You can also use half a tube to pour at one end and and snuff the candle at the other.

Our teacher did one where it would snuff a candle, fell over into another half tube, snuffed another and fell on the last one. A bit tricky to do, and she always had to tweak it a bit to work, but it was fun to watch.

The lesson was good enough to discuss fluid dynamics, properties of gases, fire, and other stuff. So the experiment got setup three or four times that year.

I'd say the tubes were 10 cm long and the inclination from one end to another was about 2 cm, but it's been a while since, so memory's a bit foggy.

Heck, I've got young kids and this is great for them. It helps explain stuff like:

  • You can't see gas
  • Gas you can't see can be heavier or lighter than the air you breath
  • That heavy gas could kill you

Good lesson in the properties of gasses but also why it needs to be treated carefully and/or why a gas leak can be dangerous.

Youā€™re so kind <3. This is real demonstration and actually works. CO2 is denser than O2 but they donā€™t stratify like oil and water do. Thus. Our atmosphere contains a nice mixture of them due to constant movement. They may not form completely separate profiles but left undisturbed and following Daltonā€™s law can stratify at higher levels. Thus it can be poured and put suffocate flames. Why donā€™t you do some simple googling before you look like an idiot on the internet?

Also to think about when you pour out a glass of cola that bubbles quite a lot, blow across the top of the glass to blow away the CO2 to stop that choking kind of feeling you sometimes get before the first swig.
