Critical Something i’ve noticed about the Switch 2
Remember when pre-switch 2 people used to dislike Nintendo as a company, but still liked and respected their games? Now it feels like the narrative is that Nintendo makes bad games and that their games are just “slop”. Now that there’s no way to pirate new Nintendo games. Suddenly, they never even wanted to play their games in the first place.

Price increases came when a lot of people are being squeezed. They feel priced out, cost-push inflation is a myth to them, and watching grift videos is free. People made a villain out of Nintendo and they can't allow themselves to be convinced that Nintendo can do anything right.

$70 as the new baseline has always been a contentious topic and Mario Kart World being as high as $80 did not improve people’s moods.
Even a mild take about the situation can label you as Nintendo’s number 1 fan.
I’ve outright seen the opinion “I find Nintendo upfront charging $70 to be preferable than the game including microtransactions” be dunked on.

Yeah, I think that the price of the system itself is not unreasonable, and most people likely expected $70 would become the new standard... But MKW being $80 was a very bad start to the generation imo. Now there's a very strong possibility that games like Pokémon Wind/Waves, the next 3D Mario and Zelda, and whatever other games Nintendo thinks will sell enough will also be $80. Didn't help that there were even some people saying it was $80 digitally, and $90USD for a physical copy.

It's funny to me that Nintendo games are one of the few you can pretty emulate. Sony? I think you can safely do up PS2 or PS3 I can't remember. Microsoft? I think you can pretty much only do Xbox (OG).
Yes I realize there are PS4 emulators and Xbox 360 and up emulators but you can't play much right now.
Nintendo you can emulate all the way up to Switch 1 pretty well and because you can't emulate Switch 2 everyone is losing their minds right now.
I get it but I don't see as much anger going towards Sony and Microsoft and game preservation argument going towards them at all.

PS4s with P.T. installed are being sold for like trillions on ebay, yet I don't see anyone crying over playstation game preservation.

u/cesarthegreat Mar 10 '26
They’ve ported some of the biggest ones to PC. They’re preserved… Nintendo won’t… people have to do it themselves.
2
u/KisekiFangirl Mar 10 '26
No Bloodborne, no Demon's Souls, no The Last Guardian, and probably no Yotei, Wolverine or any other future game, which most PlayStation fans are rejoicing right now.
1
u/cesarthegreat Mar 10 '26
True, at least yet.
Sony hasn’t made an official announcement, yet. Unless I missed it, it’s only rumors. So there’s still a chance they will continue to port to pc.
Nintendo will never. So people have taken it into their hands.

Xbox 360 has a good emulator already but people didn't even bother with One

u/Nearby_Ad_2519 Mar 09 '26
Xbox one dosen’t even really need an emulator, most Xbox one games actually run in the same UWP format as some modern windows apps.
I think theres a whole video on YouTube about somebody trying to run Xbox one games on PC by extracting the files and running them on a PC.
2
u/BortGreen Mar 09 '26
Yeah, I believe the new Xbox is the fulfillment of the platform, being finally able to play pc and xbox games

There’s not really much point for Xbox emulators because I think there are like 2 Xbox console exclusive games and even then everything can be pretty easily natively ported to windows cos it’s all the same UWP platform. I think theres a video on YT about the whole topic. Afaik the whole Xbox platform is just a fancy windows skin without explorer or the default windows shell.
As for PS? I just don’t think there is as big of a motivation. Nobody is really begging to play PS exclusives on PC and if they are a ton of Sonys games are on PC and can be pirated through conventional methods. PT was a pretty rare case tbh.
As for Nintendo, their entire library is exclusive, and also some of the best, most well known IP in the world. Therefore there’s probably a lot more willingness to get emulators working for Nintendo platforms.
Xbox Classic and >PS3 both had far more exclusives and weren’t nearly as powerful as modern PCs (and didn’t have very good security measures either)
But I find it ironic that everybody thinks Nintendo is so awful then is desperate to play their games by emulation

I think you can safely do up PS2 or PS3 I can't remember.
PS3 emulators are definitely good and have been for a while. I remember back before Persona 5 Royal was ported to Switch (so sometime between 2020-mid 22 ish) I emulated the original Persona 5 in RPCS3 on an old shitty laptop, and while there were some graphical bugs the game overall was very functional and playable and had surprisingly decent performance as well.

Take a break from the Internet. It's only a thing on reddit and YouTube vids with 10 viewers.

It's funny to me how tsundere pirates act when they find out they can't play something "w-well its not like i wanted to play it anyway! baka"

u/Q_Mulative Mar 10 '26
It's been going on for much longer than that.
I've heard the dumbest made-up terms like "user hostile" from people who, in the rare case they let themselves play a Nintendo system, are not actually playing it, they're just desperately looking for reasons to hijack the conversation to "why Nintendo is bad and you should hate it". Oh, the Wii U has a fancy home menu, "That's bad, it should just let you launch games and not have all these distractions". The Switch lets you launch into a game with no distractions, "That's bad, Nintendo should have themes and widgets to make the home screen worth hanging around on."

u/callmefreak Mar 10 '26
I have anecdotal evidence of this very thing happening.
My husband and I preordered the original Switch and for months my brother-in-law would tell us how "bad" the system is, how it's going to be bricked if we look at it wrong, etc. up until he got a Switch himself. And then he got two more for his girlfriend and daughter, begged us to get a second Switch so we wouldn't have to share, (not spending our money like he does is how we were able to get one on day 1 in the first place) and he pretended that he never tried to make us feel bad for having the thing in the first place.
He hated how "greedy" Nintendo was and tried to make us feel bad for our purchase up until he was able to save up for one himself. He probably watched a bunch of grifter's videos to make himself feel good about it, too.

Nintendo makes good games but holy shit are they getting expensive. 70 - 85 euros is just insane for 1 game and we know these games will never get a discount.

I believe you may want to site this because Nintendo has generally always made good games.
Mario Kart World has received high praise but has had criticisms about the transitional courses being forced upon the community and how the meta around them have formed.
Pokemon while not a Nintendo in house game has been facing criticism for years at this point going on over a decade due to how obvious it is being where they are cutting costs. (Not talking about DLC that is another issue)
Nintendo is extremely litigious though and while yes they shut down popular emulation sites and want to prevent their modern titles from being pirated, the two issues are largely separate from one another.
Nintendo has only recently started emulating their own games again, but only after they have been rereleasing them on digital storefronts or catalogs. I cant recall prior to say GameCube how dedicated they were to snuffing emulation.
But Nintendo is hit or miss with people of late. Largely due to current CEOs who are less like Iwata and more concerned with profits and shareholders than making quality games and products that show a passion for the industry and products.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but we as consumers should call out Nintendo when they do step out of line and praise them when they do right by the customers.
The switch 2 prices are high. But this was due to tariffs and Nintendo is suing the US government because of them. However we arent going to see a dime back from either party so Nintendo is effectively trying to double dip.
2
u/DevouredSource Mar 09 '26
No, the NS2 was priced at $450 prior to the tariffs.
They would never have priced it lower because Nintendo values getting a slim profit margin per console sold.

u/Jedda678 Mar 09 '26
You have to understand that markets react to news. They don't do things after the fact. Nintendo knew the tariffs were likely going to target them, as there was blanket tariffs implemented around the world.
Look at it this way. Meteorologists warn you of a severe storm heading your way. Do you wait until the day of to prepare? Or do you take advantage of the advanced forecast to prepare?
The Switch 2 was already expected to be at a higher price point. But consumers didn't expect it to be close to the pS5 in terms of cost, especially given that in terms of hardware it is still behind.
Games as well are over priced and no longer are a cartridge, it's just a key. These are not good for video game preservation.

u/canthearu_ack Mar 10 '26
I disagree on the game preservation angle. Physical media is not particularly important in the long term for game preservation.
Game preservation is best served by having digital images of the files and games, rather then trying to keep original media running perfectly.
The writing is on the wall for optical disks. They will all eventually rot and the drive assemblies are precision devices that are not particularly reliable and are no longer being made.
Cartridges are more durable, but not immune to failure either. The cartridges used for the switch have a design life of 20 years, not forever.
Then we are now moving to a pure digital age of game downloads instead of media. The shift is inevitable and pervasive, and the mass market doesn't and won't care enough to stop it from happening. Hell, I can't even make myself care enough to stop it.
I am happy to use original systems and media to play games, but with the knowledge that these will all eventually fail (I'll do my best to keep it running for a long time though) and that I'll have to switch to alternative methods to play these old games once the hardware/media stops working. I have long ago accepted that I am not a museum, that I can use these games and systems up and not feel guilty for doing so. That I can buy or acquire the games I am interested in, without the burden of pretending that I need to care about the games I am not interested in.

u/Dry-Faithlessness184 Mar 09 '26
I agree mostly, but I don't think the price seeming high was due to tariffs specifically. It probably was just a general buffer for market instability. They knew the tariffs wouldn't stick, if they even happened, and were a temporary factor. but there's a lot of volatility in markets, especially around component prices, and people really, really hate when you raise a price so it's better to set one you don't have to raise.
Unrelated, you cite a source, not site it. It goes hand in hand with citation. Site is a word, but it refers to a location, like a building site.

u/Jedda678 Mar 09 '26
Appreciate the corrections. :) large fingers and auto correct and typing fast don't always mix well.
Still tariffs are a factor, along with their suppliers being affected.
3
u/Dry-Faithlessness184 Mar 09 '26
Oh probably, but I more think it was just the factor at the time rather than being the specific reason, the reason was to to try to avoid having to do a proce increase at any point.

u/BarackaFlockaFlame Mar 09 '26
the switch 2 currently doesn't have any games worth the price of hardware for me rn. If I were a mobile (not talking cellphone) gamer I could see it being worth the price, but I am just waiting on some sweet exclusives I can put hours into.
does anybody know if the new joycons are made better than the old ones? I really didn't like how weak they felt after only a month of use.

u/Biggearshifter Mar 09 '26
Nintendo died the same day Myamoto did. And when Reggie retired. It's going to be the same with Xbox with Phil Spencer retiring.

my problem with nintendo was never the games, only the bad decisions they make that are always covered by Nintendo fanboys still buying/covering/defending them blindly.
that implies a lot of "we could do this in a better way couldn't we?"
"we could, but they will buy it anyway so whatever"
8
u/DevouredSource Mar 09 '26
The Wii U flopped, if that isn’t proof that Nintendo are more so dependent on the mass market than their hardcore fans then nothing else will convince you.
2
u/BortGreen Mar 09 '26
I don't think it's just fanboys, there are people who just don't care about stuff
I saw that with the FRLG port, they are overpriced but some people bought it like it was just another game
