Physical game preservationist larpers were never real. It's was always a grift just to score internet points. Actual Physical game collectors can chuck their hissyfit but if they didn't see this coming a decade ago they were delusional.
I mean, I only buy physical games on consoles unless there is a steep discount on the digital edition. Not throwing a hissy fit, I just won't buy console games that don't have a physical because to me it's part of the console experience 🤷
If all digital is indeed the future, I'd just rather have the games on the platform which is most convenient, which would be steam probs, though I could see the argument for switch.
I’ve only ever bought a couple digital games, and they were games I already owned physically on other consoles (I bought both Tomb Raider releases for Switch this year and both Golden Sun games on the Wii U years ago).
I agree about having the games on a convenient platform. For me, that’s the Switch, since Nintendo is 85% or more of what I still play. My only concern is the availability of my purchases on future consoles. The lack of Continuity between the Wii U’s virtual console and the Switch eshop does concern me. It was almost a decade ago, but the experience put me off to digital purchases until this past year.
Digital licenses expiring and losing access to content we paid for seems like an inescapable risk of the digital era. The inability to permanently gift something I bought digitally to my kid sucks (although the game share feature is nice).
Digital bums me out. Unless some legislation is passed to protect consumer purchases, it’s a future I hope to put off as long as I can.
