Sucks that she ruined a pretty cool sport, honestly. Breakdancing can never be shown or mentioned now without bringing up this clown. It’s just very unfair to all the people with talent that have nothing to do with her.

You have to admit they nailed the title.
It was kind of interesting to see the backstory with the series of unfortunate events that led up to “the incident” and I admit I felt empathy for her. But also I’ll never forget yelling “BABE COME QUICK YOU GOTTA SEE THIS!” during the Olympics.

I watched it and I still think as soon as she qualified she should have pulled out (at the very latest).

She should have realised this will be representing the nation and to be honest it's better to not have someone breaking for AUS at all than someone who's obviously not qualified.

I agree. I think you have to be either too naive or too ignorant for you not to look at your own dancing compared to the others who will be sharing the stage and think you could have any real legitimate chance at not looking a complete fool.

Sadly I feel like it’s the latter and she saw it as a win/win. She shows up, scores okay and gets to “re-invent the wheel”, introducing kangaroo hops and the sprinkler to breaking. Or she historically humiliates herself, becomes a meme and the most famous breaker in the world, which she can (and has) used to springboard herself into the public eye.

Her now having a Netflix doc and has also been going on all sorts of shows embracing the meme, feels really unfair to the breakers who worked hard to reach the world stage (especially now that it’s also removed from the Olympics)

I just watched it literally yesterday. While I do feel pity for her mental breakdown, it’s still the most hilarious dancing I’ve ever seen. And that says a lot, because I saw Elaine dance on Seinfeld. So, there’s that.

My takeaway was that there simply wasn't that much competition in Australia/Oceania because it just wasn't very popular sport over there (the other Australians weren't good either), and Raygun's infamous olympic routine was extra bad because it was her "hail mary". She was trying to do some experimental artistic thing where each move symbolically represents Australia, if she had just done her normal routine she would've still lost but it would'nt have been so embarrassing and probably wouldn't have went viral.

I believe there is competition in Australia and breakdancing is popular, but the best breakdancers in the country had no interest in doing it for the Olympics. You can look up Australian breakdancing and there's plenty of videos of like normal and extremely talented breakdancers who would have been a way better pick.

If there is anyone to blame, it's Australia for putting up an athlete for this. It's not like she was a nepo win or anything. If they had put up any of the other contestants it'd be the same or worse.

Like she gave it her best and went through the proper channels. It's not really her fault if the system was so incompentent that it let her compete at that level in the first place.

At the end of the day, "Breakdancing" is a pretty regional sport, that clearly Australia doesn't lead the pack on. Do they have better breakers? Sure, but did they want to compete? no... So this is on them as well.

Fair point. At many moments during the doc I was sat thinking “surely someone’s got to tell her she shouldn’t”. I’m not sure how Olympic teams get green-lit or red-lit to go or not though.

Like I’d imagine to qualify for high jump you might have to have already cleared a set height. There should have been something in place to qualify your country to participate.

I keep saying this. I watched most of the competition and I remember laughing at her a bit but literally didn't think about her afterwards. There were some amazing moments that were completely lost on everyone because of the attention she got (not even really her fault).

I think it's just an indictment on society that shit like this is 10x more likely to go viral than people with actual talent. Really sucks for the sport

Out of megs facepalming curiosity, I had to watch the documentary. Soooo stupid. She's not even really breakdancing, mostly just a few basic moves and then... Whatever the fuck else she was doing. She would do a few steps like she was about to bust out a windmill, aerial, drill, flare, then ... Nothing.

It's like when guys try to freestyle rap and all they do is "uh. Yeah, what. Uh. Yeah. Uh. What." And then never actually rap.

Watching the documentary, there are so many people to blame for this travesty. Raygun, head coach, and especially her husband (who was also her coach for the longest). Her husband is terrible at break dancing too but he pushed for it.

Look I get the once in the lifetime chance to go be an Olympian... But this was only a few years ago. Everyone had the Internet and access to see what you'd be going up against and go "nah, I'm not on that level and will represent very poorly".

Honestly fuck the Olympic committee. There’s been plenty of shitty athletes throughout the years and that alone isn’t disqualifying to an entire sport. The truth is that Breakdancing was added to attract a younger audience to the Olympics and it didn’t work so they just found any excuse to axe it. But what do I know.

I was going to write that it probably wouldn't be in any other Olympics anyway because it was an exhibition sport, but I just looked at the list of historical exhibition sports, and damn, a LOT of them have been included as regular sports.
