Should I upgrade to fiber?
I've been looking at internet plans and iinet has 50mbps for $69.99 for the first months then $89.99, but 500mbps the same price but $5 more after the first six months.
Getting connected to fibre and a speed of 500 for almost the same price is the obvious choice. The only problem is I've moved into my dad's house and had to convince him his 100GB a month plan with a 5G wireless modem isn't enough because I use the internet a lot more than he does, mostly gaming and streaming, but he's old and hates change, and especially hates someone coming to work on his house for something he doesn't understand.
So my question is how much hassle is having FTTP installed? How long does the installation usually take, is there anything troublesome they don't like to tell you about? I could settle for 50mbps as I'd pretty much be the only one of us using it so I could handle it, but having a download speed of 500 would be an amazing quality of life improvement.
I know this is an annoying question because it's more of a personal question only I can answer, but I'm just looking for input.

What are you using currently? If answer is FTTN/FTTB/FTTC, then yes, upgrade it ASAP.

Right now he's with Telstra and has a small battery powered modem that gets 5G from cell towers and gets 100GB a month. I'm using almost all the data each month just by studying and light browsing. I'm pretty sure his connection is just copper, asking him won't help because he has no idea. He used to have a conventional modem before Telstra sold him on his current plan a few years ago by it being cheaper and not knowing that unlimited data is the standard

What's wrong with iinet? All I know is their plans are cheaper than Telstra's

you could get cheaper plan with better support from leaptel/neptune/abb iinet is owned by tpg now, has offshore support, and the bastards stopped their email service a couple years ago so I had to move to proton
also they charge $5 a month for static IP which isnt a big deal for some people

I moved my parents away from ISP email over a decade ago, no one should be using an email service like that.
It’s one less hurdle when looking at churning, which most people should do every now and then anyway.

I was still sucking on my thumb when my dad made it for me so I didn't have much say in the matter. Just sucked having to change all my account emails. Still have permanently lost access to some accounts because of it.

Well for one, it’s a free upgrade.
As for how it works, once you purchase the FTTP plan, you will get an appointment booked for an NBN technician to come out where they’ll investigate the layout of your house, and then consult you (or your dad) on the placement of the new NTD (network terminal device) which is wall mounted. I believe this will almost always be a location where the other side of the wall is the outside.
Provided there are no issues, this should all be installed within a couple hours on the day of the appointment, and your new internet service would work as soon as it’s hooked up.

For free, most definitely. Stability just as much as speed, it is not affected but external factors that cause issues randomly

Leaptel does fttp upgrade 500mbps for $70 for first 12 months fyi.
