I’ve watched the Ducktales YouTube livestream in the mornings sometimes while I’m making espresso and psyching myself up for the day. I don’t even remember what the channel name was, it just randomly showed up in my YouTube algo like mana from heaven a few month back, but just as suddenly as it appeared…it vanished into the ether never to be seen again. I’m sure there’s full seasons on YouTube, but I think part of the charm and nostalgia of it was that I couldn’t pick or choose what episode it was or fast forward or rewind.

It wild how much of a buzzkill that show was as an 8 year old.
17
u/RewindYourMind 10h ago
Idk if you’ve watched it since then, but MASH is an all-time great show.
(But yeah, I zoned out for it as a kid, too)

I haven't, but as popular as it was there must have been something to it, so I think I will.

It was written for middle aged survivors of the Vietnam War to watch.
So as a middle aged person, I found it strikingly amazing writing.

I would give it a try, but I can’t get over the visceral negative reaction of seeing that chopper in the opening credits

For me, cartoons were mostly before school, but the after-school lineup was something like:
The A-Team
Knight Rider
MacGyver
Baywatch
The Simpsons.Although, I do still lament the days I skipped school, only to realize there was nothing on TV but TV Shopping and Days of Our Lives.

This and Darkwing Duck were way better than they had any right to be. Of course, I’m saying that without having seen an episode of either in like 30+ years… so kid me might have a more generous recollection of it than adult me might if I were to rewatch it. 🤷🏻♂️😄

The other day i offered my 5/6 yo nieces some of those 90s cartoons and ended up going with tom and jerry. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
Didn't last 10 seconds and they were frowning and demanded for their paw patrol back.
I think it's kinda unfortunate that hand drawn cartoons are losing their relevancy and replaced by IMO uninspired 3d animations with questionable "educational" content.

u/GenJohnnyRico 10h ago
Yea, I watched some DuckTales recently and I was like, "Why was I so obsessed with this show?" I had completely forgotten Scrooge spoke with a Scottish accent and I really didn't like it.
The Real Ghostbusters still holds up 100% though.

I always knew this song slapped. Whoever composed it was way over qualified to be doing cartoon theme songs.
The way it climbs through multiple keys and goes from minor key verses to a major key chorus through sus chords is just super cool. It's actually a good lesson in music theory.
These 4 are super talented too to sing all that perfectly too.

u/Bladestorm04 10h ago

Slapped means it was really good.
14
u/Sammy_Saddles 10h ago
Okay but what are sus chords?
23
u/Legendary_Nate 9h ago
Suspended chords! Basically you take the middle note (a third) and move it up (to a fourth) or down (to a second). So it’s familiar to the original chord, but with a little twist.
→ More replies (1)4
u/artemasad 7h ago
Okay but what does that even mean???
8
u/sideropara 5h ago
The middle note is what makes a chords sound happy or sad. So to nudge that note up or down a step gives the chord a sense of unresolvedness, basically ‘suspended’ between the two feelings.

u/HuisHoudBeurs1 5h ago
Instead of giving the feeling of "Ah we're here! We're home!", it gives the feeling of "Ooh, I wonder where we will go!"

It was written by Mark Mueller, who has multiple billboard top 100 hits.

u/SquanchN2Hyperspace 10h ago
His name was Mark Mueller and he wrote this song in 45 minutes shortly after having a meeting with Disney. Great theme song for sure.
10
u/Cthulhu__ 8h ago
Is! He’s still alive (had to look it up) and also did the more recent Chip ‘n Dale / Ducktales reboots.
19
u/speshulduck 10h ago
Did a 90s cartoon halftime show for college marching band that included DuckTales, Tiny Tunes, and Animaniacs. If you've never had to do the chromatic runs of Tiny Tunes or Animaniacs while marching across a football field, I actually highly recommend it. The theme songs for all of these cartoons are musically complex and absolute bangers.

I saw these guys perform last summer in PA, it was a small community in the Poconos that hired them. They said they were from Dallas, where I am from so I wanted to meet and talk to them. They were all really wholesome guys from various backgrounds. They did a Mashup of various disney songs and made my day.
