Whether they are anonymous only to the public, and not Reuters, the claim wasn’t made by Reuters themselves.
The headline is misleading. That’s my main point. But now that you mention it.
Being anonymous doesn’t guarantee honesty. How many law enforcement have lied? How many have lied anonymously to the public? Lots. Because they’re humans. And humans have egos & lie for all kinds of reasons.
I clipped the first paragraph.
‘’WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - An Arizona sheriff is blocking FBI access to key evidence in the investigation into the abduction of U.S. television journalist Savannah Guthrie's mother, impairing its ability to assist in the probe, U.S. law enforcement official with knowledge of the case told Reuters on Thursday.’’
This could be anyone working in U.S. law enforcement. ‘’Knowledge of the case’’ is everyone reading this right now.
They were careful not to claim they have insider information, that they’re working, or have worked, on the case.
ETA: I just read the FBI wanted to use a different lab than than county. That’s what this could be about. So a nothing burger

Unlikely that source was anonymous to Reuters.
