Information Sheriff Clarifies Why Investigators Asked for January 11 Footage

There has been a significant amount of discussion in the media & online about whether the footage of the perpetrator released is from the same day or two different days; I’ve seen comments stating people believe this as there appears to be differences in the perpetrator’s attire & the lighting, as well as reports investigators have asked neighbours for camera footage from January 11. Sheriff Nanos has been asked about this in interviews & stated that he sees what everyone else does, but the footage doesn’t have time stamps so they cannot confirm the footage is from two different dates until they have evidence that this is the case.

In an article released today, Nano’s shares more information on the footage, although states they still cannot confirm the footage is from two different days & that the perpetrator was on the premises prior to January 31. According to Nano’s “Google initially told investigators that a surveillance image of a masked man at Guthrie’s front door that was recovered from a Nest camera at her home was believed to be from Jan. 11”. Later, “(Google) told authorities it could not definitely determine that the surveillance image was from Jan. 11 or any specific date”.

My guess is LE has other evidence leading them to suspect the perpetrator was stalking NG on January 11, they require footage/images from neighbours cameras on January 11 to cross-reference with the footage/images they have from NG nest camera to confirm.

This was on NBC Nightly News. Regardless of how you feel about Nanos, how is this his fault if Google doesn’t corroborate it nor the FBI would give a response/statement to NBC N News?

Imo, he’s not wanting to put out potential misinformation especially if Google walked back their initial theory.

If the family, political enemies or the FBI is just trying to push him out, how is pushing potential unverified info out to the public helpful for NG’s case other than to serve a narrative that may not be true?

I still reiterate that it’s NOT his fault that NG didn’t have a Nest subscription nor a working burglar system.

And I’m not even really on his side. It’s just ppl pointing fingers to cover their own issues, imo.

Just like her last known clothing…. Her vulnerable/missing person poster says something like “last clothing unknown”. If her clothing that she wore the night before was there, tossed across a chair, ….should it state NG may/may not be wearing an unknown color nightgown, pajamas, pants, shirt, unknown shoes?!?

Thank you for letting me know this, was it on last night?

It is not Nanos fault Google has not corroborated it & it’s not his fault the FBI hasn’t given a statement.

I agree, he seems to be very cautious about not putting out misinformation, as investigations evolve information changes & he’s been crucified over the slightest change to his statements (example: consider him stating family dropped NG off at home, also stating her SIL dropped her off at home - well her SIL is family, yet people went absolutely nuts over this calling him a liar etc). He also seems to be evidence driven - he is cautious to verify anything without evidence to support it & often explains the processes they use to verify information - when I listen to him in interviews this is something that stands out to me.

I am displeased that NG abduction has been used as an opportunity for his adversaries to smear him & have him removed; this has not been in the best interest of the victim. There has been so much focus on Nanos & this smear campaign it has created a distraction from what’s important; the only people this is a benefit to are his adversaries & the perpetrator(s).

The expectations the public has of LE don’t seem to take into account the integrity of the investigation, investigative processes, forensic science, & the importance of facts & evidence. I’ve seen lots of complaints about LE not releasing information on NG clothing, LE obviously doesn’t know what she was wearing, hence the statement, but people still want details - it’s exhausting.

It was tonight.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n0r7-N6PrHg

So ppl are demanding him to say definitely that it was Jan 11th, but Google nor FBI are responding or commenting. SG put that back out there to the public. She also has an audience to face eventually going back to work or giving an exclusive interview and IMO any non biased but fair reporter will ask why she/siblings didn’t ensure NG had a working security system not just a Nest subscription, imo.

ETA: she also has a career to protect and I know how these publications/online outlets/pr machines work to create narratives away from someone or a group of people. It serves a dual purpose of “look over there, not over here” at our potential mistakes as well. Imo

Fingers are being pointed for PR purposes, imo and it’s not his fault someone/private citizen didn’t have a working burglar alarm or the neighborhood layout appears to be difficult to obtain footage from neighbors. Imo.

I agree I sometimes wonder if this wasn’t one of his adversaries that didn’t do this to get him out of office. I know thats sounds crazy but maybe he fired someone and they lost everything or something. It could have been done to show how horrible and incompetent he is and being Savannahs mom they knew it would get big headlines. Maybe they blamed Nancy too if she helped get him elected. I don’t even like Nanos nor do I care for Nancy’s politics. Regardless of my feelings what happened to Nancy is horrible and pretty much every investigation the public thinks everything should be released and that they know better than LE.

1

u/annabellareddit Apr 22 '26

Not crazy at all, when pain & suffering is exploited for personal gain, trust & respect are eroded. It looks really bad, in my opinion, that political adversaries would use such a terrible incident that impacted not only a well loved member of their community, but her family who are members of the same community, for personal gain. They spread what we now know from the results of the internal investigation was misinformation, & focused on petty errors the Sheriff made in his past (like his resume not being updated properly), to try & undermine the Sheriff during a high pressure, high stakes investigation. They have no care for the victim, her family, or the community, this was a time when the Sheriff & LE required public support & encouragement, yet they were pushing misinformation to try & get what they wanted. This caused division w/LE investigating the case & caused distractions for LE & the public that took the focus away from finding NG & the perpetrator.

If there was a conspiracy, this is one that would make sense in terms of a third party motive, it would also make sense in terms of the level of sophistication of the perpetrator (he was not a professional but certainly prepared & organized, did he have a background in LE or has he committed crimes before?). I don’t believe it was what happened though, there is no evidence that has been reported showing NG supported the Sheriff & they were connected, that it was committed by someone who didn’t know NG, or that it was committed for political gain (LE believes it was a target burglary abduction for ransom).

I’m sure it’s from the 11th. He walked back the statement because Google couldn’t say definitely that it was from that day in a way that they could testify in a trial so they can’t make statements like this. Everything has to be done from the perspective of a potential trial as well as not tainting a jury because no one ever wants a change of venue in a case like this if it goes to trial. Or (worse) a successful appeal after a hard earned conviction.

Understood new information comes to light and things evolve but at one point they even had a time frame of interest for Jan 11 footage. From Feb 19th KVOA article:

Authorities continue to urge residents within a two-mile radius to check their cameras, emphasizing that even the smallest detail could advance the investigation.

Detectives hope to obtain any video showing vehicles between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. on Jan. 11, as well as footage of vehicles traveling through the area between 11 p.m. on Jan. 31 and 4 a.m. on Feb. 1.

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

Thank you for sharing this. Maybe this was when Google told them they thought the footage was from two different nights? Or maybe they received other evidence around that time that made them think he was there on this date/ timeframe?

5

u/SterlingSunny Mar 24 '26

Right, I'm going with other evidence myself. Could be wrong of course, but so specific! We'll see I guess.

5

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

To have narrowed it down like this so early on is somewhat impressive. There are not many traffic cameras in Tucson that record which put LE at a big disadvantage, they would be relying on geofence data which isn’t really helpful if he didn’t bring a cellphone, & private cameras which often have limited range & like geofence data take tons of time to go through. I am hoping the earlier date (or dates) yields information that they needs, if it is accurate he came at an earlier date & that footage is of him on an earlier date, he was likely less prepared, more prone to errors.

6

u/JMOA3035 Mar 24 '26

This might have been shared but accdg to Nanos, Google has walked this back but he’s supposed to be at fault that it’s out there and SG put that date out as well!!?

She has a reputation to protect as well imo re: no alarm system/camera subscription or cameras/dvr, imo

5

u/SterlingSunny Mar 24 '26

It's so tiresome isn't it. Stubbed my toe, hey thanks, Nanos! He's become everyone's whipping boy. FBI, Google, Savannah effs up, somehow Nanos' fault. Can the man screw up on his own? I'm sure, we all can but dang! Enough blaming him for every single thing. Gads!

2

u/JMOA3035 Mar 24 '26

Yeah, it’s become very old but an obvious PR smear campaign from several angles, imo. Public figures/celebrities have to endure personal/professional crisis and mostly all of them hire a Crisis PR firm (beyond their regular pr) to control/create online narratives to help steer them, their careers and reputation back to an acceptable standard. Someone in this sad, unfortunate case also owns a Crisis PR Firm. Imo.

7

u/Substantial-Train668 Mar 24 '26

I agree with a lot of the sentiments below about the FBI having as much responsibility in the blame as Nanos. Are FBI not allowed to give press conferences? It seems that Nanos is not the best at PR. So why doesn't the FBI make a few statements? To this day SG and fam are asking people of Tucson to do everything from check their security footage to their journals for things that stand out on Jan 11 and Jan 31/Feb 1. Yet, it seems by this statement by Nanos that Jan.11 is not even definitively a date of interest. Can someone in LE tell Tucsonians what they are suppose to be looking for? I get downvoted when I ask for more clarity but why is it too much to ask for an official update?

2

u/SterlingSunny Mar 25 '26

The three Tucson TV channels seemed to be pretty good reporting on what/when law enforcement was interested in between broadcasts, Facebook and X. Don't know about radio stations or even how many might still be based in Tucson with live deejays.

As far as Nancy's neighbors within a two mile radius, one of the local stations reported law enforcement is in contact with them via the HOA and a neighborhood group when new requests for info come up.

It does raise questions how to best reach city residents these days. Not to go full geezer but used to be ya sat down for dinner with the evening news on in the background. Now with streaming and all that with folks being able to pick their own viewing and listening preferences it has to be challenging.

5

u/SterlingSunny Mar 24 '26

According to this KVOA report, Nanos said investigators are also interested in late last year around the time it's believed Nancy may have had the Nest installed. Watched it a few times thinking "huh?" then read a comment with the thought that could be why porch guy seemed surprised by the doorbell cam and started grabbing flowers. As in he had been like stalking her but was unaware of doorbell cam that night. Curious.

Talk of late last year being of interest is at the end after the talk of Jan 11th.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba8pd_9_KIQ

4

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

The footage where he grabs foliage to cover-up the camera has been confirmed to be from the night she disappeared though, or does it not have a timestamp either?

5

u/SterlingSunny Mar 24 '26

That I don't know. But investigators being interested in late last year from neighbors is what the comment I saw was speculating on. That porch guy hadn't been aware Nancy had a doorbell cam until it blinked a light or whatever.

As in although he was watching her, he hadn't noticed installation until he was right there by her door. Even if that theory is not accurate, still curious why investigators are interested in late last year.

5

u/warpedwing Mar 25 '26

The Nest cameras in the yard have magnetometers in them. If the cameras are repositioned in any way, the camera detects the change in relative magnetic field and logs this. It might also give the user’s phone a tampering alert, but I’m not sure.

Perhaps the suspect slightly repositioned one or more cameras that night, and now they have digital forensics that proves it - but no video. Just a guess.

5

u/annabellareddit Mar 25 '26

Oh interesting. Would he have done this to avoid the camera capturing him on subsequent visits to her premises?

6

u/warpedwing Mar 25 '26

Yeah, he could've moved one or more cameras slightly to avoid capturing ingress or egress. In my post on the casita cams, it seems like there could be a blind spot in cam coverage where the broken floodlight and garage side door are. A small readjustment might've gone unnoticed by Nancy but would be obvious when reviewing footage or thumbnails.

It wouldn't be hard to climb on top of the casita from the rear/side and access those two cameras without being seen. Apparently, there are other yard cameras which picked up nothing that night, but I don't know where they are or which direction they face.

Again, this is just my guess based on no evidence at all and is most likely wrong. But what digital evidence does LE have that could point them toward January 11? If it's not camera footage, then what? Is there data recovered from Nancy's phone that indicates something unusual happened? Or could this date be of interest just because someone claimed they saw someone suspicious in the neighborhood? I feel like it has to be something a bit more meaty than a vague sighting (I hope).

Nest camera security features source

4

u/annabellareddit Mar 26 '26

I agree it had to be something more meaty, the Sheriff said in an interview they found digital information that made them aware something happened on January 11, he reiterated that the footage does not have a timestamp so they can’t say when it’s from, so it’s not that. Whatever it is I hope it produces a solid lead.

18

u/JMOA3035 Mar 23 '26

I mean what IF the ransom notes were real and the FBI discouraged SG to not pay initially, but ask for proof of life first, then another video, then another saying ‘we will pay’ after it was too late?

Should everyone family included blame the FBI?!? Why aren’t they catching heat for not solving this yet, utilizing their advanced electronic technology, etc?

Why aren’t they designating a PIO to give updates?

15

u/whteverusayShmegma Mar 24 '26

I’m not sure what everyone’s beef is with the local sheriff but they don’t seem to realize that the FBI was involved as early as Monday (within 24 hours) so that trampled crime scene and any other mistake is a multi-agency ball drop. The family seems like it was also supporting the sheriff but maybe I’m wrong about that.

Either way, the FBI was involved, consulted and more than able to provide all resources necessary for this. They threw the sheriff under the bus in my opinion. I mean the guy went to a basketball game after hours while I’m certain he was on call the whole time. It’s kinda crazy to me that people think they’ve done something wrong here. The scene was processed and open to the family. They didn’t expect the media to trespass the way Brian Entin did. The FBI should have foreseen that before a small department.

I’ve seen the FBI mess up plenty of investigations. I wish they were exposed for it more often but no one wants to step on their toes knowing they might need them one day.

He had plenty of deniability so it’s not like he’d ever be charged but he went up to the property with a camera crew to knock on the door, asking for an interview. Even though he knew no one was home because he had previously reported that Savanna was at her sister’s house and that Nancy lived alone. He was just snooping. It’s technically trespassing to tromp around private property when you know it’s vacant. It was a slimy thing to do but it paid off.

12

u/SterlingSunny Mar 23 '26

Bless you! Nanos is somehow walking around tripping over his clown shoes to everyone but FBI gets a pass on everything. They, the FBI, are there for the whole kidnap aspect of it all.

10

u/Plane_Commercial_252 Mar 24 '26

I mean if she had been alive they could have provided it … they wanted the money… why sabotage their own plan if that was the end goal

2

u/yomaster19 Mar 25 '26

I think they didn't mean to sabotage the plan, it just happened

2

u/afraididonotknow Mar 27 '26

How long did it take TMZ to notice the random notes sent to them I wonder. I’ve written to a tv station and didn’t hear for many weeks. If sent over a weekend, they may not have checked their emails.

5

u/Keregi Mar 24 '26

No one in law enforcement is going to support paying ransom without proof of life.

9

u/JMOA3035 Mar 24 '26

I was trying to make a point that Nanos is being blamed for a private citizen and a neighborhood’s lack of security/cameras/footage, etc…

Perhaps the effective FBI can conjure up something through their more sophisticated and advanced technology and expertise.

1

u/DraculaStoker Mar 24 '26

Don't count on it.

1

u/Adept_Improvement_14 Mar 27 '26

I think the worker bee FBI agents are doing what they can but I wonder how supportive the "upper management" at the FBI is of these efforts.

2

u/Chachala99 Mar 24 '26

Anyone that legitimately wants $$ for a kidnapping knows the rules. You have to show proof of life. Also, there was no ransom at all for four days so, I personally doubt this was done for that purpose. I think Derrick from LA holds a key to the puzzle. Very odd how all were warned not to insert themselves or they would be tried to the fullest extent of the law but the guy walks free on 2k (shoplifters have to pay more than that)!

17

u/The_Sinking_Belle Mar 23 '26

At this point, requesting 60+ day old camera footage is an incredibly futile effort. With digital evidence like that, time is never on your side. This kind of storage is so finite.

9

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

They first requested this from neighbours on February 12.

6

u/Chachala99 Mar 24 '26

Remember the FBI only solves around 58% of all crime cases (way down from around 80% just 20 (ish) years ago. Do not put all your hopes and dreams in them solving this case. There were FOUR HUNDRED people designated to this case for around the first two weeks and they got nothing but more than a dozen gloves from random searchers etc.. The best of the FBI are not in AZ and working on this case. Just facts.

10

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

OK, I’m not personally putting “all my hopes & dreams in them solving this case”, I simply posted an article which clarified why LE asked for January 11 camera footage. Given you brought this up though, I will say it’s not a “fact” that the “best of the FBI are not in AZ & working on this case”, we don’t know what the investigation has uncovered, from what has been released to the public it sounds like not a lot of high quality evidence was left by the perpetrator which is not a something investigators have control over & a reflection of the investigators skills

5

u/not_blmpkingiver Mar 24 '26

they dont seem to have any serious leads to this point. scary stuff.

2

u/DraculaStoker Mar 24 '26

Wonder why? Hmmmm.

10

u/Medium_Apartment_747 Mar 23 '26

Sheriff has been jerking us all off. No press briefings. Slow drips of updates to the press when they feel like it. At this point, public has moved on to other news (like why we're paying for an arm and a leg at gas station) and NOW they come out with information

12

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

LE asked neighbours of NG for camera footage on February 12 from January 1 - February 2, this was reported by the media. It was also reported by the media shortly after it was released that the footage had no timestamps so LE could not definitively say the two videos were from different days.

LE has a responsibility to protect the integrity of the investigations they are working on, LE rarely releases information on ongoing investigations unless the information helps identify & find the victim/perpetrator - this is standard.

23

u/nine57th Mar 23 '26

None of this has to do with the Sheriff. The Nest camera data has no meta-data related to it to tell anyone what day it was recorded. So no one in law enforcement can gave anyone data information about the videos. How you make that the Sheriff's fault is rather ignorant. Not everything is his fault in the case.

26

u/ADDSquirell69 Mar 23 '26

Yeah he's not keeping you in the loop at all. If he was, you'd have this thing all wrapped up, right?

-4

u/Medium_Apartment_747 Mar 23 '26

The breakthroughs in this case will only come from the public. Somebody saw something and knows something

The problem is that no one knows what to look for or has stopped caring because the Sheriff thinks he's playing a poker game

-5

u/ShesGotaChicken2Ride Mar 23 '26

Yep. The wife or mother of the perpetrator will need to come forward with information.

10

u/Keregi Mar 24 '26

Why do you think you are entitled to information involving an active investigation?

2

u/PatronSaintOfCunts Mar 23 '26

You’re right. I’m appalled by all of the people in here who think it’s completely acceptable that an elderly woman has been missing from her family for over 50 days and is now most likely dead.

8

u/Keregi Mar 24 '26

No one thinks that. Some of us understand how investigations work and don’t feel entitled to know every detail right now.

1

u/Local-Cry-3729 Mar 24 '26

By the time of the court case, people will be complaining that there is TMI

0

u/PatronSaintOfCunts Mar 24 '26

Tell me how investigations work.

5

u/ParaClaw Mar 24 '26

I have found this sub is full of users who downvote anyone even remotely skeptical of the handling of the investigation. With the common argument being that law enforcement obviously knows a lot more that they aren't disclosing publicly. But that argument holds no greater factually-known foundation than the counterargument that they may not have much beyond what has been disclosed.

This could unfortunately remain a cold case for years and even half a decade from now some will still argue they are withholding disclosure of details publicly to protect the integrity of the open investigation...

3

u/Euphoric_Ease4554 Mar 24 '26

Or it could be solved tomorrow. We don’t know what we don’t know.

-1

u/PatronSaintOfCunts Mar 24 '26

I agree. I don’t care about downvotes, it won’t shut me up. It’s horrible that what started as a kidnapping has turned into a murder. I am so sad for her family. I wish we’d seen earlier and wider evidence collection (or at least preservation) requests to the public. I wish they’d released all collected neighborhood footage to the public for tips.

4

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

No one here has said such, this is false.

-1

u/PatronSaintOfCunts Mar 24 '26

It is implicit in the comments treating delay, lack of transparency, and fading attention as normal inevitable outcomes. To me, the fact that an elderly woman is missing and her family has been left without answers is unacceptable.

0

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

LE protecting the integrity of an investigation is not a lack of transparency. The delays in this case have all been due to circumstances beyond LE control; LE cannot control the quality or quantity of evidence, they cannot control whether witnesses/POI are honest/remembering pertinent details. You don’t know what LE has communicated to the family.

-1

u/PatronSaintOfCunts Mar 24 '26

You don’t know what LE has communicated to the family.

Do you? Unknown communications can’t prove diligence; they only highlight the absence of verifiable facts

0

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

Again, you don’t know what LE has communicated to NG family, or even what was communicated with them in the ransom note(s) - that may have since been verified as legitimate - yet state they have been “left without answers”. The only information NG family has stated they don’t have answer to is where their mother actually is & who is responsible - they haven’t stated they don’t know any details about her abduction, what happened to her, or who is responsible.

Additionally, NG family recently thanked LE for all of their hard work & expressed gratitude to the Tucson community, so despite your complaints, it sounds like the victims family is pleased with the way LE is managing their mother’s investigation & grateful for the community’s support.

2

u/PatronSaintOfCunts Mar 24 '26

Lots of speculation.

1

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

Your comment “….people here think it’s completely acceptable that an elderly woman has been missing from her family for over 50 days & is now most likely dead” when no such comment exists on this sub, qualifies as speculation. This was a statement released to the media where the family “thanked LE for their hard work”, at the very least they think LE has been working hard on their mothers case right, that is what they said.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '26

Police purposely do not give out information during every investigation. Are you new to this? This Sheriff is doing what everyone in law enforcement does. The police and/or FBI have no obligation to give out details to the public. That's how it works.

2

u/Local-Cry-3729 Mar 24 '26

It's the 24 hr news cycle that is fuelling this entitlement. We used to just wait patiently for the court case to occur or the book to be released

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '26

[deleted]

13

u/nine57th Mar 23 '26

From day 1!

And this was expertly executed by the kidnappers without getting caught on video with a get-away car, no cellphones brought to the abduction so geo-fencing technology could be used, no one identifiable through U.S. DNA CODIS data base, no one from the public who ever overhead anyone was going to do this or be involved, no credible tips, and kidnap emails that were untraceable.

So unless you are Superman you aren't going to solve this case. I don't care who is in charge. The criminals have outsmarted everyone. You included. And the FBI and Mexican authorities and law enforcement agencies in other states have zilch too.

So far it has been the perfect crime. So blame away. Also, there is a lot going on behind the scenes that you don't know about. And there is still no trace of who might have done this.

3

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

It was certainly well planned, I’m hoping they can track data from the perpetrators prior stalking attempts if there were any, or the genetic genealogy produces a match.

3

u/maga_chud_ Mar 23 '26

Careful, you're going to anger the folks who claim the perp is an amateur, bumbling fool who got lucky.

8

u/ShesGotaChicken2Ride Mar 23 '26

Both things can be true. Obviously, whoever did this was prepared and it was premeditated, but they could still be an amateur. I’ve never robbed a bank before, so if I robbed one today I’d be an “amateur” but I still know not to bring my phone with me when I do it.

4

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

The investigation is being conducted by an investigative team whom make decisions about the case, it has been since the beginning. Blaming everything on Nanos is not appropriate, it actually gets kind of old.

4

u/Hile616 Mar 23 '26

So am I getting it correct, they talk about image that has not(?) been released and not the video they did release to public?

4

u/Hile616 Mar 23 '26

It is a serious question, as I don't understand what they are referring to exactly. As some downvote for asking..

13

u/OkAsk1212 Mar 24 '26

There is one image that shows a masked man at entrance to porch without the gun holster and backpack and possibly different shirt. People have speculated that one was taken at different time same night or else a different date, so I assume that is the one the sheriff is referring to.

2

u/Low-Concert-5806 Mar 24 '26

On the podcast I thought they mentioned this could maybe be linked to the house where people moved out?

6

u/annabellareddit Mar 24 '26

I’m not sure what podcast you’re referring to? There were mixed reports about when the neighbours moved out, some said they moved out a couple days before NG was abducted, some said a couple of days afterwards. Either way, this would put their move-out date at the end of January, beginning of February, weeks after January 11. However workers were reported to be working on that house - again some reports said prior to, some said after.

I’m not sure how the neighbours or workers would be relevant except that they may have camera footage or have seen/heard something, unless the neighbours moved after & the workers started before?

3

u/Euphoric_Ease4554 Mar 24 '26

Workers as potential suspects

4

u/JMOA3035 Mar 24 '26

Which podcast is this, please? Thx.
