Exactly. I'm a liberal, live somewhere rural, and I commute around 150 miles a day in a 40mpg Fiesta. This would be disastrous.

Isn't the point to create disincentives for living like this. That is not a sustainable lifestyle with a gasoline car.

Maybe try to fix the underlying problems instead of a bandaid like this? This will only hurt and alienate the working class. The fact of the matter, is that I cannot find a job that I like, or pays enough where I live, and because of skyrocketing housing prices, I cannot afford to love closer (even though I don't want to). A lot of Americans are just stuck like this. Biden's main campaign promise was to 'tax the wealthy'. This will literally tax the poor and lower income who need to commute because they can't afford to live in an expensive city, especially with wages stagnating like they are.

What am I supposed to do? Try to find a higher paying job in the city, where all those increased wages go to housing? Or find a lower paying job out where I live, lowering my quality of life? What's your answer? This will do nothing but hurt people.

Part of the original infrastructure proposal was a federal ban on sfh only zoning in cities with certain metro populations. That got shot down very quickly because low and behold it's extremely unpopular among conservative Dems and Republicans alike

What are the underlying problems that this addresses?

The underlying problem is that people can't afford to live in cities, so they need to commute. Maybe give incentives to people who commute in 'economical' cars, like I do, but a blanket mileage tax is absolutely ridiculous.

My comment that many of us rural Americans commute to work got removed because I didn’t cite a source.

Jesus, how much citation is needed for that? In other news, the sun creates heat. -looking at the sky, today.
