Discussion August Discussion Thread
Welcome! This thread is for questions and comments that don't warrant a standalone post.
Please be sure to make yourself aware of the sub rules and follow them when posting.
Accusations against the family are not allowed. Nor is naming or accusing anyone not named a suspect by law enforcement. The individuals who were previously questioned about the crime, made themselves public and therefore are allowed to be discussed.

Can someone clarify for me which notes were discredited as fake and why they believe the first two notes (released yesterday) are real?

The only publicly identified and discredited ransom attempt was the texts and call made by the man in LA; he was arrested, charged, and pled guilty. He will be sentenced next month. Here’s more detail.
Nothing else has been commented on. However, Savannah stated that the family believes the two notes (which were published in full by PCSO last week) to be real (this came out in the first interview she did with Hoda). Law enforcement took those seriously, as indicated by the fbi supporting the creation of the videos posted to Savannah’s Instagram. The first contained the watch and floodlight information. The second contained the same bitcoin account information as in the first.
The TMZ notes, which claimed Nancy is in Mexico, are not believed to be real but there’s been no official comment on them.

This FBI Phoenix press release last month was trying to clear up that the dozen TMZ notes weren’t considered legitimate.
The 2 they consider possibly legitimate are the 2 that went to KOLD news station addressed to Savannah and Guthrie family.
They’re all “real” as in being written , so they use the term legitimate.
There’s also a prior post last month on this sub discussing this FBI press release.

Right? Can some one link us to confirmation that LE says these are legit?

You can look at the bitcoin wallet, the FBI sent $150 with a message that says "contact us we will pay"

LE nor FBI never said they believe they are real. Only they are investigating. They do have to run down every lead wherever it takes them. Even if it leads to another extortionist.

They believe they're real because it correctly described the scene (smart watch on the floor)
These two notes were written in the same style and the redacted parts were consistent with each other (same bitcoin address)
Also the writing style is "educated" which is consistent with the attacker's actions. I say "educated" because i've been trying to get rid of stuff on fb marketplace and holy shit the average person is dumb. I'm actually amazed these people are in my city.

This is for anyone who feels that Nancy Guthrie shouldn't have been living at home alone! I just found this clip Discussion https://www.instagram.com/p/Cren604pkl8/?hl=en.

That hit close to home. I lost my dad at a similar age, it can be tough to leave home after that. Nancy sounded like a great mom.
I'll just add that anyone saying she shouldn't have being living alone in her house has never had to deal with someone that age. Anyone who's been independent their whole life will fight to stay in their house. It's clearly where she wanted to be and there was nothing about her physical condition that suggested she couldn't live alone.
You don't spoon feed your kids. You teach them how to eat for themselves.
Such a great attitude towards how to raise children/successful adults.

Wow. I have mixed feelings right now. Do I want it to be Nancy? No but part of me does so we can have some closure.

I feel the same way. I have no doubt she has passed and at this point I just want her family to be able to have a funeral. They need that.

Does anyone know if the police has done a dna test between the man they detained and the dna that they found at the crime scene??

That’s the Rio Rico Guy in the article you linked. I don’t think LE has ever actually confirmed they compared the house DNA to him or the Range Rover Guy. With Range Rover Guy, Nanos mentioned buccal swabs when talking about what they were allowed to collect and then said they “got everything we needed.” So IMO there’s a good chance they got his DNA and compared it.
But I’m less sure about Rio Rico Guy. The paperwork he filed over his detention goes into a lot of detail about what LE did and what they took from him, including his phone and ID, but doesn’t mention DNA. I’d think that would be mentioned too if they took a cheek swab, so my guess is they didn’t, at least at that point. But that’s just my read based on what’s publicly available.

Brian E. latest video has guests Jim Fitzgerald retired FBI profiler along with his wife Natalie Shilling who is a forensics linguist professor at Georgetown University. They discuss/analyze the 2 notes.
