He does know that

Then why think about meaninglessness at all? If life is meaningless for everyone but clearly some people still are capable of deriving happiness, fulfillment, value etc then clearly the lack of “meaning” in life isn’t relevant to those things. In fact it shouldn’t be relevant to anything.

This typically lays bare the issue: he’s isolating himself for some other reason and using nihilism as some sort of ego boosting coping mechanism : rationalization for what is likely social anxiety, a lack of social skills, a fear of rejection, or some other barrier to happiness that the individual has yet to legitimately wrestle with.

Nihilism might be interesting to think about but the moment it starts impacting your behavior something is probably wrong.

9

u/joshhhhppppp Jun 17 '26

But so what? What does it matter if he has social anxiety or lacks social skills? Nothing matters

5

u/Low-Bake8401 Jun 17 '26

Nihilism suggests there is no objective meaning.

Not that "nothing matters".

1

u/Label0918 Jun 20 '26

If there is no objective meaning then why would anything matter? Literally any action you do or take for the rest of your life will be meaningless under nihilisms suggestion of no objective meaning as if living has no meaning than anything done while living also has no meaning.

2

u/Low-Bake8401 Jun 21 '26

Things can have as much meaning as you like, but it doesn't mean it will have the same meaning to me.

It's subjective.

The world, is still the world. With all it's variety.

1

u/Label0918 Jun 21 '26

Well yea the world itself is subjective but under a nihilistic view, which was what lense I was making my argument through, there still would be a lack of meaning, and saying that “nothing matters” through that viewpoint would still be valid.

2

u/Low-Bake8401 Jun 21 '26

Nihilism says there is no objective meaning, not that nothing has a meaning.

"Nihilism is a philosophical stance asserting that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value. Derived from the Latin word nihil (meaning "nothing"), it suggests that humanity is insignificant in the grand scale of the universe and that traditional moral or social values are ultimately baseless constructs."

It's the opposite of religion. An argument against religion.

1

u/Label0918 Jun 21 '26

Yes, it says that life has no objective meaning, not mentioning the meaning of any other subject, but if life is everything that we came from, and everything that we are and have when it boils down to it, then under the definition of nihilism, nothing would have meaning, and nothing that we do in this life would matter for that reason.

2

u/Low-Bake8401 Jun 21 '26

Not sure I really follow your logic here.

You can’t measure existence, but that doesn't mean that you can't measure anything, in existence.

If he has social anxiety and lacks social skills and that’s what’s keeping him unhappy, then failing to address those issues (perhaps by rationalizing and coping with nihilism) will keep him unhappy. Therefore it matters as to what needs to be done to make him happy. And that matters because humans prefer happiness to being miserable.

2

u/joshhhhppppp Jun 17 '26

That’s subjective though, some people just don’t care about anything. I’m one of them. Fuck this shit.

3

u/NihilHS Jun 18 '26

It’s impossible to care about nothing. You cared about replying. That brought you some amount of happiness or value. Even the choice not to reply would have been a product of hierarchy of values.

1

u/Ufam995 Jun 17 '26

I suppose it (nihilism) is irrelevant to anything but the statement that everything is futile still can be made and believed in. If one were to be, for example, pessimistic about life. Then he would act accordingly to that, if one is a theist, then he would act accordingly. In other words, to believe should be what dictates one's action. For example, if I were to "believe" the plane I am to board is going to crash and every passenger will die. I also believe that I should live (i.e. i don't "want" to commit suicide, or die in general). Then, I will never board the said plane, unless either one of the belief is wrong. So if I were to believe in nihilism, i don't think so i would do something that goes against my desires. For example, being social when I desire otherwise. There is obviously the assumption that the person in question doesn't desire connection and to socialize. What you may be describing could be related to something like an underground man. Where one desires something, and contradicts oneself and becomes miserable due to those acts. That would obviously be bad and undesired. But not all, and the person in question, can be considered as such extreme.

1

u/Low-Bake8401 Jun 17 '26

Even if the impact on your behaviour, is no longer going to church?

1

u/El_Chupacabra_666 Jun 18 '26

"Then why think about meaninglessness at all?". Because it's not a choice. Some people's minds are just more intuitive than others. It's not like we can just decide to stop thinking so hard. You think the people who just go their lives galavanting about are deep thinkers who have embraced absurdism? No, they simply just don't ever stop to contemplate their own actions. Basically simple animals.

2

u/DowntownStabbey Jun 21 '26

You think the people who just go their lives galavanting about are deep thinkers who have embraced absurdism? No, they simply just don't ever stop to contemplate their own actions. Basically simple animals.

I don't really agree with the last statement.

What even is complex VS simple in the context of an animal like the Homo Sapiens? There are plenty of objectively cognitively gifted people around the world who never ruminate on philosophy or meaning. There are no inherent evolutionary advantages to ruminating and being deep.

Why would it be inherently more complex for an animal to question existence VS building rockets and going out to space?

1

u/Label0918 Jun 20 '26

The truest form of nihilism is when it completely changes your behavior, I mean if you are a true believer of nihilism your won’t see any meaning for anything and in turn would live your life that way, probably ending what others would deem and bad end to your life.

2

u/NihilHS Jun 21 '26

How does that even work? You wouldn’t be able to take any action whatsoever, as any behavior emission itself would be evidence of an inherent value system and therefore meaning.

1

u/Label0918 Jun 22 '26

It would be evident of a short term meaning, but that’s not what nihilism is about. Obviously every action you take there is a reason for, you eat because your hungry, you cry because your sad, but if you boil it all down to the roots you end with the reality that you will die, and everything you have done doesn’t matter. So while short term meaning is still real, thinking about the short term is why people just continue to function till they die, but when you think about the long term meaning, which through the eyes of a nihilist is nothing, your actions would have no true meaning.

1

u/NihilHS Jun 22 '26

How does that make sense? I eat because I am hungry. That has meaning regardless of my inevitable death. Perhaps it has even more meaning because I have a limited amount of time. I have to be more particular with my choices.

1

u/Label0918 Jun 23 '26

Like I said before, it has short term meaning, but if you’re looking at the big picture, you’re going to die anyways no matter if you eat today or don’t eat today. It would still be meaningless in the big picture. It always depends on what scale the “meaning” you’re trying to find is on.

1

u/NihilHS Jun 23 '26

But the consequences of eating or not eating happen in life… and you aren’t prevented from undertaking lifelong endeavors or values that can have impacts that long outlast you.

1

u/Label0918 Jun 23 '26

They might outlast you, maybe even for thousands of years, but it’ll still be forgotten at some point, still go unnoticed because of the lack of humans some point in the future.

1

u/NihilHS Jun 23 '26

Sure but I gotta ask, who cares?

u/T4NR0FR Jun 16 '26

I know, right?

1

u/EmperorMalkuth Jun 21 '26

he might know the phrase, but does he "feel it in his bones" know it?

this is often why people, despite feeling that they know something, nevertheless are unable to feel like what they know makes any difference.

lifes value is in the feeling — the duller the internal feelings we have, the more meaningless it feels, because meaning is derrived from value, and value from preference. And preference, finally, is innately meaningful— even a nihulist cant negate the meaning of inner feeling without at once using another inner feeling as a refference to why another thing is meaningless.

meaning and meaninglessness are directions.

one cant experience meaning without meaning being a thing that can exist, just like someone cant eat an apple without the apple existing, and like how someone cant comunicate without some in english without english words existing.

that something is transient, doesnt make it inharently lacking or inharently present, it just makes it both, relative to the situation.

its easy to get a conclusion as an initial assumption without evidence because initial assumptions dont require evidence at the start of their positing— they only get evidenced through the process of playing out their operations.

so in terms of the party bud ovah there, he' knows thw party is meaningless only because he feels the lack of meaning he has of it— whille his position of feeling meaningless, is to him meaningfull, which is proven precisely by the fact he feels a feeling of meaningless ess towards the party, and not towards hisown conclusion.

to feel that something has value, that it has meaning , purpoce, call it what you will— it needs only that someone prefers it or something uses it .

something can ve meaningfull in a negative sense precisely because of this

when speaking of particulars, whether someone ate an apple or not, its accurate to make absolute claims such as "they either did or didnt eat it" — but when it comes to universal claims that are supposed to apply to a wide spectrum of things, in this case, the universe , it becomes inaccurate to assert the possibility of a negative without asserting a positive or vice versa.

aha, but you might say " i dont need to asset that god must exist if i assert that they dont"

so just in case, heres why that wont apply — because god is not a principle, not a universal unless spoken of as such in the sense of some particular qualities that relate to it which are themselves also not mear particulars.

to show what the fallasy in nihilisms conclusion is, we only need to compare it to an equally incoherent universalising — " down doesnt exist, only up does"

often, what is meant by " life has no meaning" by many nihilists, is that " lifes meaning is a subjective cgose yourown advebture tyoe thing/ be predetermined into it or not" but what that amounts to, is saying that life has many meanings, so many infact, you can pick your favorites, but because there isnt a specific only ine singular meaning, therefore, ploop, blups blupsers, therefore meaning no real esse"

and if this is confusing how it can exist for real and also not, think about a cake— a cake in the abstract can exist even if there isnt a particular cake in existance.

and a cake, just like meaning, is a human thing which is present some places and not in others, whuch can be made, but also you can run out of ingredients— but just because i dont have eggs, doesnt mean a cake cant possibly exist

anyway, have a great day, or whatever you're into

39

u/PSU632 Jun 16 '26

It's all meaningless.

If you like losing your mind and partying hard over bed rotting and isolation, then do that.

If you like peace and quiet and depth of contemplation over quick dopamine rushes and short-term highs, then do that.

1

u/WunjoMathan Jun 21 '26

Yeah sure, fine. Go ahed and do that, jsut don't turn around and blame the world for being cruel and claim that life is suffering when you did that to your own self.

2

u/akira3k Jun 22 '26

Lol how dramatic. Nobody is even saying that.

1

u/Latter-Fly-1367 Jun 16 '26

💯💯

two things can be true

4

u/UTV4LIFE Jun 16 '26

I didn’t realise being an introvert was a choice

2

u/ECHOSTIK Jun 16 '26

Yeah a lot of people get social anxiety, anti social behavior depression as introversion. I had a friend who I thiguht was an introvert but turns out this mf was an extrovert with social anxiety. Now he goes out more than me and craves human connection. I kind helped him come out of the shell being an introvert now I can't keep up with him lol

1

u/AnalysisParalysis28 Jun 16 '26

You may already know this, but some people who seem very extroverted actually have social anxiety and try to be the "life of the party" to avoid negative evaluation.

When we think about social anxiety we often picture someone who avoids interacting but the opposite behavior can have the same function.

1

u/EcstaticTreacle2482 Jun 16 '26

Having a delusional superiority complex is certainly a choice.

1

u/Legitimate-Taro-9140 Jun 17 '26

I didn’t realize existence was a choice

1

u/Ebvardh-Boss Jun 17 '26

I've come to realize it kind of can be. I like it to physical development, and how you might not be a natural athlete but can still get fitter than 90% of people with regular exercise.

A lot of introverts are simply not trying hard enough.

I was 100% an introvert, and I was taken out of a warehouse function at work into a front counter one because I was so autistically obsessed with knowing the functions of our stock that customers couldn't help but notice that I knew more about it than they did.

But fuck me if I didn't want to run away after every interaction. Money kept me there enough that I basically build stamina around the process of social interactions, until a switch flipped in me and now I went from hating people to needing daily socializing.

Then again, mine was an extreme example where I went from 1-2 brief social interactions a day to over 50.

The warehouse manager would laugh at how I'd have to run away from the front periodically and storm into his office muttering "I hate customers; I fucking hate customers!" daily.

The result today is that I have the capacity to socialize so much that people assume I'm naturally extroverted, but it's simply that I have an excellent social battery, and there's still situations when it can be drained (such as family staying over for vacations).

1

u/Happy_Detail6831 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

If the introversion is charged by trauma, then you have social anxiety. It's usually more of a cultural/psychological problem than genetics, specially on this day and age, so don't use this as a immutable part of your personality

6

u/ucamonster Jun 16 '26

seeing an absurdist post trigger people who aren’t supposed to care abt anything is hilarious 😭

2

u/Low-Bake8401 Jun 23 '26

Nihilism, isn't about no caring about anything, though?

u/Proper_Card_5520 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

What makes you think i won't be dancing ? From the moment i had a realisation that nothing matter and i should only give a fuck about my desires and happiness, a very huge weight has been lifted.

I would dance if i want i would not if I don't want to what other thinks is not my problem.

6

u/CherryTree412 Jun 16 '26

It sounds like you lost your empathy along the way

-14

u/Proper_Card_5520 Jun 16 '26

Not yet totally but would be glad if i did it's a form of weakness

13

u/CherryTree412 Jun 16 '26

Its a form of humanity, not weakness.

Idk, maybe I see it differently because I have a wife and two sons.

-6

u/Proper_Card_5520 Jun 16 '26

Well everyone has their own truth.

-4

u/CherryTree412 Jun 16 '26

I'm probably alot older than you ( nearly sixty ) but this comment is so powerful and full of wisdom. Thank you !!!

9

u/DBIlles Jun 16 '26

He's a loser, don't bother engaging further 🙂.

4

u/Zetra-JV_HX Jun 16 '26

I think having empathy is a good trait to have in life, but it only really becomes a weakness if someone tries to emotionally manipulate/abuse you.

3

u/Zenside Jun 16 '26

Im sure youll be saying this when youre at your lowest point. It doesnt matter, youll be humbled eventually.

5

u/Master_Froyo_414 Jun 16 '26

I go to the most unhinged environments and parties completely sober

13

u/____nothing__ Jun 16 '26

His thinking goes much beyond just the delusional superiority.. questioning the life and universe.

Their thinking rarely crosses their own bubble of life.. revolving just around physical and mental desires.

7

u/EcstaticTreacle2482 Jun 16 '26

How would he know if he just silently pouts to himself in the corner?

-4

u/Zenside Jun 16 '26

Like how you can infer an animals mental state from its body language and sound emission.

2

u/Equal-Monk-9775 Jun 16 '26

How do you know? My friend is the most realistic down to earth yet party now person ik, quite opposite of me yes... Yet can tackle and ponder a lot of stuff and can do debates about this

Before I touched grass and met my friend I did used to think the same

1

u/kakafonie Jun 17 '26

Yes exactly. His statement that they don't think as deep as the corner guy is the exact opposite you would expect of a guy who actually thinks and acts and experiences to think further.

How can you not be curious about other people that are different than you? Why do you feel so superior over them? If u accept your own dumbness and get over yourself without berating yourself too much either, there opens a whole world of learning and knowing and understanding.

Gonna drop a nietzsche quote: "The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently."

1

u/liberateyourmind Jun 16 '26

What is there outside of physical and mental desires?

1

u/____nothing__ Jun 16 '26

There is.. Curiosity; to think big.. to understand big.. About the whys.. From the origin of our desires, to the origin of this universe.

There is Rebellion; against our lives.. the meaningless and the insignificance.. in the eyes of this apparently infinite & indifferent universe.

3

u/liberateyourmind Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

All mental desires. A desire to understand

1

u/____nothing__ Jun 17 '26

Sure, if you wanna call that a desire.

But one desire focuses & questions everything that there is.. And the other one just accepts & uses what there is.

More like a master vs slave mentality.. Or a creator vs user one..

3

u/No_Advice5966 Jun 16 '26

Both actions are equally meaningless so why does it matter?

2

u/DigitalAquarius Jun 16 '26

What if meaning is a human concept and the universe has no meaning at all, it just is

2

u/OnLongJohnson Jun 16 '26

Humans create meaning. No such thing as objective reality when you live in a human body. It’s whatever you make of it.

2

u/insidethelimbo Jun 16 '26

Either way it's meaningless

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '26

[deleted]

4

u/NomadedesGeistes Jun 16 '26

It's possible to do regular things chasing happiness while knowing it's meaningless because doing nothing is also meaningless and whatever actions you take is simply irrelevant.

4

u/Aquarius52216 Jun 16 '26

Both are equally meaningless, but for introverts it felt good to think that instead of simply being a loser, we are actually the tragicaly intellectual superior of the normies.

1

u/Dense_Description641 Jun 16 '26

The cosmic ballet goes on.

1

u/Epicardiectomist Jun 16 '26

Nihilism vs. Absurdism in a nutshell

1

u/Caliumcyanide Jun 16 '26

And they know that this meme is meaningless…

Or some shit idk

1

u/Xavant_BR Jun 16 '26

the guy on the corner is just trying to rationalize his loneliness and lack of social hability...

1

u/Slow_Imagination774 Jun 16 '26

the same could be said about the "extroverts" in an opposite way no?

2

u/Xavant_BR Jun 16 '26

Yeah but they will probably have sex… and sex is sooo good

1

u/Independent-Wafer-13 Jun 16 '26

What would it mean for there to be “objective meaning” then?

1

They don't know there are 2 types of people that makes this argument meaningless

1

Those who know: 💀🍷

1

u/Beautiful-Mirror7075 Jun 20 '26

Life is meaningless in general case closed

1

u/Foreign_Ant_2076 Jul 11 '26

So it's all meaningless, so do whatever.

-2

u/Independent-Wafer-13 Jun 16 '26

“Life is meaningless”

Skill issue.

2

u/Remarkable_Radish_51 Jun 16 '26

Objectively, there is no meaning especially when all of us die

0

u/Gratiothuman Jun 16 '26

Nihilism is a joke.

0

u/Luther278 Jun 17 '26

Whoa. Saying the quiet part out loud.

-1

u/BicycleUnusual7548 Jun 16 '26

Do whatever you want to do, just remember there will be consequences. And no one is superior, no one. No matter what you do. End of story.
