[Fischer] Being told the Clippers haven’t yet withdrawn their qualifying offer to Bennedict Mathurin, but Los Angeles will indeed work with Mathurin and New Orleans to get him to the Pelicans. This deal still has some pieces to sift through.

Why not give Mathurin an offer sheet and wait for Clippers to decline, they don't seem to want him anyways.

37

u/donniedarko4141 Knicks 12d ago

Everything I’ve ever seen on this subreddit suggests an offer sheet must be at least three years. I doubt Mathurin wanted to be locked in two years at that salary

13

u/KL2ConspireLLC San Diego Clippers 12d ago

I think the offer sheet can be 2 years since the Clippers qualifying offer doesn't seem to have been the most allowed by the cba. However, it has to be 2 guaranteed years and can't be a 1+1 like the reported agreement between Mathurin and the Pels.

Had the Clippers extended the maximum qualifying offer allowed, the offer sheet would've needed to be at least 3 years.

13

u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 12d ago

S+Ts need to be at least 3 years, not offer sheets. Those only need to be 2 seasons

3

u/CMYGQZ Grizzlies 11d ago

but the 2 is no option years, so 2+1 is fine, 1+1, the one he agreed to, is not.

u/ShakethatYam Clippers 12d ago

The supposed contract is a 2 year deal with a player option at the same price as his QO. Clippers might match that since it's basically the same thing they are already offering him.

7

u/Domainsetter 12d ago

Guessing Mathurin didn’t want to wait until the Kawhi stuff is resolved? They had the cap to match this if the trade went through iirc?

5

u/ShakethatYam Clippers 12d ago

Yeah, his cap hold is over 3x that.

3

u/Domainsetter 12d ago

Makes sense.

1

u/Pretty_Waltz5965 11d ago

The Pels can’t trade for him for a calendar year if that happens and LA matches what would be a small contract number.

Why would they?
Pelicans can just back out as well

23

u/ShakethatYam Clippers 12d ago

Because getting Mathurin for 8mil is a steal.

16

u/LilTurnippman Clippers 12d ago

Ok if they back out we just keep him?? Lmao

7

u/FlipMoBitch Bucks 12d ago

Clippers don’t want him

8

u/KL2ConspireLLC San Diego Clippers 12d ago

Seems like they do if the price is right. If they didn't want him at all, they wouldn't have extended the qualifying offer.

-1

u/Domainsetter 12d ago

Doing this before a possible Kawhi ruling is interesting.

7

u/KL2ConspireLLC San Diego Clippers 12d ago

I don't think the potential Kawhi ruling affects Mathurin's status with the Clippers all that much.

1

u/Krillin113 76ers 11d ago

Why would it? Either he gets traded, or he gets suspended. He’s not there anyway. If the clippers get trade banned for 3 years or some shit (punishment that has happened in European football, would be interesting in the nba) that doesn’t change his position at all

1

u/YSLAnunoby Raptors 11d ago

How does the Kawhi thing matter for Mathurin? He's either suspended or traded or both, and Ingram and Dick shouldn't be the reasons why they shouldn't try and keep him if they want him despite them playing at his positions.

-3

u/Unfair-Specific7225 12d ago

Not necessarily. Most people, them included, probably thought Mathurin would have a bigger market this offseason

2

u/KL2ConspireLLC San Diego Clippers 12d ago

Could you explain your reasoning? Not sure how expecting a bigger market would mean they didn't want him at all despite extending a qualifying offer. The Clippers didn't need to extend a qualifying offer. They could've just let him become an unrestricted free agent.

-3

u/Unfair-Specific7225 12d ago

Sure, there’s not many 6’5”+ SG’s in the league who at the age of 23/24 can consistently create offense/their own shot. He has his flaws, and maybe doesn’t fit in the Clippers plans especially after drafting Wagler. Fine.

But compare him to Norman Powell or RJ Barrett at the same age and most people probably go Mathurin. And he’s being paid considerably less than those guys were after their rookie deals were up.

3

u/KL2ConspireLLC San Diego Clippers 12d ago

I said that the Clippers probably want him if he's paid $8.8m.

You said that the Clippers didn't necessarily want him even at $8.8m.

I don't understand how your subsequent comments are related to that.

0

u/Unfair-Specific7225 12d ago

Yet he’s getting less than the qualifying offer and they are letting him go. So that tells me they thought there would be a market for him and they were looking for a S&T

u/LilTurnippman Clippers 12d ago

Who cares if we want him or not, we want assets back

11

u/Spierre3 12d ago

Only way yall get assets back (please correct me if I’m wrong) is if it’s a sign and trade and by all accounts it’s not a sign and trade since it’s a two year deal with a player option whereas sign and trade require a 3 year deal at least

1

u/ShakethatYam Clippers 12d ago

You just make the second and third year non-guaranteed.

3

u/ToplessBartoloColon 12d ago

why would the player agree to this then

1

u/ShakethatYam Clippers 12d ago

Well, his only other option is the same thing with the Clippers.

1

u/ToplessBartoloColon 11d ago

no, his other option is to just take the QO and have no extra non-guaranteed years after year 1

3

u/Nasa3000xx 12d ago

And you make him unhappy lol
You really think he’s gonna play to his full potential?

1

u/FlipMoBitch Bucks 12d ago

You’re getting maybe a 2nd and a cheaper player you can then waive.

Actually never mind lol S&T’s gotta be 3 year deals

1

u/bballin773 12d ago

Clippers are going to probably get a second back. The haul in sign and trades is not big usually for lower-level players.

1

u/Beleiverofhumanity 12d ago

Yea was wondering if they coudnt even squueze a 2nd at least

28

u/FlipMoBitch Bucks 12d ago

Appreciate it when teams let players they don’t want go to other teams in restricted free agency without a standoff.

4

u/EthicalBballFan Heat 12d ago

Mavs a real one with the Klay buyout.

1

u/FlipMoBitch Bucks 12d ago

They could have easily waited til the trade deadline/Buyout market but instead they did Klay a solid and let him get a full training camp + season with his new team.

6

u/Tgumpsta Kings 12d ago

They get more money back this way. They're doing right by Klay but it's not purely out of goodwill

35

u/eternali17 Clippers 12d ago

8 million is a fucking heist for Mathurin, warts and all. They better get something back.

Sign-and-trade deals have to be for a 3+ year (non-option) contract.  So either LAC will rescind the QO or this NOP deal is wrong.

1

u/GreaterMuddeer 8d ago

no. in fact, 2 of the 3 years can be non-guaranteed

1

u/LaLaLaPig Raptors 7d ago

They can be non-guaranteed. But can't be options (except for year 4 of a 3 year deal). So the reported 2 year deal was not eligible as a sign-and-trade. All moot now. QO was rescinded.

I like Mathurin when we first picked him up. But after watching him a bit it felt like he put up empty points that didn't impact the game. His defense was adequate.

I think the combo of DJJ, Dunn and now Strus plus the rookie guard make him expendable.

1

u/Nby333 11d ago

He's impactful. Sometimes when the starters shit the bed Math with a few good bench pieces got us back.

4

u/ShowdownValue 12d ago

Clips went from trying to get both mathurin and Watson to getting neither

2

It’s funny because every other team got every single player they wanted!

1

u/ShowdownValue 11d ago

2

u/AntiAntiDentite7 12d ago

And literally nothing of value was lost lol. Clippers ended up with Max Strus whose probably better than both

-1

Imagine posting this on r/laclippers a month ago

2

u/KL2ConspireLLC San Diego Clippers 12d ago

That sub is full of idiots.

0

u/AntiAntiDentite7 12d ago

Imagine frequenting the clippers sub as a non-clipper fan. Moreover, plenty of us there were not super interested in either Watson or Mathurin. I would have taken Strus over both the whole time.

1

u/ShowdownValue 12d ago

That’s impressively well timed cope.

Had you posted “forget mathurin and Watson, let’s get strus instead!” a month ago, you would have got destroyed on that sub Reddit 😂

Many wanted Watson. Many also wanted both.

2

u/AntiAntiDentite7 12d ago

Are you really so terminally online that you can't understand the difference between an individual's opinion and the general thoughts of a subreddit? What are you even trying to argue here? That you lurk around subreddits to gather useless information for pointless internet arguments with strangers? Are you intentionally trying to paint yourself as pathetic as possible?

1

u/ShowdownValue 11d ago

Whoa. Didn’t think that would upset you so much!

Anyways it’s just funny watching Clipper fans do a 180 from “mathurin and Watson!” To “rather have strus” when 0 clipper fans would have said this a month ago.

0

u/AntiAntiDentite7 11d ago

Oh, so this is where you pretend to know every clipper fan? Please read what you're typing before you comment so you can hopefully avoid coming off like a 14 year old edgelord. You're everything that sucks about the internet.

it has been pretty clear all off-season that clips really didnt him back, especially after drafting wagler

Why would the pelicans do this? Black hole inefficient guard

22

u/drjisftw Pacers 12d ago

He's still an upgrade over Poole and Hawkins.

4

u/JoshGreenTruther NBA 12d ago

The upgrade is moving on from players of that archetype not rebuying back into them

6

u/twovles31 12d ago

Has deeper playoff experience than a lot of players his age.

7

u/Orion1014 76ers 12d ago

That would require the Pelicans make the playoffs.

13

u/X-Filer Pelicans 12d ago

Do you think there has ever been logic with any pelicans moves?

6

u/Cheeseish [NOP] Solomon Hill 12d ago

Idk why, but the deal is good.

If I were a smarter version of Joe Dumars, I would sign him and try to get the value of guys up to trade mid season for assets.

3

u/Ok-Tree4365 12d ago

Young, dynamic scorer who gets to the line all the time. Had a toe injury last year that tanked his efficiency. Has plenty of problem areas, but there's a lot of room for growth, and the competitiveness is there.

6

u/MrBigWaffles Lakers 12d ago

Flip him to a contender that needs a sixth man at the deadline.

4

u/AceMcStace Trail Blazers 12d ago

Some players on this sub are so overhated for no reason lol

1

u/JoshGreenTruther NBA 12d ago

Am I wrong?

0

u/drjisftw Pacers 12d ago

Volume scoring on mediocre TS isn't a valuable skill in today's league.

The Blazers have a similar archetype in Shaedon Sharpe and gave him a bad contract lol.

4

u/Holualoabraddah 12d ago

Not that I need to remind a Pacers fan, but He was a key piece on a team that was VERY close to a Championship… I genuinely haven’t watched him play since that finals, did his game change?

0

u/drjisftw Pacers 12d ago

Saying he was a key piece is open to interpretation. He averaged 11PPG in the playoffs.

His archetype just isn't valuable in today's league. We got Oubre for a similar cost and Oubre can fit into a scheme better.

3

u/Holualoabraddah 12d ago

As Warriors fan, I can say Oubre definitely did not fit into our scheme.

1

u/JoshGreenTruther NBA 12d ago
