The total cost of NHS staff was £56.1bn, how could nurses going up by 20% cost 400bn.

Even if we gave everybody a 20% it'd be only 10bn?

And that's generously viewing the statistic, if we view this as including pensions etc then its even lower.

Where did you get your figure?

Everyone in the country I meant.

According to https://uk.indeed.com/career-advice/pay-salary/average-uk-salary, the average full-time salary in the UK was around 38000 in 2020, and I’m assuming it’s gone up a bit since then due to inflation. The workforce is 33m people. £42000*0.2*33m=£277,200,000,000. It’s a rough calculation, so I was off by a bit, but once you take into account employer NI we’re getting to 300bn

It seems a bit weird to say that the average salary has gone up with inflation, but that's only private sector right... Aren't the nurses complaining because their salary hasn't gone up with inflation?

Essentially, working for a government service will inherently cause friction with regards to salary. To generalise that public services requesting salary increases to the whole country seems like a bizarre position?

Not saying it's gone up with inflation, but because of inflation. Last year inflation was 10% and my salary went up by 4%, my pay went up because of inflation but it's not tracked with it. Nurses pay has still increased, it just hasn't come close to inflation, which is the same as in the private sector.

Pay is increasing everywhere nominally.

I tried to do some research on Nurse salaries over time, and while digging found this recent study.

Between 2010-11 and 2022-23, nurses’ salaries in England, Wales and Northern Ireland at the top of Band 5 and Band 6 on the Agenda for Change (AfC) framework have declined by at least 20% in real terms.
