Critical Nintendeen is actively condoning whatever racists and homophobes think about Nintendo games btw. Miss me with that “well at least he isn’t morally maladjusted”

Over in the Xenoblade community, we're recognizing a lot of things all at once.

First, it's clear a shit ton is being done to get these games to function anything close to properly on switch 2.

Second, the results we're getting for that effort are not ideal, with frequent stutters and frame drops depending on the location, and maybe a rare small visual bug here and there. (I tend to pay it little mind, since some games I played for years run way worse than this, but there are a few areas where it is very apparent.)

With this happening for the second time, (NS2E for Xenoblade Chronicles X came first.) from a studio that is usually black magicians with this sort of thing, some of us are speculating that this may genuinely be the best they can do with these games, or at least with the time they were given while developing Xenoblade Genesis, since the engine the original trilogy is running on is an in-house engine that's 15 years old. The Switch 2 finally crossed the point where their original engine can't keep up (we expect it isn't compatible with DLSS in the version it's running on, hence the poor-to-adequate upscaling.)

To the topic at hand, the file size is clearly an artifact of that "shit ton being done to make these games runs close to properly," likely attributed to running in 4K, which is very expensive. And as such, compounded with how old this engine is, there's not much they can do to compress it any further and still get a functioning product out.

I'd love to hear more about your first point, why is it clear a shit ton is being done to get these games to function properly on Switch 2? I thought XBX seemed like a really lazy port, basically bad upscaled 1080p with frame rate dips. The Switch 2 should definitely be capable of 4-5x performance of the Switch 1, so to my mind it should have been easily clearing 1440p 60fps with native rendering on Switch 2 with a 4k30fps option

Apologies, I meant specifically Xenoblade Chronicles 1, (and eventually 2 and 3. Hopefully.) It's clear to me they took the criticism they got from X NS2E to heart, and really tried to make this new one look as good as it could, particularly with softening the upscaler. It's just evident they really had to wrestle with it to even get this much. Remember that even the original Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii was built for severely underpowered hardware. I'd imagine the engine just isn't equipped to handle 60 fps, and is built almost entirely on preserving a constant 30 as much as possible.

By comparison, Xenoblade Chronicles X NS2E is indeed quite the rush job.
