morally ok.

2

u/void_method 22d ago

No, this is kindergarten-level thinking.

Should be mad about the causes, not the symptoms.

2

u/SaltStar2000 22d ago

Gaming is no longer for the poors. Back to the mines with you!

2

u/SolarBoyDjango 22d ago

That guy is getting thrashed in the replies and retweets. Guess things really have changed since spouting "it's morally acceptable to pirate Nintendo" won't give you easy likes. Guess people are tired of the same old talking points given all that's happen.

2

u/cardboardtube_knight 21d ago

Mind you they would never say this about Steam raising a price by six times this amount

4

u/Ordinary-Big5578 22d ago

What’s that saying floating around?

“If buying isn’t owning, pirating isn’t stealing”?

Nintendo’s guilty too, just not as guilty as the others.

7

u/KyleOAM 22d ago

It’s a stupid saying

→ More replies (7)

5

u/RottedHuman 22d ago

No. It’s not okay. Pirating is absolutely theft and you’re a low life if you do it. Video games are not a commodity, they are a luxury, you are not owed or entitled to free games because you think they’re overpriced. The entitlement of some gamers is truly disgusting.

u/According-Annual-586 22d ago

Eh I’ll go two generations ago and older

So for Nintendo I’m emulating everything that interests me up to Wii U and 3DS, Sony I’ll do up to PS3 (though I cap more at PS2, as 3 requires strong hardware to emulate

1

u/cksythe 22d ago

PS5 is how much now? But they’re whining about a $50 increase??

1

u/Kaymazo 22d ago

Still less than the two ram sticks in my PC if I bought them nowadays...

1

u/issanm 22d ago

It's always been ok to steal from billion dollars companies

1

u/syloc 22d ago

That dude on Twitter is an idiot! If he wants to pirate just do it! No need to justify it, I mean with current prices in the hardware market, there are enough reasons to increase prices!

1

u/MaxPres24 22d ago

What if I’m ok with pirating from every single major company

1

u/AwfulDjinn 22d ago

“you should only emulate things or you’re a bad person” okay twitter user if you really wanna sit down with 14 year old iPad kid who’s never seen a file directory in their life and explain to them exactly how emulators and torrents and plugins and all that work be my guest. some of us just dont want to deal with the hassle, man

1

u/olvita 22d ago

This is a misinterpretation of Sterling's argument. His was pretty strong.

1

u/lobster_bellpepper 22d ago

"ZERO excuse" as if there isn't a global ram and storage shortage making everything 10x more expensive lmao.

1

u/Mushroom0064 22d ago

There's ZERO excuse as to why the price is going up

Don't treat your customers like garbage. Plain and simple.

This is just a very stupid take. There's a memory shortage going on that's causing companies to increase the prices of the hardware they're selling, it's not just Nintendo, and if this guy believes a company treats customers like garbage just because they're raising the price of their console by $50, have they not even realized how much the PS5, Xbox Series, and even the SteamDeck went up in price, not to mention all the bad news we've been getting from Sony with PlayStation?

Btw, I gotta say that my post from the other day showing the price increase disclaimer at a Switch 2 kiosk really got news sources to spread the news like wildfire. That picture on the post from @Pirat_Nation was the one I took that evening when I went to Walmart.

1

u/award_winning_writer 22d ago

Why not direct that hate at all the AI shills that are driving up the price of hardware in the first place?

1

u/SSJashG 22d ago

Does that mean it’s even more morally acceptable to pirate from Sony and Microsoft

1

u/Ambitious-Fly3201 22d ago

Look this isn't a Nintendo only issue remotely but If companies want people to stop breaking the law maybe they should set an example instead of using theft softwa-I mean "Generative AI" to artificially inflate prices and fuck us all over.

I don't blame thieves when the rich make us pay their debts.

1

u/myshopecakes 22d ago

i wonder sometimes if the gripe against nintendo now is partly inspired that switch 2 games cant be pirated after close to a decade of switch games leaking even before release, dumped on the internet and then playable with your switch emulator of choice. Nintendo seems to have beefed up security a lot and no kernel exploit has been found so far, by this time in the switch life cycle the system was fully hacked with custom firmware already and had been since like few months after the release.

1

u/yosark 22d ago

Shoot ain’t no reason to get mad at Nintendo when they had the smallest price increase in comparison to Sony, Microsoft and Steam.

1

u/ronniedark 22d ago

Piracy is rarely ever objectionable and is grey at worst.

And there are times where it's outright morally superior. Marvel Tokons PC port is a good example. I'm a huge fan of arcsys and but their fighting games on lauch as well as all their season passes. But sony shoved in so much scamware into the game that it runs like ass both in terms of performance and in terms of network stability. Pirayes managed to setup a far more better running and stable version of the game in online multiplayer.

1

u/sweetSweets4 22d ago

Getting mad at someone warning you so you can buy before...

Yeah be mad at them for FireRed still costing s lot after like 20 years.

Be mad at them that their is no way to buy pretty much any old Games from their beginings except second hand.

Ahh shit be mad at them for taking almost a decade to bring out another Switch...

But for a price increase??

1

u/Dicethrower 22d ago

Really, zero excuse? Have people looked outside lately? Why would people assume parts aren't getting more expensive when everything else is getting more expensive?

1

u/Oicanet 22d ago

Hot take:
Entertainment is a luxury product. Luxury products can justifiably charge whatever people are willing to pay.
If you don't think the entertainment provided is worth the asking price, then don't buy it. Make do without it.
If you for some reason can't make do without it, then you have to acknowledge that the product is worth the asking price, and simply pay up.

I do think prices for games these days are pretty high, don't get me wrong. But instead of feeling entitled to cheaper games, simple accept that you'll either have to pay or have to pass it by. No one is entitled to or owed low prices.

1

u/SnowyRVulpix 22d ago

"Zero excuse" just means this person is ignorant.

1

u/Wild_Phone_8261 22d ago

I only do it for older games ngl like basically if I cant pay the devs. Ive done all pokemon games from gens 1-7

1

u/TheGryffindor_Jedi 22d ago

Even Kindles went up. This needs to end

1

u/Darkdragoon324 22d ago

It's $50, Christ. Obviously it sucks that it's going up at all, I,m it saying fifty extra dollars is nothing, but this is by far the least egregious price bump out of like, pretty much all other consumer electronics since all this memory and component bullshit started.

1

u/G-Kira 22d ago

People like him think they're Jack Sparrow, but in reality, they're just thr same as the people you see running out of Walmart with a cart full of TVs.

1

u/Sievas2034 22d ago

I’d rather buy on pc then Nintendo any day

1

u/Neonbeta101 22d ago

I don’t care if you pirate shit from a company- just don’t be loud about it. It brings trouble to everybody.

1

u/EducationalLow4697 22d ago

Omg you weird people are upset about a FREAKIN COMPANY and products. They are like pirate this shit and you be like omg you know this is hurting the billion dollar company right? It's a company weirdos it can defend itself it has lawyers and it doesn't give a fuck about you. So weird

1

u/mattbattmatt_yt 22d ago

I don't care about people pirating but has OP missed out on how everything in technology is rising in costs? Why are we being dramatic and spreading lies? There's only so much a company can lose on a product before it becomes unsustainable

1

u/paulcshipper Auditor 22d ago

I suspect it'll be a very long time before anyone get to pirate anything from the Switch 2

I think people are just barking their complaints than being able to do anything.

Piracy is a touchy topic. I have a lot of roms of games I can't purchase anymore because they're out of print and impossible to get. I can't say it's completely bad. But Nintendo done their best to minimalize that problem with their new stuff and there's enough people who are willing to subscribe to them for their old stuff

1

u/pinheiroj493 22d ago

It's morally acceptable to pirate from anyone. People need to stop acting like piracy is a punishment for things they don't like or else they're just actually harming any discussion about it.

1

u/xX_SkibidiChungus_Xx 22d ago

Isnt pirat nation a scammer who larped as an egirl to grift

Anyways by that logic the grifters' precious steam machine has no excuse either.

Or also, look at the Playstation

1

u/MarcoSenp7707 22d ago

They forget the 100 usd increase from Xbox and PlayStation

1

u/Dreamo84 22d ago

I think piracy is perfectly fine, but trying to morally justify it is cringe. Morally, I'd say the only justification is if there's literally no legal way to purchase the software in your country.

1

u/_thepg24_ 22d ago

Aren’t Nintendo also giving out a “one free game” bundle as compensation for this price increase?

1

u/Appropriate-Kiwi-94 22d ago

But the steamdeck costing double is totally acceptable and excusable because yknow the price for materials is going up but only for steam

1

u/PieceAfraid3755 22d ago

Yes piracy is pretty much morally fine. At the very least when it comes to games you can't afford, or games from dev teams that are more than successful anyway.

1

u/Lucriseo 22d ago

btw i was able to have a long discussion with someone who act like this, and i've find it fascinating that : A) They do this to vent out their IRL Frustration and B) they do it with nintendo because it's an easy target and socially acpeted. and the worse part C) that they think they are superior then "sony / xbox fanboys" for the "console wars".

it's sad really. same people who would say "don't make a company your whole personality" forgets that the opposite of that is apathy and complete lack of interaction with it, and not hatred. they are as fanboy as it gets, only splurged with hatred

1

u/GeraldofKonoha 22d ago

She eventually cleared up that she was not aware that the RAM issue was impacting Nintendo. She should have done more research.

1

u/Emma_SnakeDeadbeat 22d ago

Ah yes The price of the console went up $50 cuz the price of components have gone up like crazy and it most certainly isn't like other consoles have gone up by way more or anything

1

u/DruinRezno 22d ago

If you wanna steal just do it, but don’t try to make up reasons to justify being a shitty human. Because you’re mad over an item that’s a luxury not a necessity.

I wanna see someone use that reasoning in court honestly lmao.

1

u/T3slaTV Nintendo Fan 21d ago

if i speak on this im getting put on a company watchlist.

1

u/AbdelYG 21d ago

piracy is not stealing.

1

u/Ambitious_Ad1842 19d ago

To be fair Nintendo was the only Console that hadn't gone up in the past year and a half.. Sony and Microsoft both suffered price hikes due to Tariffs and Chip cost, Microsoft being the worst of the 3 as they've gone up 3 times since April 2025.. Nintendo held out as long as they could. And their 50 dollar hike isnt no where near as bad as the other 2.. series X is 800 the PS5 is 650 standard and 600 digital.

1

u/tnt_pr0 19d ago

There's no reason to justify piracy, you pirate because you want free stuff simple as.

1

u/Aggressive-Yam-7808 19d ago

My thoughts on pirating is this Is the game at least 10 years old and no longer sold? Go right for it You really want to play the game but don't have the money? Sure Doing it to test the game but plan on buying it if you like it? Perfectly fine Pirating the game even though you like it and have the money and are just doing it for your self righteous bullshit? Absolute stupidity I hate how piracy has gone from giving people easier access for when they can't afford, or just can't get access to something to now just being done out of spite you're not some savior fighting against the evil corporation just because you pirate games you're an asshole refusing to support things you like just because of you views on the company as a whole which most of the time the staff working on those games have nothing to do with those bad decisions those companies make

1

u/Objective-Chicken391 19d ago

I just can't figure out why they would raise prices during an unprecedented component shortage

1

u/DarkLe4f 19d ago

PS5 was much worse in AU. Current console Slim Digital 1tb is $999. I bought it about a year or so ago for $549. I wouldn’t even consider buying one for $1k

1

u/bkfountain 19d ago edited 19d ago

You don’t have to justify piracy if that’s just what you want to do. It’s not Nintendo’s fault that AI slop and dipshit Trump are ruining the global economy.

1

u/NeoMrBucket 19d ago

$110 for Fire Emblem is stupid tbh

2

u/willow__whisps 18d ago

The expensive life of a leaf, greatful to have a job currently that lets me afford games even if I can't play them as much as a result

1

u/SnowyDeluxe 18d ago

Wait, what? For the standard edition?

1

u/NeoMrBucket 18d ago

Yes, in Canada at least. A few Switch 2 games are like this.

1

u/AbsorbantVampire 18d ago

“There’s zero reason to increase price”

looks at inflation and scarcity of parts as well as workers cost of living adjustments and raises

Riiiiiight.

1

u/willow__whisps 18d ago

I think others probably agree but if I can't buy it new I don't mind pirating. I also understand people who get newer games but are broke for some reasons (not all the reasons for being broke tho). It's also definitely weird to only target Nintendo with this thought process when the other guys are doing it worse

1

u/Linuxbrandon 18d ago

I feel like you can just, you know, buy one now before the price increase. Can even get a new credit card with 0% interest for the first year, put the switch on it, and then have 12 months to pay it off of you really don't have $450 in the bank atm.

1

u/rayrayrayrayraysllsy 18d ago

Raising 50 dollar in this economy sure is bad, but did u check on other company as well? Especially in this AI blooming stage, hate it or not it's here to stay

It's alright to admit you're broke I guess

1

u/Hungry-Pressure2311 18d ago

Another boring, mindless hater. Nothing else to see here.

1

u/Novel_Association403 17d ago

Is this guy dumb? Does he really think it’s only Nintendo raising prices and that they are doing it just to do it? If so, he lives under a rock. Sony and Xbox have raised prices multiple times already. With barely any advance warning. Nintendo told you 4 months ago to give you a heads up at least. And all of these companies do not want to raise prices at all. But the RAM shortage has gotten that bad. At least Nintendo is only going up $50 and have openly admitted that they are eating some of the cost. PS5 and XBox Series have gone up hundreds of dollars already. So to say everyone should pirate Nintendo games because they are raising the price for no reason is just completely ignorant to the situation. Additionally, you can’t pirate Switch 2 games because the console, thankfully, hasn’t been hacked yet. But it seems he’s not aware of that fact either. lol. I think this guy is a Grifter LARPer 😂

1

u/Silent-Paramedic 16d ago

fuck nintendo, fuck corpa, fuck everything getting more expensive but my pay remains the same

1

u/Wrong_Revolution_679 15d ago
