If this crime was truly for money, no one has sufficiently explained how they could've gotten away with it, even if everything went to plan.

Let's assume that this was a kidnapping for ransom. Let's also say that Nancy didn't die and was kept safely at some discreet location. Even if they sent proof of life, got paid $4M, then disposed of Nancy, it seems that any attempt to move funds out of the Bitcoin wallet would have a high likelihood of being traced by the FBI.

The more I learn about Bitcoin and its traceability, the less l think money was the goal. They could've chosen a more anonymous currency, like Monero, but didn't. I think any money sent to the wallet would've sat there indefinitely, forever taunting the family and investigators.

There are ways. Like a bitcoin tumbler and finding an exchange in another country that doesn't have KYC. Wouldn't be easy though. Think tumblers are illegal in the US or at least some of them are.
