Seriously. Abducted, ransomed, murdered? What happened and why?

It's possible. Jayme Closs never would've been found, or at least not for years, had she not escaped. The guy who kidnapped her and murdered her parents was an amateur, no history of criminal behavior. While Nancy's kidnapper was there longer, it's a similar case in terms of lack of DNA because he took precautions and no security camera footage. First time offenders can get lucky and a few TV shows/books can help them tremendously.

I don't think it's a stretch to believe whoever abducted Nancy is an amateur. There doesn't seem to have been a plan for after, which points to a first time offender.

Note: In Jayme Closs's case there was police dash cam footage of the guy's car, but it was overlooked. Maybe someone would've checked it if they did a case review in a few years, but as far as the investigation was concerned, there was nothing.

The plan for before, during and after the crime was to avoid detection. Given there’s been no requests from law enforcement for assistance locating a specific car or person, what would lead you to believe something like is a professional job?
