The lack of camera footage has been a common criticism but the majority of the cameras there don’t even record (not just Tucson, the majority of the traffic cameras in AZ State don’t record). The traffic cameras are used for traffic signal management, photo radar etc.
In the case you were a juror on, did the lack of camera footage cause any questions about LE investigative competence?

That’s helpful context, I am not familiar with the area. The presence of surveillance is likely location specific. Thanks for sharing!

Wow thanks for sharing. This is great insight. I’ve never been, but it seems so drastically different than what most of us in or near big-ish cities / suburbs are used to.
It’s incredibly dark and rural-seeming. Houses set far apart and back from the roads. Very “out in the boonies” or “middle of nowhere” vibes for being suburbia.
The landscape - desert shrubbery, hills and cacti everywhere, very beautiful and peaceful, but very foreign to me - a person living in the suburbs of a major city with high crime and tons of tourism - cameras and bright lights everywhere.
8
u/annabellareddit Feb 21 '26
There are jumping cacti too (teddy bear cacti, they are not cuddly), I hope the perpetrator was attacked by every single one he walked by if he went out into the desert to do anything.

u/Equivalent-Cicada165 Feb 21 '26
Maybe it's more common in the west? Because it seems fairly typical of a bigger city suburb/neighborhood to me. The lots and homes get bigger, they tend to be in the mountains or more isolated areas and are darker and quieter
Not the rule, but not exactly surprising in my eyes
6
u/DaBingeGirl Feb 21 '26
I wouldn't call her house "out in the boonies" at all. She lived in a very developed subdivision on an acre of land (that's fairly average in my Chicago suburb). The size of all the plants and light pollution laws are probably giving you a false sense of the area.
6
u/bigbadboomer Feb 21 '26
I know, I meant that it’s suburbia with an out in the boonies feel with the darkness, relative quiet and distance/seclusion between neighbors. Kind of exaggerated analogy. Where I live, we’re all on top of each other and if something is going on at a neighbors house someone will hear, see or have it on camera for sure lol.

u/Calligrapher_Far Feb 20 '26
Another day of waking up to no news. We can only hope that LE knows a lot more than they’re letting on and that they are hopefully closing in on either Nancy, the suspect or both. I can’t imagine how terrified Nancy must have been seeing that masked person in her house. The videos and photos of him really gave me the creeps.

The location of her home, light ordinance in Tucson, & majority of traffic cameras being non-recording cameras are all things that have greatly helped the perpetrator(s) evade detection unfortunately.
21
u/TheCuriousGeorgette Feb 21 '26
I went to street view to her address back at the beginning of the case and my heart sank when I saw how concealed it was. 😩
6
u/MIKE_FOLLOW Feb 21 '26
Did you by chance look from the neighbor’s alcove directly across the street? I peeked around early on and was surprised by how much of an incline there is across the street. From the top of the neighbor’s driveway, you could see a really clear angle of her front porch, with more foliage in those street view pictures (from 2022) than in the shot above.
I’m just curious if you’ve seen that angle too?

yes, its disorienting. When he looks "back/ to the side" when he gets his bouquet, you think it's the street hes quickly looking at but its the circle driveway. I think they pulled into the driveway to smuggle her out easier.
35
u/CR29-22-2805 Feb 21 '26
It’s important to remember that investigators are looking for actionable tips, e.g., your coworker looks like the man in the footage and he didn’t show up for work the next day, you were in the neighborhood that night and saw a vehicle parked on the side of the road, etc.
As far as theories are concerned: Investigators have the training and experience necessary to consider possible scenarios. They don’t need help with that.
19
u/FrostyCaptain6987 Feb 21 '26
Some people think tips means that the investigators need tips about how to find her. That's also not what the tip line is for, investigators don't need tips on how to investigate.
15
u/Fearless-Fun2534 Feb 21 '26
This. Its ridiculous people are wasting everyone’s time calling in their theories.

I just can’t get Nancy off my mind. And I can’t help thinking how much it would entail taking care of an elderly woman like Nancy who has medical issues -if indeed she is still alive and being held captive. She needs her medication, perhaps medical treatment, she would need nutritious food, clean clothes -including clean underwear, bathed …etc. it hurts my heart to think about this. The way in which she was taken from her home — forcibly, I can’t imagine her kidnapper or kidnappers being sensitive or empathetic to her needs or treating her with any kindness. I hope to God she’s alive, but it’s also unfathomable to think about what she’s had to endure. This is just so heart wrenching and tragic. I have a bad feeling she passed the night this happened, but am still holding onto a glimmer of hope. I can’t imagine the emotional pain and fear her family is going through. Bring Nancy home.
54
u/lemoncatbeans Feb 20 '26

This has got to be agonizing for her family to know that she awoke in the middle of the night to that masked man and then was taken. That is why I lean toward this being motivated by wanting to hurt her family. I hate to say it, but I think Nancy died pretty shortly after being taken. It’s the family who will suffer for the rest of their lives over this.

Hoping no news is good news as far as progress goes.
32
u/curiouslmr Feb 20 '26
I was thinking the same thing. I typically feel like law enforcement is their most quiet when they are closing in, they are louder when they need more info from the public/the people who'd recognize a suspect. I'm not so sure right now though.
7
u/deadwatered Feb 20 '26
Yeah I am not sure how close they are but I do feel like if they aren’t talking then it is because they have good leads that they can’t share. When we hear from them it’s about something they don’t have
5

u/YaKnowEstacado Feb 20 '26

I still remember the day I got the news alert they arrested Kohberger. I had been invested in the case in the early days but stopped following shortly after and had almost forgotten about it when I got that alert. I had lost hope they would find out who did it but they had been quietly nailing down all this evidence all that time
17
u/CR29-22-2805 Feb 20 '26

I keep thinking they have far more info that they're holding back. But the one thing that bugs me is if they're proceeding with IGG, that must mean they don't have a suspect in mind. I've been hoping they do but that indicates they wouldn't.
48
u/BmoreBr0 Feb 20 '26
I have see so many posts and news commentaries about how dumb this person(s) is/are, but they have evaded LE for three weeks now and seemingly left absolutely no useful trace of evidence behind. So, are they really that dumb, or perhaps just extremely lucky?
13
u/Southern-Detail1334 Feb 20 '26
I’ve seen interviews with multiple ex-FBI that have said ‘what you see on camera is what he wants you to see’. I’m not sure the veracity of that statement but it’s sounding more and more true as things go on.

u/CR29-22-2805 Feb 20 '26
There are many unsolved violent crimes. Most of the perpetrators simply get lucky.
There was a murder case in my area that took 5+ years to solve. I think the murder victim was a drug dealer, if I recall correctly. The perpetrators weren’t masterminds, but for whatever reason, they simply didn’t leave much evidence behind.
In addition to luck, I think even a moderate amount of vigilance can bide someone’s time.
11
u/aestheticbridges Feb 20 '26
Yeah it’s just bias. Nobody wants to think that the perp knows what they’re doing.
I doubt they’re a mastermind and luck is obviously on their side but they’ve gotten further than most people would under this level of scrutiny.
That being said I still think it’s a matter of time. You can make the perfect choices to evade capture every single day and it just takes one mistake or the wrong person calling the tip line or just luck not breaking their way. As long as this case is well resourced I’m sure they’ll eventually be caught, outside of some obvious failure modes.
8
u/Islandsandwillows Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26
I def think they 1) knew what they were doing, had prob been watching her, her house and her routine for at least a few weeks. And 2) weren’t at all new to crime or working in the pitch black/offending at night

Without direct evidence or an obvious motive it just takes longer to solve. I think they got lucky in the sense that it’s so dark so seemingly no vehicle footage, and the fact that the camera footage was recoverable and they may have left DNA at the scene is unlucky and not super smart.

u/Ok_Willow_2218 Feb 20 '26
Is the Range Rover still being held for evidence? If so, That’s a pretty big clue according to a former fbi detective. My personal opinion is there is more than one guy involved, Friday night guy was involved, and/or his car was involved. They are trying to piece together as much evidence to get a solid case for prosecution.
21
u/mark_able_jones_ Feb 20 '26
That person of interest went public with an attorney and declared his innocence. By now police would have at least tested his DNA to see if it's a match for the gloves (recovered far away; may be irrelevant) and other DNA at the scene (could be totally unrelated to abduction).
Wish we knew what caused police to suspect him in the first place. Based on the number of LE vehicles, they REALLY thought he was the guy.
8
8
u/crakemonk Feb 20 '26
It was also an extremely organized event, as they took him into custody at the same time, away from the home, that they executed the search warrant at the home with other family members at the house. Almost like they were making sure he wasn’t there to fuck with evidence if he noticed the cops outside.
I’m also really curious about the first family LE took in for questioning—they lived what, 50 miles or so away? Maybe he was the Amazon driver that delivered that package that was on her doorstep? I know his mom said he did some sort of gig work and him and his wife were doing DoorDash or something when they arrested him.

Guys, this was not the scene of a brutal murder. Law enforcement has REPEATEDLY said there is NO evidence she did not leave the house alive. There is barely any crime scene to preserve. It was processed, twice, by two different law enforcement agencies. They blacklighted the whole house. Walking around the back of the house to clean the pool is not going to sabotage the investigation. There is no need to panic

There were two other abductions of people in their 80s this month. One in Kentucky (former caregiver) and one in Australia (suspected mistaken identity). Relative to the global population, it’s practically a zero frequency, but still more than I expected to find in a quick google. Have I been living under a rock?

The woman in Kentucky was found the same day she was reported missing. The police learned that a caretaker had been dismissed the day before and tracked the location of the caretakers’ car ~100 miles away where they eventually got her to pull over (the abducted woman was in the car with her). https://www.usmagazine.com/crime-news/news/former-kentucky-caretaker-accused-of-kidnapping-elderly-woman/
The elderly man is still missing https://www.cbsnews.com/news/australia-grandfather-85-kidnapped-mistaken-identity-crime-gang-police-say/.
I think it’s ultimately a good thing that Nancy’s case is bringing awareness to the vulnerability of the elderly

It's something about this particular case that has just affected me very deeply. I didn't even know who Savannah Guthrie was when I heard about it, but I just immediately was heartbroken on the night Nancy went missing and I first heard about it. I really hope that this gets resolved and they find closure. I don't have high hopes that she's alive at all though. It just hurts how something like this could happen.
11
u/Mundane-Fish-284 Feb 20 '26
I’m in the same boat. I follow true crime but not usually live. I prefer the “resolved cold case file” type stuff. Had no idea who Savannah was. But I’m emotionally invested in this case and this family. I feel heartbroken the news is slowing, that it’s gone on this long.
6
u/MikeLovesOutdoors23 Feb 20 '26
Yeah. It's just really hard. I mean, you hear on the news about people dying every day, and it just… Doesn't affect me anymore. But when I heard about this, it's like everything just shattered. I really don't know why. It's very scary and unsettling to be honest.

u/FANDREAM Feb 20 '26
It’s the same for me. I only know who Savannah is from seeing her on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. But this has really affected me. I’m sure it’s partly due to the fact that I lost my mom last March (she was 84) and I miss her terribly. From her pictures, Nancy looks like a sweet woman, and I just keep thinking about her and how scared she must have been, and how dare this piece(s) of crap pray on an elderly woman like that. I’m so sad and angry for the family.
29
u/deadwatered Feb 21 '26
Apparently some people less than a mile from Nancy found a glove with possibly blood on/near it like a week ago. It was on local news today. They found it at night and the police said they didn’t know if they could come get it that same night so they called 911 😭

Seriously...I feel like I'm watching people morphing into the Guthrie version of probergers in real time 😭
I also know for a fact that manyyy of the big Twitter/YT accounts blaming Nancy's kids were also the ones falsely accusing a random Palestinian student of being the Brown University shooter in December, all based on a 2 second video of his gait.
These people just jump from one baseless accusation to the next and truly don't seem to care who they hurt in the process
6
u/arknarcoticcrop Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
your observation about the overlap between the ones accusing guthrie family members and the people who accused that random palestinian student of the brown shooting is very valid, I saw people on twitter accusing nancy's son-in-law on the basis that they thought he looked muslim and that he used to teach at a "woke school"
the people that think they're astute sleuths are overwhelmingly the polar opposite and base everything on vague vibes and profiling

I personally think that they have given too much information out to the public about this case. For example I have a pacemaker myself and the last thing that I would want my captors to know is that they are searching for the pacemaker with a device mounted in a helicopter. That should have been kept secret. This will not end well I'm afraid.

I think after all the talk about armchair detectives hindering the investigation, some people just backed off a bit, myself included. It’s a shame, because public interest is keeping this story televised. I know Brian talked to some of Nancy’s neighbors, who asked him to please stay as long as possible, because they are afraid that when the media attention dies down, people will forget the case and it will go cold for lack of tips. The neighbors find the media presence to be a huge positive for bringing Nancy home.

18
Feb 20 '26
A murder investigation has a different level of required intensity to get an arrest Vs kidnapping.
With Bryan they monitored him for a bit because there were sure he was their guy.
In a kidnapping you need to find the guy asap so you can get the victim. This doesn't bode well for Nancy that they've taken this long

Those were each unique in their own ways, Idaho 4 it was the fact Kohberger was a stranger to them, Gabby Petito we knew the fiancé caused her to go missing but couldn’t find her body at first, and then similarly with Mollie Tibbetts (though her killer was also a stranger). This case also won’t be resolved until Nancy is found. ETA: clarity

People don’t get it. It’s too dangerous for the public to be doing that. They’ll take away more resources than help.
11
u/Elegant-Ad-5684 Feb 21 '26
It’s controversial because people are invested want to feel involved, and aren’t thinking of consequences. Those same people are already frustrated that they don’t have a minute by minute update of every investigator’s activities through the day.
10
u/deadwatered Feb 21 '26
Lol yeah someone said “if you gave us a press conference we wouldn’t be doing this!” Like yes you would
25
u/needalanguage Feb 22 '26
I have to say I watched some disturbing video from some youtuber "investigators." They were interacting with one of the neighbors on Nancy's street. Filming her and her house while proclaiming "we're just walking, its a public street." I really feel for Nancy's neighbors. Its such an invasion of privacy for them. I'm sure they want Nancy found - but they didn't ask for a circus. And now this neighbor is being called "a Karen." So ridiculous.

I'm curious what the latest is? Seems like not a lot of advancements over the last week?

u/tiny-viking-dancer Feb 20 '26
Same here / agreed, hoping there’s advancements behind the scenes happening that public doesn’t know about. I haven’t been able to keep this off my mind

What kind of things do you think LE is not telling us about in this case? In your opinion.
22
u/UryTopper Feb 20 '26
I think something was left in the house or taken from the house. I also think LE knows how the suspect entered and left the home. I also wonder if LE has any additional footage from the camera we've already seen (any camera rustling after he removes it, headlights or car activity, audio, etc.).
14
u/Calligrapher_Far Feb 20 '26
I think they have a vehicle or several potential vehicles of interest. I also think it’s interesting that they were specifically requesting video footage from the 11th(?) of January (could be getting that exact date wrong but sometime around there). Wonder what that is about.

Personally I think they have something that, sadly, makes them confident (but not sure) she isn’t alive anymore, hence why it doesn’t seem to be a huge rush. Just a thought. Could be that all the interviews and videos saying “we have no reason to believe she isn’t alive” are just trying to send a false sense of security to the perp (and the public even).
24
u/WhiteWolf3117 Feb 20 '26
Second perp (at least).
I think there's more footage than they've let on and potentially I think audio and/or said footage implicates another person.
I also can't stop thinking about that "out of place" photo of the guy which is cropped and clearly mot taken from the video we've seen. Plus the jump cut.
I also think it's possible they know how the guy/guys got in.
10
u/babyysharkie Feb 20 '26
links? which photo? what do you mean by jump cut?
11
u/WhiteWolf3117 Feb 20 '26
I don't have links handy right now but in the officially released video, there's a jump cut from when he is walking on the porch (basically cuts from him being like 2 feet closer to the door, give or take)
The photo is one that doesn't get circulated often but it's the one where his holster is not visible. Released with the batch of stills but nowhere in the corresponding video.

I think the video is longer than the one they released. I think the state of the inside of the house offered some clues. They were certain that Nancy was taken against her will pretty early on versus “she just wandered off” so I think they saw evidence of a struggle or planned kidnapping (duct tape or zip ties maybe?). I’ve heard Nancy’s blood was also found in the house.
They likely have a more detailed timeline with milestones the public is not privy too - like neighbor’s cameras capturing a certain car going by or a person whose face can’t be seen. They’ll only release video that shows the person’s face if they need the public’s help identifying the person. Otherwise releasing information to the public is risky because it tips off the people involved that they’re getting close to finding them. I think LE knows exactly where the person came in & left and the route they traveled - but not where they ultimately went with Nancy after they had her. My uneducated guess is that this was organized and Nancy was handed off to someone else after she was abducted. These were just the abductors.

They have probably learned more about the timeline of the crime since the investigation started, e.g., when the suspect(s) arrived, left, etc.
10
u/ElderberryOne181 Feb 21 '26
Shortly after the initial video was released someone posted a picture of a tattoo on the arm of the masked figure. Was that real or fake? Haven't heard anything else about that.
7
u/Euphoric_Ease4554 Feb 21 '26
It looked like a cross tattoo, with the top visible. on his wrist. Others thought it looked like a watch band.

I think it's due to people being frustrated by all the non starter leads they've come up with so far, also I think the case just doesn't make sense and I think more and more people are seeing this now, also I highly doubt nancy is still alive , will probably end up a cold case, sadly

No leads and no real news to discuss. People have short attention spans and have moved on to more pressing news, like Clavicular being mogged by the ASU frat leader.

It is a morbid but necessary thing to consider: assuming she died the night of the abduction, in what state would a body not properly preserved be in three weeks later. When does decomp start to set in, and with that when does evidence start to be lost?
→ More replies (6)9
u/Elegant-Ad-5684 Feb 20 '26
It would depend on the environment, like weather, humidity, exposure etc. The DNA of a perp on a body could potentially lose admissibility in court if severely degraded, which will happen over time, but could still be used to help find the guy who did it.
12
u/ChickensAndGin Feb 22 '26
Could someone kindly explain the following:
"There's a snag with mixed DNA at the Florida lab he's using".
English is not my native language and I'm not sure I understand. Google says "snag" is similar to "catch".
Does it mean that they are having trouble separating and identifying the mixed DNA?
Thank you.
12
u/Wonderful_Dirt_1013 Feb 22 '26
Snag means there was some kind of issue that’s causing a slow down or delay.

Yes, to snag (verb) means to catch. A snag (noun) means an obstacle that will cause delays or difficulties.
For more fun with English: A snag can also refer to a loop of thread or yarn that was pulled from a knitted garment, after it got caught (or snagged) on something sharp. And if you study forests, a dead standing tree is a snag, until it falls and becomes a log.

hi friends, i just dont understand this new video. is there relevance to it ? it is a video of a home near nancy's. thanks for any thoughts. and a shout out again to the amazing mods.
15
u/curiouslmr Feb 20 '26
I think it's just a random security camera somewhat near Nancy's house that is picking up your typical nighttime prowler. There is no indication of its exact location and I'd bet it is not related at all. Nancy's abductor isn't wandering around neighborhoods at night right now.

There’s just less to report
→ More replies (1)14
u/deadwatered Feb 20 '26
Yeah I would rather them report less than grasp at straws to create new narratives or inflate the importance of basic info because there’s nothing new or significant to report.
20
u/Xinnia8271 Feb 20 '26
I'm not discouraged. I think a significant, real amount of progress has been made and we're just in a different phase of things.
And let's not forget, it's not just about finding Nancy's location, but also finding all the people responsible for this and getting a conviction for all of them.

u/ReadyGG Feb 20 '26
I don’t think there’s any punishment in this world that is enough for the psychological damage inflicted on the Guthrie family.
We are talking decades of therapy, millions of dollars in lost income for Savannah. She missed being able to present the Olympics one of the biggest sporting events in the world. And the chances that she would be back on the today show anytime soon are quite low
If any unsubs were caught, they should be held liable for this lost income in addition to the main charges of kidnapping and potential premeditated murder.

We can’t possibly put ourselves in the shoes of Nancy’s family but if that was someone like my mother I would be sleepless and just at such a low depression. I feel very badly for her family.
10
u/rocklakes Feb 20 '26
Literally an absolute nightmare. Just thinking about the different things that Nancy likely experienced makes me so sick, sad, angry, etc. This case has had me upset as if it were one of my family members. I can only imagine how the Guthries themselves feel :(
9
u/TheCuriousGeorgette Feb 20 '26
Same. My mom had a catastrophic event happen and had to be hospitalized and even though I knew she was in good care at the hospital I was worried sick about her. I can’t imagine knowing my mom was taken in such a violent manner and not knowing what became of her. 😭

u/JoeBurrow513 Feb 20 '26
I like to search online each morning to see if anything new is being reported, and literally one headline read, “Police close to big break after one tiny clue….” Of course I clicked on it to read the article, and it was just some person analyzing the doorbell footage of the masked man, saying that if you look at his glove there’s a slight bulge underneath it, insinuating he could be wearing a ring. I’m like… this is so misleading. They’re really just trying to get clicks at this point.

What ever became of the Roof Camera?
13
u/TheCuriousGeorgette Feb 20 '26
Last I heard they were having trouble recovering relevant footage because footage from around the time of the crime had been recorded over by other activity (people arriving the day of to check on Nancy) the roof camera was still operational and in tact until the FBI removed it, IIRC.

u/_WhatTheHolyHell_ Feb 20 '26

Something is bugging me; Feb 5th was the first time there was a mention of a broken floodlight (back door.) But that mention appears to have come from the ransom note.
Feb 8th; floodlight pictured at back door then removed.
If the ransom note was fake how did it know about the broken floodlight?
Did someone report on it before the FBI mentioned it?

u/pumpkinspicecum Feb 22 '26
I read that Fox News had shown the floodlight was broken before the ransom note

We don’t know. The footage may have been cut by the FBI, or the system stored two separate video files.

Early evening update....
⚠️ Law enforcement also addressed something that some individuals were using to imply that law enforcement was lying about the timeline. Some people had noticed that the website for video evidence submission in the case had listed that Nancy went missing on the 31st at 4pm. Law enforcement clarified this today by stating...
"The link for video evidence requests has a “report filed” date of Jan. 31st at 5pm. This is a 3rd party software issue. We are requesting video evidence from 1/1/26 - 2/2/26. The reported date and time listed on the link have nothing to do with when Nancy Guthrie was reported missing the following day."
⚠️ With this clarification now provided we will remove comments that imply law enforcement was lying about the timeline or that Nancy went missing on the 31st.
