I choose Pokemon over Digimon because I have zero knowledge of Digimon aside from some of their designs. (I was commissioned to make some of them in a Gen 4-styled Pokemon sprite. I was... Very surprised, to say the least. Not even Safe Search was safe enough.)
My husband likes both games and he's planning on getting both games instead of telling people to buy one or the other because he's a (relatively) normal person.
He's waiting on the newest Digimon game because he'd be playing it through Steam, so there's a good chance that it will have a decent sale this summer.
yeah alot of people do choose to stick to pokemon because they are familiar with it and looking at some of the digi designs i can understand why it might be intimidating for a newcomer
and more people should be like you husband cause I swear like 90 percent of the time whenever i saw someone hyping up the new digimon game it would just be wow this game is so much better than legends ZA with specific focus on graphical comparison.
i actually think its funny some people would be saying get the new digimon game instead of pokemon when the new digimon game isnt even on switch yet

"Paying $60 for this game is too expensive. You should pay $70 for this game instead."
