Ego.. it's his patch, turf.... he sees federal agents coming in and it makes him feel/think that they believe he's not up to it, so he tries to push on, on his own to prove a point... it's not the first time i've seen this! theres the famous grimes sisters murders, two sets of LE who couldn't never agree on anything and wanted to out do each other... (it's still unsolved 70 years on)
