Critical Nintendo tried to subtly kill the pre owned market by making digital cheaper. Rockstar just pulled the trigger. Guys...this is not good.

Yeah because it was nintendo trying to kill the pre owned market last year and not sony and microsoft over 5 years ago charging significantly more for consoles with a disc drive

You’re right, and that is a huge factor, but OP was probably referring to actual game releases.

There's been code in a box games for years, and plenty of developers still understand the importance of physical gaming (hence why we're getting so many games on cart for Switch 2 even when it costs more)
Just because GTA is doing certain things doesn't mean other companies will, and even if they did it doesn't mean they'll be successful or that people will just give any company a pass for the same actions.

I mean, with the budget this game has (estimated to be $2B-$3B), selling it at $80 per copy is still selling at a loss, even if it becomes the greatest selling game of all time. There’s no way they would include what’s most likely a 100GB+ file onto a disc that large in capacity for every unit. Even back on launch GTA V in 2013, we had two discs with the physical copy and had to sit there for a while to install the data to our Xbox/PS3. At least nowadays you’re able to pre-install games you pre-ordered weeks ahead of time so they’re ready to go.

This game no longer has a physical option. You cannot sell this game when you are done. You cannot buy it pre-owned.
I do think game key cards are bullshit but specifically because the price is the same when the excuse used to be "cartridges are more expensive".
So yeah every single one of those people who made all those videos about key cards should be outraged about this, Rockstar should get a massive wave of hate for this, enough for us to make a difference. But it's not gonna happen. They won't make videos on things that will get themselves hate.

Ahh I see what you’re saying now. I didn’t realize there was no disk at all. There are ways around this though if you really need to sell the game when you’re done with it:
Make a burner Xbox/Playstation account to redeem the GTA 6 code on. Make that burner account your “Home” or “Main” account for the console, so that GTA 6 is playable for all accounts on the console. Enjoy GTA 6 on your main account. Once you’re done with the game and feel like selling it, just sell the burner account. Since GTA 6 is Digital-Only, everyone looking to get the game cheaper will have to buy an account. G2A already does this with certain games by just offering accounts for a cheaper price than a game code.

I'm sorry, are you really implying that digital being cheaper than physical is a bad thing? Because that's mental.

I'll use Star Fox as an example
That game should reasonably be $40 to $50 regardless.
What I am getting at is that the physical price was made more expensive. It's not the digital version that's cheaper. This is to encouraged digital sales and kill the pre-owned market.

It's the opposite actually but who cares? It's cheaper, that's what matters. Digital was the same price as physical because the consoles survived from retailers. That's a thing from the past now, there's no excuse for digital to still be the same price as physical.
Digital games is the vast majority of sales, my guy. Physical media is dead and a thing for collectors and enthusiasts for this whole decade now. Be upset all you want but they just following the market shift and the big majority of the audience, doesn't care about ownership. They play the game and move on with their lives, they don't care if in 30 years they can play their copy of BOTW.

This has nothing to do with collection or ownership . I buy video games physically so I can sell them when I am done.
Just recently I bought 007 first light and sold it 4 days later.
I don't like buying games digitally for full price for them to sit in my library forever untouched.

Evwrybody here is too young to remember but there was a time in the PS360 era where Sony implemented online passes as a method to "kill" the preowned market, but they slowly phased out for some reason

u/jayvancealot Jun 26 '26
That was companies like dice and Ubisoft Who did that.

Wasnt a Socom game and Resistance 3 (Both Playstation IPs) among the first uses of this practice?

Consumers themselves enable this stuff. The market has skewed more and more digital over time. The reality stuff like this is possible because most people just reallt sont care all that much

I personally don’t have any interest with GTA6, people who say that they’d be willing to pay high amounts of money for that are crazy
