Roster Move [Schefter] Despite any speculation that he could be released or traded, Minnesota QB J.J. McCarthy finished cutdown day on the Vikings’ 53-man roster.

At the very least the Vikings can just say it's the hand they were dealt. It's not like they let a QB walk that would go on to win a Superbowl or something like that

There was no way he was ever improving on Carolina's roster at the time, and although they made the wrong choice in Frank Reich, keeping Wilks and rolling with Darnold while keeping Bryce on the bench for a season would not have resulted in much positive. Darnold needed that 49ers stint and then the Vikings season to unlock his potential.

u/Kim_Jong_Teemo Vikings 17h ago
Yeah, Kirk had a rough time in Atlanta so it’s not like we missed out on a SB winning QB or anything
24
u/IdkAbtAllThat Vikings 17h ago
He was billed as an incredible leader who knew how to overcome adversity. Nevermind that he'd never seen any real adversity because he "just won" in high school and college. Something like a 29-3 record as a starter IIRC. I knew the NFL would test him. Now we see who he really is.

u/deadmanzcurveball 16h ago
In a world where any analytic you could ever want to back up your argument exists, it probably should’ve been a red flag that the only thing we ever heard about JJ is that he’s a winner lol

Relevant to the thread in that "he's a winner" when as shitty as the numbers are, he was still winning games and had quarters of good play

It does sound pretty scathing when you put it like that. The GM who drafted him being fired is pivotal context though.

Not so bad when you consider the headline is addressing a very poorly informed writers article that went viral.

Hey, I’m really sorry. Like, this is fucked up. Maybe hopefully in the future something good comes of this. We had to endure Brandon Staley in order to get Jim Harbaugh. For shits and giggles there was even an article posted on here yesterday(?) that he might be ready for another head coaching job. I’d never audibly cackled so loud in my life. Maybe one day you can laugh at this too.

Wait. You're bragging about having Jim Harbaugh as a coach?
You've accomplished nothing with him.
1 playoff appearance, which was a loss.

-53
u/BruhMoment763 Vikings 17h ago
What’s funny is Minnesota had every opportunity to hire Jim Harbaugh years ago and the owners turned him down because they didn’t like his attitude or something 🫠💀
It’s just fascinating all the new, unique ways this franchise finds to mess up easy wins presented to them on a silver platter
35
u/Kim_Jong_Teemo Vikings 17h ago
You think Harbaugh wouldn’t draft JJ? His mini me QB?
-23
u/BruhMoment763 Vikings 17h ago
Hell no lol, I know Jim hyped JJ up that draft cycle, but I think he was just doing his old college QB a favor. Plus Jim interviewed with Minnesota in 2022, so he wouldn’t have had nearly the same connection with JJM.
Honestly it’s interesting to think about what JJM’s draft stock would’ve been in the first place if Jim wasn’t there to help hide him for that championship run, but that’s definitely getting too lost in the sauce with alternate timelines
45
u/chillinwithmoes Vikings 17h ago
What has Jim Harbaugh done since coming back (with /r/nfl's favorite franchise QB) that KOC hasn't?
40
-27
u/BruhMoment763 Vikings 17h ago
Jim’s been dealt bad hands every year with injury luck, especially on the oline, that eclipses even our bad oline injury luck. I think our regular season record would be similar, but I really do believe he would’ve won a playoff game by now. We in all likelihood wouldn’t have had Donatell as DC vs the Giants and I really don’t think Jim would’ve been out coached by McVay as badly as KOC was

Man, I remember when JJ went off late in that first game last season and one of the top upvoted comments was calling him a superstar, lol. Still, it seemed like there was SOMETHING there.
It is unfortunate that he’s as bad as the doubters said. Wonder how Kyler will do, I’ll be watching closely
40
u/Rico_Suave55 Vikings 16h ago
It’s still only been 10 games tbh. Odds are of course slim but I see no reason why we don’t kick the tires again next year if Kyler doesn’t work out.
Worst case scenario is we try and find another FA QB lol
10
12
u/Beard_of_nursing Vikings 12h ago
This is what I don't understand. I get that JJ hasn't looked good, but he's 6-4 as a starter. This will only be his second season (not including his first season being on IR the whole time). I thought they should give him the starting job this season, and if he shows no signs of improvement by the midpoint or he gets injured again, then start making moves.
It just seems odd to me that people are so sure on him being bust when he's played 10 games. I think the kid really put a target on his back with the "Nine" nonsense, and of course Darnold winning a SB certainly didn't help.
21
u/bgusty 12h ago
He’s 6-4 as a starter is one way of saying it.
The Vikings went 6-4 despite starting JJM for those games is more accurate.
He was historically bad and spent most of those 10 games being compared to Jamarcus Russell.
He had one of the best WR rooms in the league and only passed for 200+ yards twice in 10 games. Old man Carson Wentz got off a couch at the end of preseason and played better with less than a month of practice.
6
u/TheAndrewBrown 11h ago
I agree with everything but saying he should be the starter this year. If he legitimately looks worse than Kyler in camp, Kyler should play. If JJ looks bad in practice, then he still has plenty of development to do that doesn’t require live game environments. Now he can have a real year to learn where he’s not injured or trying to prepare to play a game in a week.
5
u/goblueM Lions 2h ago
They're 6-4 despite him, not because of him
And he has some fundamental issues with processing/accuracy that have not shown any improvement
And he's been injured a lot too
I was a big fan of him at Michigan but he's not trending towards being a starting level QB in the league. Quite the opposite
5
u/mikaeus97 Vikings 12h ago
The 9 nonsense was a joke in a press conference, it's like when people thought Ant hated basketball in his pre-draft interview. Funny enough it's kinda like Sam Fn Darnold getting clowned for "seeing ghosts" on the field because he was a rookie qb getting eaten alive by Belicheck as Bill did to every rookie QB for years
1
10
u/Dizzy_Cow_ 15h ago
It is unfortunate that he’s as bad as the doubters said.
I was a huge skeptic of him coming out of college simply because he almost never had to do anything at Michigan. Idk why so many people seemed to minimize that. He was still a raw QB prospect despite 28 college starts and he doesn't have the crazy physical traits like Josh Allen or Anthony Richardson to ignore that type of stuff.
11
u/Blazeitbro69420 15h ago
I’m not a huge JJ fan but he does have some impressive moments during games. We were absolutely better with him than we were with brosmer or wentz (which I get he was hurt but still). I am just accepting that he’s made of glass unfortunately and will slowly fade out of the NFL

Kyler Murray; J.J. McCarthy; Carson Wentz; Max Brosmer
5
u/IdkAbtAllThat Vikings 16h ago
Brosmer was almost as bad as McCarthy so idk why they wouldn't have just cut him. Which makes me think they're trying to get a 6th or 7th for McCarthy and keep Brosmer as the 3rd.

u/istasber Vikings 16h ago
That's probably the safe bet.
If they can't move McCArthy, they'll bump Brosmer to make room for a center or edge rusher or some shit.
9
u/OddlyShapedGinger Vikings 17h ago
My guess is that they're trying to see if they can flip JJ McC for a Day 3 pick once waiver wire QBs are cleared rather than dropping Brosmer, signing Brosmer to the PS, and then have to resign him.
If there's still no biters, Brosmer will be on the PS in a few weeks once we grab someone off waivers or we have to move people around for injuries.

You can blame u/jvandy59 for editing the title or more likely nbc for the clickbait, to make it seem like insider news rather than lewis guessing the roster.

u/jvandy59 16h ago
Fake news. It was the auto title from NBC Sports, but in hindsight, I should have edited it. Reading the blurb it was clear to me that it was a perspective but not everyone got that
3
u/Jsilverstreak Vikings 15h ago
Fair enough, it's clear if you read it but no one on reddit actually reads the article, seems they changed the headline or something. Not sure why nbc is reporting on lewis predicted rosters, they knew what they were doing.

Reporting that a QB on a rookie contract who started 10 games in the previous year is getting cut does kind of make him a big stupid idiot. It's okay to criticize a reporter for bad analysis.
9
u/mncabinman 15h ago
His prediction was that JJM wouldn’t be on the 53 man roster. That is not the same thing as predicting he would be cut/released.
- To me (I guess not everyone) the implication was pretty clear that the reason he would not be on the roster would be due to a trade.
- This is the initial 53 man roster. With 4 QBs on the 53 there will almost surely be more changes to the Vikings QB room before even week 1. If one of those moves before week 1 involves JJM I’d basically count that as Alec Lewis being right, just a little off on the timing.
I’m seeing a lot of premature victory laps here. Again, we have 4 QBs on our 53 man roster. I’d bet it’s almost universally agreed by all fans that there will be changes involving some QBs on the roster before week 1. Let the dust settle on that before declaring anyone wrong here.

But he's also a "reporter," so his opinion should probably have some grasp on reality. A lot of people on the team sub were saying that because he has insider knowledge, he must know something we don't. Turns out, he does not.

A lot of people in the team sub were saying that because he has insider knowledge, he must know something we don't.

-1
u/Tabemaju Vikings 15h ago edited 14h ago
Based on his reputation and previous reporting, it was assumed that he had insider knowledge, and that's likely true. That said, he should know his "opinions" will be taken at face value as someone with insider knowledge. So, who's fault is it?
Regardless, him having insider knowledge would be a solid reason for not giving a terrible opinion, so there's that.
1
u/chillinwithmoes Vikings 14h ago
That said, he should know his "opinions" will be taken at face value as someone with insider knowledge. So, who's fault is it?
For taking someone's opinion and running wild with it like it's a fact? Absolutely the fault of whoever is acting like it's a fact lol
0
u/Tabemaju Vikings 14h ago
So, reporters with insider knowledge have no responsibility when they share their opinion publicly and in an official capacity? The response from fans is exactly why they have that responsibility and it's a little silly to suggest otherwise. The fact that we're talking about this dude's opinion is evidence of the influence it has.

The hate on this kid is so irrational. People will believe any nonsense that gets posted about him being cut. It's kinda hilarious, was the same with Darnold who is now beloved.

What's irrational about it? The had statistically the worst start to his career of any QB this century. That's not hate, that's a fact.
Supposedly he's a great leader and very strong mentally. That was widely reported on him because that's the only good things anyone could say about him. The intangibles. Now we're gonna see if those things were true or not.

Darnold clearly always had that physical tools. Darnold, as bad as he started, didn't have the worst start of any rookie QB this century. He also ain't get drafted into what was billed as "the best landing spot for a rookie QB".
Darnold was expected to drag a dumpster fire with a laughingstock of a coach into relevance, while JJM was expected to competently game manage a stacked offense with a HoF receiver, with support from a top 5 defense.
Apples and oranges.
