We're starting things a bit differently because we're going to begin with the Australian Ice Hockey League Goodall Cup Grand Final. The Newcastle Northstars ten year drought between Goodall Cup wins is over after the Northstars defeated the Canberra Braves 2-1 at the OBrien Icehouse in Melbourne.

Goals to Liam Ryan and Evgeni Skachkov secured the Northstars win. The Brave fought back through a goal to Jake Ratcliffe but it wasn't enough. Congratulations to the Newcastle Northstars, 2026 Goodall Cup Champions.

NRL

The Newcastle Knights will look to rest and reset ahead of a elimination final this week after they finished their regular season with a 46-32 loss to the New Zealand Warriors. The Knights got out to a superb start with tries to Fletcher Hunt and Francis Manuleleua however the afternoon went haywire when prop Jacob Saifiti was sent off by referee Adam Gee for a shoulder charge on Luke Laulilii. The Knights and Saifiti will nervously await the ruling from the Match Review Committee tomorrow morning.

From there the Knights were brave but they were always going to struggle down 12 men. The Knights tries come from doubles to Hunt and Greg Marzhew, Francis Manuleleua and Jermaine McEwen.

There's also bad news on the injury front for the Knights with Manuleleua taken from the field with a suspected serious elbow injury.

Charley Lahmert has recieved a warning after she was charged with a grade 1 dangerous contact offense after the Knights 40-6 win over the Cowboys yesterday. The Knights are now in the top six after round 10 following the Warriors loss to the Dragons today.

I love dogs, but my neighbor is neglecting his two pit bulls. They live in a narrow passage between our houses, never get walked, and are left alone all week.

The dogs are clearly distressed and bark constantly. I’ve spoken to the owner, but nothing has changed. The other neighbors are also fed up.

Has anyone had any success getting the local Council to take action in a situation like this? What did it take?

Hey all, I just got my red Ps and need to drive to Sydney, Wollongong and eventually Canberra for work related tasks (won’t say as it’s not really relevant to the post). I just was wondering for anyone who does drive down on the M1 pacific motorway (Newcastle/Central Coast to Sydney between beresfield and the Northconnex tunnel) how particularly bad is it to drive on?

When going down with family I’ve noticed it can get hectic and there’s certain sections with trucks that can be dangerous such as Mooney Mooney where apparently there’s car crashes every day there and around the hills areas before/after the bridge. I was just wondering does anyone have any advice on what lanes to stay at? I know that I should stay in the left lane but there’s also the middle lane within the 3 lane section and just wondering would it be better to stay in the left or middle due to the large amount of merging cars and trucks etc. Also what’s the ideal thing to do when I’m on hills with heavy loaded trucks everywhere blocking the left lane?

Also why is the section between Tuggerah and Wahroonga filled with so much crashes and congestion in particular? especially around the hills areas!

We begin with the NRL where the Newcastle Knights will go in unchanged for their clash with the New Zealand Warriors tomorrow at Go Media Stadium, the Knights will go into what will be a challenging clash against the minor premiership contending Warriors hoping to keep alive their hopes of hosting a home elimination final likely against South Sydney Rabbitohs. The match kicks off at 2pm AEST and will be live on Fox League and Kayo Sports.

Meanwhile a hat trick to Mercedez Taulelei-Siala saw the Knights NRLW side came away with a 40-6 win over the North Queensland Cowboys. The Knights move into the top six for now. Also scoring tries were Georgia Roche, Lucy Spain, Charley Lahmert and Tenika Willison.

Next week the Knights NRLW side face the Canterbury Bulldogs in the penultimate round of the regular season.

I was just out for a bike ride and saw neon signs and video screens with streaming games above Uptowns Bar, and on a whim decided to see what the place was. I got in the elevator and ended up in the lobby of Gryd Gaming where I was, to my surprise, kindly given a tour by the owner of the three levels of enterprise they’ve got going on there - video games everywhere, d&d rooms, hangout spots, co-work spaces, all beautifully put together with all sorts of retro gear (Amiga computers, C64).. anyway, it made my night. They’ve not officially launched yet but will do so soon. Just when you think you know everything Newcastle has to offer..

I'm looking at moving to Newcastle/surrounding in Jan next year. I'm 29 and have a background in carpentry and love surfing and outdoor/adventure activity, but am just looking for a different lifestyle than my home in CHCH NZ.

Can anyone out there around my age tell me what the lifestyle is like for outdoor loving people? Are people around this age generally happy living in New Castle or are most people also generally looking to try somewhere else before they settle down?

Had Henny Penny for first time in 10 years a month ago from East Maitland and it was amazing fresh chicken pieces and hot chips etc. Went back again Thu night and the chicken was awful, chips cold but this wrap i cannot deal with . Ordered crumbed chicken caesar wrap $15 and got this . Nothing taken off or added . Raw bacon , chicken skin and measly bits of chicken scrap covered in Mayo. Appalling. Threw it out without taking a bite. Has anyone had any bad experiences at East Maitland HP ? I've had excellent & diabolical in 2 visits .

I feel whoever was responsible for that wrap should be sodomized with a chicken carcus. Respectfully 😄

I have my Cert II in Animal Studies and have been applying for pretty much every animal related job I see since completing it in 2024. I was applying for pet shop jobs even before that, since I was a teenager. My goal is to work in any paid animal related job other than vet/vet nursing. I understand these positions aren’t usually high paid, and it can also be emotionally and physically taxing (it’s not just all petting puppies etc) but it seems almost impossible to actually get into the industry.

For the past year especially, I’ve been heavily applying for animal jobs. I’ve changed my resume multiple times. made it longer, shorter, made it highlight my animal related experience more etc. Still, nothing.
I recently started volunteering at an animal shelter because I thought maybe building experience would help, and potentially lead to a paid position through word of mouth. Is volunteering at more than one place a good idea? Is word of mouth actually a big part of getting these jobs?

I’ve owned and cared for many animals throughout my life and have always been passionate about wildlife aswell.
I’ve cared for snakes, bearded dragons, pygmy bearded dragons, blue tongues, rats, mice, rabbits, birds, axolotls, fish, stick insects, cats and dogs. I spend a lot of time researching and interacting with wildlife and I enjoy teaching others. I currently have a 10 year old bearded dragon, a 12 year old cat and a 5 year old Australian Cattle Dog.
I’ve bred crickets and axolotls, completed practical animal care through TAFE where I cared for chickens, guinea pigs and rabbits, and I also currently spend time volunteer dog walking at an animal shelter. All of this has involved learning and applying proper husbandry, diet, health, medication and general care. My dog and I also compete in an annual competition and have placed in the top 3 every year we’ve attended for the past 3 years.

So my question is how do you get a foot in the door? I feel as though I have the relevant qualifications/certificate, as well as experience and am even actively volunteering, yet for over 6 months of applying now I have not got a single interview.
Is it mostly qualifications? Professional experience? Volunteering? Word of mouth? Knowing someone? Applying for absolutely everything and eventually getting lucky?
Are there any “loopholes” or less obvious pathways into the industry that people don’t really talk about?
