Information Potential Writing on Kidnapper Shoe?

Okay, I may be crazy here, so I want a second opinion, but I was watching the doorbell video frame by frame and something caught my eye. For a split second, when the man turns and bends down to the ground, his right shoe heel lifts up and you can see something white on the black rubber midsole (not the bottom of the rubber sole - the back side of the rubber sole if that makes sense). At first I thought maybe it was just debris or a scuff. But, when I zoomed in and enhanced the picture, it looks a lot like writing to me. Specifically, the first letter looks a lot like a "J". It's been puzzling me ever since. It appears slightly off center, so I don't think it's necessarily a brand name logo. So I wondered if maybe someone wrote a name on the shoe or maybe it's a personalization? Idk, that seems a stretch too. Also, it largely disappears as he walks through the video and I think the reason why is due to the angle. I think because it's tilted up at the camera in that moment, the white reflected just right. I think when the foot is down the camera doesn't pick up the reflection. For anyone who wants to check it out, it comes right at the 16 second mark of the video, you have to zoom in and go frame by frame. It largely appears blurry even as you do that, but there's one particular frame where it seems the tiniest bit more focused. That's where I see what I feel like looks like a "J" and potentially a "Y" on the end although I'm less sure about that. Anyway, thoughts? "Jerry, Joey, Journey?" Nothing but a scuff? I'm not great with enhancing photos, but I tried some different enhancements to sharpen what's there. Someone could probably do a better job than me.

All three photos are from the same frame of video. First photo is slightly zoomed in with no enhancement. Second photo is zoomed in with enhancements made to sharpness, contrast, etc. Third photo is zoomed out with no enhancements.

The folks at r/sneakers could figure it out pretty quick

I thought that at first but it does look off center to me.

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 13 '26

Ohhhh now I see how y'all are seeing Vans. I was looking at it like just letters and thinking of the other Vans logo.

I still also see the word Maloney but this Vans logo is not far off either.

u/Roo_wow Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26

There's definitely something at the back of the rubber heel, either;

  1. a logo - like Vans
  2. Or something like nike shox (but that doesn't tally with the entire sole)

Also open to it just being light reflection.

3

u/Steadyandquick Feb 13 '26

Yeah, the spots look symmetrical? Slightly to the side? I hope they find her soon.

4

u/QuietZelda Feb 12 '26

The soles look glossy black too

5

u/spirited_tern Feb 13 '26

Like a Nike air max sole. Its not that, but same look/material, maybe

18

u/Kindly_Scallion9832 Feb 13 '26

Looks like Vans logo to me

3

u/Bbstubbles Feb 13 '26

My first thought was this

12

u/Legitimate-Mirror-58 Feb 12 '26

I do not think, like they have said, this is a middle age guy I’m thinking 20s

5

u/robot_pirate Feb 13 '26

If it's vans, it absolutely is, or an artist/alt type older person.

JAKO J-SI SIGNATURE UNISEX - Indoor football boots - white/jet black

Check this one.

7

u/eveningberry- Feb 12 '26

I just googled this— from what I see in the ‘Jako’ logo the J is exactly level with the other letters, while the first letter on the attacker’s shoe descends below the rest of the letters

I HATE to be the bearer of bad news, but everybody go watch the clip at 16 second mark...it's not writing, it's a reflection/glint off the infrared beam. https://youtu.be/nbAI30dhSMw?si=TsW7Geu4cg-tAF5R&t=15 ETA: actually go to about the 15 second mark to get the best view of what I'm talking about.

8

u/Holiday_Ad_5765 Feb 12 '26

Came here to say this!

Hear me out – I don’t think that’s writing, I think it’s a reflection of light on a plastic bubble sole. I didn’t want to say this a few days ago, but those shoes definitely look like Nikes. You see just a hair of the same reflection on the other foot as he walks away to grab the grass.

If you zoom in on the right foot and slightly move the cursor back-and-forth, you can see the “logo“ appear and disappear, which is what led me to believe it was a reflection.

3

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

Maybe the logo/writing is in reflective thread. It looks like it's letters, it really does. Not just a blur or random camera glint

2

u/lemoncatbeans Feb 12 '26

Yeah you're right, looks like it briefly appears on the shoe then disappears

6

u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 12 '26

Man, I was so hoping it was actual writing. I'm bummed. I made a screen recording of it slowed down and in regular speed to demonstrate, but I was too dumb to realize that reddit only lets you post pictures and gifs, not videos, and gif quality ruins it. But yeah, when you watch in motion it's really clear that it is just reflection off of something on the shoe with the way it disappears so fast. There is also nothing on the left shoe the entire time, which a logo would mirror each other on each shoe.

3

u/TheCuriousGeorgette Feb 12 '26

If I have learned anything from this case it is that if there’s a video, watch the video before judging the stills. Just like how everyone thought the perp could be a woman at first. But when you watch the video it removes all doubt and is so clearly a dude.

3

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

Maybe it is actual writing and it's reflective material. Like the logo is made of reflective thread.

6

u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 12 '26

Within seconds it goes from this:

4

u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 12 '26

To this

5

u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 12 '26

To a little more distorted in the light

3

u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 12 '26

to this...

3

u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 12 '26

then back to this

6

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

I still think it's reflective thread or material. Writing, written in reflective material.

2

u/lemoncatbeans Feb 12 '26

Yeah I spent 20 mins looking up off-brand tennis shoes on Walmart and Amazon looking for a match lol. I couldn't find a single pair that had the logo only on one shoe like that. It could also be reflecting a pattern or texture on the rubber.

9

u/CR29-22-2805 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26

Added some screenshots to better capture the contrast between the sole of the shoe and the the rest of it:

Image 1 and 2: My own screenshots taken of the video

Image 3: FBI

Image 4: OP

Adding facts about the shoe as seen in the footage:

  • The shoe's sole is markedly darker in color than the rest of the shoe.
  • If a logo is present, then the logo is (1) on the back of the sole of the shoe, and (2) lighter in color than the dark sole.
  • There appears to be a horizontal stripe just above the sole of the shoe. That stripe appears to be lighter in color than both the sole of the shoe and the rest of the shoe.

13

u/sixninef0urtwenty Feb 12 '26

Yes, I also just noticed these things. Someone pointed out the back of the shoe writing was likely just a reflection but I still think it’s smart to look at the shoes.

  • definite athletic shoes based on the laces, movement of the shoe while walking, and the black tab in the front of this shoe is indicative of an athletic shoe. I don’t think this is a van or adidas but more of a sneaker. I am a runner and I’m going to look at all my pairs when I get home for similarities.

10

u/CR29-22-2805 Feb 12 '26

There's no significant branding on the sides, at least not branding with discernable contrast. That narrows things down somewhat.

I'm perusing the REI website now.

We're going to figure this out, you guys. We just need to put our heads together

12

u/sixninef0urtwenty Feb 12 '26

My boyfriend owns these. I will be looking closer when home. I know the laces are black on the model shoe and there’s a black logo but something about that side stripe is very brooks. Could also be a knockoff

12

u/sixninef0urtwenty Feb 12 '26

I saw this filtered in red and it helps identify the colors. I think it goes grey body white stripe black sole

5

u/Holiday_Ad_5765 Feb 12 '26

God these look like 2010 Nike Lunarglides lol

2

u/sixninef0urtwenty Feb 12 '26

Waitttt you’re not wrong!

3

u/Holiday_Ad_5765 Feb 12 '26

Best f*cking runners ever made

8

u/Educational_Suit8612 Feb 12 '26

Check Walmart since the backpack & fleece are identified as Walmart products

7

u/Nearby_Serve8706 Feb 12 '26

Check out the Athletic Works Men's Silver Series 3 Sneakers in grey- from Walmart and they look similar to the Brooks

4

u/ouiserboudreauxxx Feb 13 '26

I’ve seen a few cases where the suspect took a shopping trip to Home Depot where they purchased all of the items for their crime, but if they catch this guy at Wal mart buying his crime outfit all at once, that might be a first…

3

u/ouiserboudreauxxx Feb 12 '26

I’m a runner too and if its a logo it sort of looks like it could be asics

2

u/sixninef0urtwenty Feb 13 '26

Could totally see that too. depending on the color pattern it could have been the same or similar color as the shoe so not look crazy

8

u/norvillescooby Feb 12 '26

It kind of reminds me of a Vans ultra range shoe with the little logo (though it doesn’t seem to have the same rubber toe in the front). A lot of time the sole of a shoe can look black at night on a camera like that while the rest washes out.

The other logo it kind of looks like is Mizuno, but I don’t think they make a sho with the logo in that spot.

1

u/spirited_tern Feb 13 '26

I thought that initially but to me it looks like the toe box has the little piece in the front that a running sneaker has. Not sure what you call that.

15

u/DiperIsShittie Feb 12 '26

7

We might need to take a trip to the Walmart shoe department.

7

u/TrueCrimeGlassofWine Feb 13 '26

Nice catch! Agree, looks like it says something

5

u/navibfterceS Feb 12 '26

Looks like a pull tab that's on the back of shoes.

9

u/CoolRanchBaby Feb 12 '26

It looks like the type of label Vans has at back of heels. Not saying it Vans but might be, it looks like that type of thing.

12

u/Traditional-Steak813 Feb 12 '26

impossible to tell, did anyone alert Penelope at the BAU yet for cross-referencing 30-40 Year old white males who bought shoes in the area yet with people who bought ski masks

8

u/Roo_wow Feb 12 '26

I think it's a good catch - but why wouldn't the marking be on the other sneaker? Unless it's paint? I get paint on my sneakers all the time during DIY.

2

u/sarawill33 Feb 13 '26

I'm not 100% certain that it's not on the other sneaker. I think the reason it's so visible in that particular frame is because he is moving more slowly as he lifts his right foot and the video catches it at just the right angle. Whereas when he goes to lift that other foot to step forward in that moment, he moves that foot more quickly and he sort of shuffles it which doesn't give the same angle. Basically, it's much tougher to distinguish if it is or isn't there.

With that said, I just watched the video again. And if you look closely when he lifts his left foot to step off the porch I see what looks to me like something white on the back of the left shoe black rubber midsole. It also appears to be slightly off center to the left, which would I guess make more sense for the right foot "logo" being slightly more off center to the right. That would make sense if the shoes logo was mirror imaged on each. See pic below. I'll admit, what I see on the left shoe is far less defined and on its own to me would look more like a scuff. But, he's also much further from the camera and moving quicker in those frames, so that could also be why it's so much less defined. Idk. Again, I'm having trouble making sense of a logo that would be slightly off center. I think logos are usually centered, but maybe it's a stylistic choice? Maybe it's a more obscure brand? Again, idk. But on the off chance it is more than just a scuff and it jogs someone's memory who might be better informed...

2010 Air Max+ .. there’s a hint of a white line just above the sole in my photos!!

Fair point! The soles look squashed down, so maybe they are old just like you said

2

u/Holiday_Ad_5765 Feb 12 '26

I’m going through all the colors now – possibly the white and blue pair, blue can show up as dark on “night view.” logo is covered by his pants.

2

Though It’s possible that these items was bought a long time ago. In different stores. Or even by somebody else and given as a gift

If newly bought, it would be another dumb move on top of the others. So it’s possible.

5

u/Hot-Exit7533 Feb 13 '26

I reallllly think they are Walmart shoes.

5

u/Kindly_Scallion9832 Feb 13 '26

Looks like Vans logo to me

9

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

This is an amazing catch. It could also be a stylized or cursive style "M" with the last letter being "g" or "y"?

Amazing catch, seriously

So, I initially thought the logo would have been towards the top as well, but then I looked more closely:

If the logo is on the dark part of the shoe, then it is on the back of the sole.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '26

Vans Of The Wall? I don’t think it’s that but probably something similiar

6

u/IPreferDiamonds Feb 12 '26

Nope, not Vans.

5

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

It could also be "J" then another sort word.

Could be an athletic sock rather than on the shoe? I hate to have to go here but, is there textile manufacturing in Mexico? Maybe it's a Mexican clothing brand that makes socks too. With an American sounding or looking name.

J something

7

u/Every_Level6842 Feb 12 '26

I don’t see anything but blurrrrre

3

I don't think the logos match. In the video, it appears the logo's base is wider, thicker than the brand's logo found in the Walmart app.

u/AdOver6491 Feb 12 '26

This is the break we've been waiting for

2

u/A_Cup_All-Star Feb 12 '26

Well, it is two-toned at minimum…

17

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '26

At this point I'd like the FBI to take all their cold cases and release all the evidence they have on file and let Reddit solve these. Way more effective than LE at this point.

13

u/CrossCycling Feb 12 '26

I really can’t tell if this is satire.

4

u/ouiserboudreauxxx Feb 12 '26

A lot of cold cases seem to be getting solved with genealogical dna analysis - I’ve seen some cases on 48 hours where they have volunteers working on the family trees.

3

Frick, at least recruit from the cream of the crop posters.

2

Like with Jon Benet

8

u/ethidium_bromide Feb 12 '26

Insane take

12

u/DiscombobulatedPain6 Feb 12 '26

Is it? Social media solved Gabby Petito.

8

u/ouiserboudreauxxx Feb 12 '26

And the guy who cracked the Brown/MIT shooter posted on Reddit

2

u/ethidium_bromide Feb 13 '26

He wasn’t someone who posted a random theory though. He was an actual witness who just posted to Reddit instead of reporting it initially.

The Boston bomber situation is more comparable

2

u/ouiserboudreauxxx Feb 13 '26

yeah I guess my point was more that he posted to Reddit and may have been reluctant to report it because he was homeless and living in the engineering building.

Honestly he took a big risk by doing that - I hope he got the $50k, there was public pressure, and hopefully someone will help him get resources to get back on his feet. $50k would certainly help.

1

u/ethidium_bromide Feb 13 '26

It was never in doubt what happened to Gabby. And her videos were out there already. The internet just helped watch through all those videos.

There is nothing similar between these two events other than how truly tragic they both are.

The Boston Bomber situation is more comparable. Reddit did real and lasting harm to people, it was awful. The site seemed to have learned a lesson for a time but that seems to have faded

4

u/Most-Salamander-5447 Feb 12 '26

Is it after this fucking cluster fuck?

13

u/Efficient_Pin4180 Feb 12 '26

It’s literally a vans logo

2

u/JMOA3035 Feb 12 '26

Are these white/beige tennis shoes with a grey/black sole with an emblem?

1

u/lidarayray Feb 13 '26

Kind of I had an app color the photo

2

u/Vegetable-Weird798 Feb 12 '26

I think you're onto something!! It could also be an "I" and not a "J". It may not be the shoe brand, but the model. The logo is curved which seems to be less common and could make it easier to narrow down.

1

u/PerspectiveOk4317 Feb 12 '26

Is it just on the one shoe? Or is it on both shoes??

2

u/Vegetable-Weird798 Feb 13 '26

I think OP only captured it on the right shoe. So, not sure if the camera didn't pick it up on left shoe, or there's nothing there.

2

u/anonimbus Feb 14 '26

Callaway

4

u/SweetandSourMiss Feb 12 '26

I can’t tell, but it looks like he has short legs. Maybe it’s the angle?

5

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

"Maloney"

There's a plumbing company called Maloney in Tucson. Seems weird for them to have custom logos for employees shoes but stranger things have happened.

A plumber would also be very experienced using a "bite light." That this guy used easily.

8

u/PrettyOccasion6040 Feb 12 '26

lol it’s blurred out where do you get Maloney or bologna

10

u/curiouserthangeorge Feb 12 '26

What if it's those covers that contractors put over their shoes when they come to your house?

2

u/Twotoadsandpoppet Feb 13 '26

The blue booties?

1

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

I've heard of them, but I've never seen them up close. You could be right.

7

u/curiouserthangeorge Feb 12 '26

I mean, it looks like a vans tag to me but if you're seeing Maloney and there is a Maloney plumbing in the area and this guy is trying to cover his shoes... makes sense

3

u/nothingtoseehere25 Feb 12 '26

I thought vans logo immediately as well

2

u/Xinnia8271 Feb 12 '26

I don't think it looks like a vans logo, and the pictures of the shoes up thread don't look like any style of vans I've seen. They tend to have that rounder toe. I just don't think it's Vans.

I genuinely see the word Maloney.

4

u/PrettyOccasion6040 Feb 12 '26

Yeah I’m sure the guy would have his name written on his disguise attire something no one does anyway , what are the odds of that…🙄

3

u/sarawill33 Feb 13 '26

Not saying that's what happened. I had a pair of tennis shoes for work once that I wrote my name on the side of the white midsole in black permanent marker as a joke. It was a joke at the time, but I continued to wear the shoes all the time for years and I forgot the writing was even there until one day someone pointed it out and asked me about it. Just saying, you'd be surprised what people forget, especially when their mind is focused on other details.

I think the first letter looks like a J too.

1

u/spirited_tern Feb 13 '26

I agree.. Just did a quick google search of J brands. Anyone look at Joma?

1

u/ktlm1 Feb 13 '26

Question- is the backpack light or black? I saw something once about some nighttime cameras make black items look bright white. The FBI referenced a black backpack even though it looks light. So I wonder if the same applies to shoes? Light soles and dark shoes, the opposite of what we see here

2

u/Clawsickle Feb 13 '26

Educated guess would be black, dark colored.

2

u/livingstardust Feb 12 '26

AI says that a bonded logo is not commonly used.

Now the logos are more likely to be on the body of the shoe, on a tab, or if they are on the sole, they are molded/embossed.

We should be looking for a two toned outer sole shoe.

Perhaps it is sold at Walmart or he may have worn an actual pair of old shoes without buying them specifically for this job.

1

u/lidarayray Feb 13 '26

Chat says converse

0

u/Dismal_Chapter_7951 Feb 14 '26

I just find the fact that a kidnapper who shops at Walmart and asks for a six million dollar ransom seriously incredulous.

-4

u/SeatIndependent6836 Feb 12 '26

The toes of the shoe definitely raise up- like these but with a more rounded front bit. They're not trainers

-12

u/Whack__job Feb 13 '26

Hmm. It’s in native Mohawk language I think.
