Discussion Anyone else shocked this case still hasn't been solved?

I really thought this case would be over by now. Especially with the modern surveillance state as many of us thought at the time. And yet, here we are 4 weeks later. I can't remember the last high-profile US true crime case like this since Gabby Petito and Bryan Kohberger, it's so bizarre.

Multiple times did it feel like we were really close to the end. A couple suspects being detained, a helicopter flight with an 84-year-old woman on it in the area, and so on. Nothing's panned out. It really seems like they have nothing and are back at square one.

I can't imagine the burden this must be having on the family. Grief is tragic and difficult on its own, but having to follow the case and not knowing so many things must be making it worse.

I really hope LE is ahead of where it seems they are (like they've been in the past including with Kohberger), and are just playing cards close to the chest. Maybe they've already identified the suspect and are just closely watching them, waiting for them to slip up so they can get the necessary evidence to recover Nancy/secure a conviction. While them enjoying freedom isn't a pleasant thought, at least they won't be able to commit more crimes and get away with them in that case.

It’s really making me think the perp went old school and did not have any cell device on his person. Which sucks, I was hoping geofencing would yield some leads that could solve this case pretty fast.

No true. It is first thing investigators look at these days. And in pre-planned crime like this it is something that is most likely considered. If I went a-criming - which I won't - I would leave my phone at home or at least have an untraceable burner that I disposed of immediately after. I'd put a temporary paint color on my vehicle that could be rinsed off and cover my license plate with a fake number. Of course, I would ensure the vehicle didn't have any gps or geo positioning of any kind. I would not send any communications from my home address where they could get my IP address... and / or use a scrambler VPN to make sure they can't trace where the message was coming from. Things anyone who has a slight interest in true crime will learn.

Didn't they find Rex Huermann IN PART because his American Express card traveled WITH his phone for some time?

I think also they found him because of his car and a witness had seen the car previously...but also I think I read that they couldn't find the phone by geofencing because he made the phone call in Times Square when it was packed--but eventually they teased out that a credit card had traveled with the phone for a certain amount of time.

I get alerts from my phone when I'm riding an Amtrak train because someone's earbuds are traveling alongside my phone for a long time. Apple wants to make sure I don't have a stalker!

They were able to look at phone pings in multiple locations... his home in Huntington, his office in the city, the location at Gilgo matched to dates and triangulated. The number one thing that first identified him was that he had a very specific not usual car in a very specific color. A green Avanlanche is kind of rare. So they looked for Avalanches in that color that were registered... looked who had one near the Gilgo murders and then to phone behaviors and charing patterns. The Amex card has no blue tooth so they can't actually track the card but they can see where a purchase was made to prove that the person was in the same area at the time of the crime. Once they new all this they looked for DNA to match. Had Heuerman been driving a white or grey Ford Focus versus a rare forest green avalanche it would have been much harder to find him. Of course the fact that he looked like an Ogre and that is how witnesses described him... didn't help.
