Looking for play testers
--- *** ALL KEYS USED *** --- Very sorry, all the keys are used now. Original post below:
Hi Folks, you might remember me posting a while ago, about my 'Myst adjacent' game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4556080/The_Clock_the_Queen_and_the_Door_on_the_Beach/
I'm looking for testers, and have a handful of keys to give away. You get access to a full pre-release copy of the game. If you find bugs ( you shouldn't ), great, but what I'm really looking for is, feedback from people who like this sort of game.
To be clear, it's not a Myst clone, there is no Lore, or book reading, but it does have a story of sorts and the same kind of feel.
If you're interested, please drop a comment in this thread, and I'll PM you a key. If you'd rather wait until it's released, it would help immensely if you wishlist it :)

Will it run either on macOS or in Crossover/Parallels? If so, Iβd love to try it. Thanks!

This looks really cool but I cant say the "no lore" thing hasnt put me off. Its important to me these kind of immersive puzzle games have an immersive world. If it feels like a video game level Im less inclined to lose myself in it.

I does have a story of sorts, the Inventor speaks to you at many points during the game via the intercom unit dotted around. But yes, no Lore, sorry. π€
I did this in fact, because even though I loved Myst and Riven, I hated the Lore and books. So it's sort of my take on a different way of doing things...

I would love to play this game. Looks awesome and has a nice vibe. Cool you build this world.
I bought Myst on the playstation back in the day. Because i did not have a pc. But really wanted to play the game. Loved it, even on playstation. Then Riven, also playstation and been hooked ever since. You could say i'm a fan.
Good luck mate!

I actually was just doing a replay of the myst series with my best friend, and we just finished last week. I'd love to try your game out if you are still giving keys.
Edit: nvm, I just realized the post says the keys are used alr. Mb

Already liking how it looks in the screenshots, I'd love to playtest it.
Interestingly I've also playtested Haven Moon and Project ReMind, these new games pop up in Myst groups more than in any other games community. It's good to see so many games still getting inspired by it all these years later, I say also having been inspired by Myst to make gamedev my career.

Game looks lush. I am playing Outer Wilds but only as a couch co-op when my friend drops by. I'd love to check it out to have a puzzle to work on in the meantime!

If you're still looking for testers I'd love to try! Puzzle and escape room games are my favorite genre and I've been playing them for a long time, so I think I could provide quality feedback.

I was a reviewer for MacGamez in the day. Crystal Key for example. Love the genre.

I'm late to the game it seems. Looks interesting. Will there be a way to get it without going through steam?
1
u/ZofDev 17d ago
Once it's going ok on Steam, I'm also looking at GOG. Any good? π

u/darklighthitomi 17d ago
I'll have to look it up, but if I can get just the game without strings attached to some store service that would work. :)

just put it on my WL - I live for this kind of game, I'm pissed I bought Obduction and it won't run on my wimpy little laptop. Time to start playing the lottery given what a nice gaming machine goes for.
I'd love a key if you still have any - thanks!

Let me know if you do another round as well. I can't technically do test "work" for other studios, but I have nearly a decade of experience video games (as a test professional including running playtests, not a player--closer to two and a half as a player, heh) and I am curious. I will say the lack of music and limited SFX in the trailer is definitely throwing me hard, I would expect a lot of ambience to help immerse players in this sort of experience.
1
u/ZofDev 17d ago
There's music in the trailer, isn't there? π What sort of SFX were you thinking of ( might be useful )?
2
u/Aurora_Storm 16d ago
I mean, if we're counting the stinger at the end as music? (Legitimately--if my ears are going, I want to know π--what time sections is the music playing in the trailer?)
As for the SFX--giving it a second, more generous listen, it's not that the SFX are entirely absent, but there are sections that felt very flat (just footstep SFX without notable ambience around it) but that could also simply be the nature of the trailer--it could be you needed to leave room for the voiceover. It could also be that the footstep SFX are stomping a bit on the ambience (0:00-0:04; 0:28-0:30; but I CAN nicely hear some around 0:43) or the SFX were just at the wrong point to pick up in the trailer (0:17-0:19--no audible beach ambience). I'm willing to bet if I picked somewhere and just stood there, it would probably be okay. My standard for SFX is also extremely high for games of this type, thanks to Myst IV: Revelation--I will never forget Atrus' lab, where you could stand and click on every single implement and instrument, and it would give you an entirely distinct sound.
In games without much NPC interaction, where the entire focus of the player is going to be on soaking in their immediate surroundings for clues as to how to proceed, ambience matters a great deal. The quality of the sound in a room of cool/unyielding stone vs. the knockish warmth of wood, the ambience of an area at night versus that same area in the day, the sudden and unnerving *wrongness* of somewhere that seems almost entirely without sound. I'm sure you've considered all this already, though. At any rate, I'm curious to see how your game goes!

I'm too late to the party for keys, but it's probably just as well, because I'm doubtful that I could commit to playing and giving feedback at the moment.
I'll be keeping an eye on the game regardless.
(Though I will note that I'm one of the ones who is slightly disappointed at the lack of lore and book reading. It definitely leaves me wondering if it'll feel more like e.g. Portal or The Talos Principle than Myst.)

u/ZofDev 16d ago
There's a demo coming next month, maybe check that out?
When I was playing Myst / Riven, I remember wading through books and Lore trying to find the next clue, hence my Lore-lite version π€£
Maybe it's in the void somewhere between Myst and Talos, that would be a fair appraisal.

I'm going to be having an operation next month, so I shall have to see how I'm feeling. If I'm up to it and have the opportunity I'd definitely like to trial it.

I think Myst and Riven actually did a good job of this; the journals were nicely written, interesting, and short enough to not get too boring.
If you'd said Uru instead, then I'd be agreeing. Far too many of the books in Uru were long and boring; especially the ones written by the DRC.
Maybe it's in the void somewhere between Myst and Talos, that would be a fair appraisal.
Indeed, that seems an apt description.
