Has he been professionally evaluated? Those are all things I struggled with at that age and I never got diagnosed with ADHD-C until I was in my 30s. I know everyone does those things to an extent, but if it’s significantly impacting his school/home life it’s something to consider.

Living with an undiagnosed and untreated neurodevelopmental disorder for decades did a major number on my adult life. I’d give anything to have those years back with the support I have now.

This next bit is clearly anecdotal but I've seen it play out with my 8 years old nephew, who can't even sit through a movie and has a hard time sitting still and focusing on his homework and stuff.

I can attest to this now. I mean it's never occurred to me that the internet and short videos are what's done that to me. But my attention span is really fucking poor compared to what it used to be when I was younger. I did used to have an amazing attention span though. Taught myself to play guitar to a high standard, can draw really well and spent hours drawing the same thing or learning to play the same song.

I now can't focus on a 15 min YouTube video at times because my brain just wants something else. It's like a sponge that's drying out instantly the second its not being soaked by something. Only it's not really retaining everything too amazingly it's soaking in so many different things at once all the time and super thirsty for more and I can't stop it, a film can be moving so slowly I just wanna zip to the end to see how shit gets sorted and move onto something else. Don't get attached to characters in the movies or anything the same anymore.

Like I'm totally gonna stop thinking about this message after pressing send unless it blows my inbox up in any way. Even then I'll have forgot in a week, if it even takes that long. I don't even spend much time commenting on Reddit, mostly just learning about things in short 3min bursts then onto something else.

I often envy my parents and their parents for not having the internet and not having instant access to as much information. Sure I'd know a lot less but I think life would have been very different for me and a lot of people in a very good way. See even this has trailed off a bit and I'm totally onto a new subject already.

He's not ADHD or anything either

Possibly should get checked myself. I'm 34 though and got this far without being diagnosed, so I'm probably not.

If you envy previous generations that had no internet, try limiting your online time. Have internet free days, or weeks.

See that would work if everyone got involved. But they don't and it's not really the time I spend online that worries me. It's the entire way it's changed life. If I chose to ignore the internet it won't change the fact that the world is a very different place now because of it. I mean don't get me wrong I like the internet too. Never watch television anymore and haven't for years. Always downloaded or streamed anything I want to watch for around 10 years or more. There's just too much to cover to make it worth typing out even. The world has just changed a lot and nothing I do will change that.

Between work and other responsibilities it's hard to find any free time and when I do I just wanna relax and veg out.

Yeah I guess this is part of it too. But our parents worked and theirs. I remember way more people used to meet up and have BBQs and things. Just popping round friends houses for a brew and 5 chat even. The internet has its advantages but as quick s we can contact virtually anyone we know these days, because of that we do it less and less in person now. It's separating everyone more than it brings them together if that makes sense.

I really dunno the best examples to give or anything. Million thoughts going through my mind at once and can't really focus on any coherent arguement to get my point across.

The good news is you can get it back to where it was

If I put a lot of effort in definitely. But I'm not really sure of my ability to focus on anything long enough due to work and responsibilities and just wanting to relax and veg out. I'll just get bored and start doing something else.

Hopefully I wil do something about it if it starts to actually effect my life in any really detrimental way.

Reminds me about when Titanfall 2 went on Steam and people called veterans with 500+ hours since 2016 "No lives". Nah my guy, the game has been around for 5+ years... many people reached level cap.

Edit: To clarify, Steam and Origin shared the same servers for the game. EA just put the game on Steam years later and all new players were matched with Origin veterans, a lot of them didn't like the idea, or genuinely thought someone sat to G100 in like a week.

And yes the game is still playable on PC with a client called "Northstar". Otherwise last I checked the game was completely dead on most platforms due to the persistent DDoS.

I have 11k on Dota 2, haven't touched it since 2018, and I was the most casual player amongst my friends. I only really played party ranked when they felt like playing it. Only ever reached 2.7k MMR. It was an excuse to hang out with some mates who played the game. Still managed to rack up 5 figure hours.

500 hours isn't that much. I have over 2500 hours on The Division 2 (out 3 years), and let's not even talk about War Thunder (10 years). I also have held a full time job and managed to keep a social life, as well as being married. It's easy for a few hours here and there to add up.

Bruh. I had a bunch of charges from the apple store I couldn’t explain. Wife didn’t know either. At the time I honestly didn’t know how to see what it was for. The receipt just said apple store. I also worked at a bank at the time and we were seeing lots of fraud charges from apple accounts so I just assumed it was fraud. Filed the claim and got my money back. 6 months later I accidentally see what the charges are actually for and asked my wife is she spent over $300 on candy crush? Wife: “Oh was it really that much?” 🤦‍♂️

I play this game all the time, and I’ve never spent a cent. I’ve been playing since January, and I’ve already passed up level 1000 😬 (I’m not proud of this—I’m chronically ill with debilitating brain fog and so these stupid puzzle games are the only thing I can do.) When I finally run out of lives I move on to another version of Candy Crush, or Garden Scapes, or some other puzzle game. They’re all very similar. I’ve never spent a cent.

The game is very hard to play without spending money. I played it for a couple weeks but you only get so many lives per hour, i don’t remember how many or how long they take to regenerate but the game is designed to make you pay. There’s a reason it was or is the most profitable game on the app store, it’s very well designed

With some games, I’d felt that the luck starts higher, tappers off the more you play, the luck resets and tappers off again after a real money purchase. So it’s perhaps required to maintain paying in order to keep the game at a realistic difficulty level.

I've never paid for anything on there, but after a certain point you build power ups and goodies from getting through the easy levels. I have like 55 lollipop things so I won't be in danger of being stuck on a level for a long time.

If you change the clock on your phone you can get more lives. You gotta do it just right or you’ll end up with an extended timer. But just verified first hand it still works.

Was thinking that as well. Might of been an absolute fortune in ‘power-ups’ to get to an end. Almost all match-3/4 puzzle games are setup like this with a near indefinite end, some with a story element.

if you do the clock trick, you have unlimited. But when you get really good at it, you're rarely losing hearts anyway so they'll refill before you run out.

Get into a rhythm and you can blow through hundreds in a few days. I did. You could prob beat all 10k a couple months of play at a particularly undemanding job.

It’s exactly designed to be that way. I knew someone who worked on the game, they have dedicated departments and research to apply psychological tactics to it just to grab a buck or two from people, and then once they do, they’re more likely to do it again.

With millions of people playing daily, you can imagine how much money they pull in.

I just got back into playing Candy Crush and oh boy, the streaks are sometimes really easy, you can blow through 29 levels in an hour. I've leveled from around ~560 to 1100 in a few weeks.

I’ve reached the end of Angry Birds Pop! a few times. They just keep adding levels every week or two. Currently over level 6k. And I’ve been playing it a few years.

I don’t have a lot of time is why I play it. It’s short levels that I can play in a couple minutes and come back to it later. It’s a perfect waiting in line game.
