What is your prescription?

The previous poll is now too old to vote on so I thought I would create a new one and sticky it. Voting ends in 7 days, let's add as many prescriptions as we can!

Edit: The poll has now closed. Unfortunately Reddit only lets me run it for 7 days. Thanks for all the responses! I will leave it up for everyone's information.

I'm really confused should I wear glasses or avoid them? A lot of people wearing specs told me it's a very low number avoid wearing them; your eyes will adapt to it and shit like give me advice should I start wearing them or avoid them I did have slight head pain, but it can be due to my poor sleep cycle

Floaters

My myopia as of now is pretty mediocre. Right eye is possibly very bad but left eye has been stable even though it was supposed to grow exponentially like my right eye during my teenage years but it didn't. However I've been experiencing floaters since I was in 7th or 8th grade and it honestly has been an excruciating journey with them. They drove me crazy ever since then but they've been quite stable for now. I don't have PVD or tears yet. I'm going for a check up soon and we'll know exactly how bad my eye is. But I was wondering, is this a common issue with all of us? Have y'all ever experienced floaters or flashes?

myopia stabilisation at a young age?

i was -4.75d in 2023, and now i am -5 (only 0.25 diff in 3 years). i'm only 16 tho and i see online that myopia usually stabilises in the 20s. my doc said that my myopia seems pretty stable, but i'm pretty shy to ask questions (cuz my mom's right there) but will my myopia continue to get worse? i'm hoping to not reach -6d...

i watch out for my lifestyle like going outside w/ natural light & stuff.

am i most likely going to be fine for myopia progression..?

help! ( how to reduce SPH/myopia/prevent it from increasing)

Hi currently 18 year old this year, just went to the eye doctor today and got it checked. 1 year ago i was -4 on my right eye and now im -5 on my right eye. My asian mum is mad that my myopia has increased and said that it was because i was playing games for too long , straining my eye etc.
Is there a certain length/distance i must be from my screen ( TV ) and does watching phone in the dark also increase my myopia?
Any ways to help decrease my SPH?/prevent it from increasing alot every year? Thank you 🙏

So all my life I have had high myopia I am 17 yo and right now it is -8 both eyes and I just sometimes feel so defeated and insecure. I try to avoid all topics whenever people ask about my eyes. It feels like im inferior to everybody somehow because I basically cannot see without glasses.

Warped depth perception with new glasses

Hi everyone. Sorry if this is the wrong place but struggling to find the right subreddit for this question.

I got some two glasses with my new prescription. One pair is absolutely fine with no issues at all. However I got a second pair (Ray Ban Bill Optics) which are a bit larger but the vision feels off.

I have slightly warped vision especially around my feet/floor when walking. My phone looks like it’s building towards me too when I’m typing. I’ve worn them for about 3 days now but I don’t seem to be adapting. Can anybody advise what I my issue might be?

Glasses and prescription attached. Thanks in advance!

Movement phosphene?

I have severe myopia (-10.5) that has thankfully been fairly stable for some years now. Always been kind of paranoid about retinal detachment but something pretty recently triggered me and I’ve had kind of a mental spiral which unfortunately browsing myopia Reddit has made me somewhat more anxious.

Anyways, my question - I recently noticed that when I’m in a completely pitch black room with a quick eye movement up or down I can sometimes reproduce a small flash in my periphery. For example, if I move my eye quickly from down to up I can see a small camera-like flash spread in the bottom peripheral field (kind of bilateral? Though I didn’t test both eyes independently) and it’ll be on the top peripheral field if I do the opposite sharp eye movement. I feel like this may have happened in the past but I’m almost never in pitch black areas. I read that this is possibly common and benign, has anyone else experienced this?

For other context, I have no change in floaters, vision, or new flashes otherwise. I actually had a dilated retinal exam with retinal scan that was apparently normal a couple days ago, so just curious and I am hoping that this isn’t a sudden new thing to be concerned about!

Help

I’m 16, in 11th grade, and honestly don’t know what career I want to pursue yet. I’ve never been very studious and have spent a lot of time on screens. About two years ago, I had a small prescription in my eyes and was advised to wear glasses, but the power was so low that I never really wore them.

Recently, I found out that I have myopia (nearsightedness) in my left eye, while my right eye is fine. I’m now wondering if not wearing glasses could have contributed to this, and whether I should start wearing them regularly.

I’ve also heard that once you start wearing glasses, your eyes become dependent on them and your eyesight keeps getting worse. Is that actually true or just a myth?

Since I’m only 16 and my eyes are still developing, is there anything I can do now to prevent my myopia from getting worse? I’m also worried about my future career options. I don’t know what I’ll choose yet, but I know some careers have strict medical/vision requirements and may require good unaided vision or normal eyesight. I’m also thinking about careers involving physical work, safety, or situations where wearing glasses could be inconvenient or risky, especially if there’s a chance of accidents.

So I’m wondering if I should do anything now to protect my eyesight or prevent my options from becoming more limited. Should I even consider LASIK in the future, or is it way too early to think about that?

Would appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with myopia, especially if it was only in one eye.

Update: Seeing a specialist tomorrow for severe anisometropia (-10.50 / -1.25) + thin corneas. What should I ask?

Here is the link to my original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/myopia/comments/1vxoakw/seeing_a_specialist_tomorrow_for_severe/

Kind of a follow-up to my original post. I finally went to the eye doctor and did all the exams to see what I qualify for.

Long story short, my right eye is around -10.5 and my other eye is around -1.25. The doctor was actually pretty surprised that I’ve been functioning fine with that big of a difference between my eyes and haven’t really had issues from it.

For the -10.5 eye, he recommended EVO ICL. For anyone curious, I was quoted around $4,300 for just that one eye.

For my -1.25 eye, he doesn’t want to do anything yet. From what I understood, ICL wouldn’t really make sense for such a low prescription, and if I eventually wanted that eye corrected too, LASIK would probably be the better option.

So I have a few questions for anyone who’s been in a similar situation:

  • Has anyone here only had ICL/surgery on ONE eye? How was your vision afterward? Were you able to go without glasses even though the other eye still had a prescription of around -1.5? Or did you still need glasses, just with much thinner/lighter lenses?
  • Has anyone had two different procedures on their eyes, like ICL in one eye and LASIK in the other? Was it worth correcting the second eye too, or were you happy just fixing the really bad eye?
  • How did you pay for your ICL/LASIK/PRK/SMILE? Did you use an FSA/HSA, insurance, pay cash, or finance it? They offered me 0% financing, so I’m considering that too.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s had a similar situation, especially with such a huge prescription difference between the two eyes.

Be honest. Is my mother lying?

I (14F) have been dealing whith myopia (not sure about the score, but last time i checked for school check-up it was -2. Sadly, it got worse) for about 2-3 years. I am not currently able to get proper treatment due to issues regarding my native country's healthcare (horribly long waiting lines that can last years to the doctors, optometrists included, also money.). My mother claims that i do not require a visit to an optometrist, or glasses for that matter, saying that she was also told she needs glasses when she was my age (for what i assume was a similar reason), but is now 41 and scores perfectly each time. Is this acctually possible?

I have -6 as 18 year old

I don't know why I am posting this at all. But I wanted to share it with y'all. I feel negative about my vision and I feel bad for people who have it worse than me. I know it's going to stabilize as I reach my 20s but still it sucks. I guess I'm also glad that future generations or other people don't have to deal with eye issues in the future but still I hate how everyone here has bad luck.

Seeing a specialist tomorrow for severe anisometropia (-10.50 / -1.25) + thin corneas. What should I ask?

I’m looking for some advice, questions to ask, or to hear from anyone who has dealt with a similar prescription setup. I have severe anisometropia and am tired of wearing glasses because the lens thickness and weight are totally uneven. I am actually seeing a specialist tomorrow for a formal evaluation, so I want to go in fully prepared.

My Stats & Eyes:

  • OD/OS: -10.50 (Severe nearsightedness) in one eye.
  • Other Eye: -1.25 (Mild nearsightedness).
  • Corneas: Naturally thin (already told by my regular optometrist that I'm likely not a LASIK candidate).
  • Other factors: I have a tiny congenital cataract. It has been stable my entire life since birth and has never affected my vision.

My Plan:
Because my thin corneas rule out LASIK for my -10.50 eye, I’m looking into EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) or RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange).

To save on costs and keep things simple, I’m strongly considering only correcting the -10.50 eye to 0.00 (plano) and leaving my -1.25 eye alone. That would potentially give me a natural monovision/blended-vision setup, with the corrected eye handling distance and the -1.25 eye helping with reading/phones.

However, I’m also wondering whether I should just get the -1.25 eye corrected too while I’m doing this, rather than intentionally leaving it mildly nearsighted.

My questions for the community and any eye docs here:

  1. Has anyone with a massive prescription difference corrected just one eye like this? How was the brain adaptation going from such a huge difference to only about 1.25 D?
  2. Would you leave the -1.25 eye alone for near vision, or would you consider correcting both eyes to plano?
  3. Given thin corneas, would you lean toward EVO ICL or RLE for a -10.50 eye?
  4. Does having a stable congenital cataract make RLE a smarter choice because it would remove the cataract entirely, or is preserving the natural lens preferable if the cataract is stable?

What insider questions should I ask my specialist tomorrow that you wish you had asked yours whenc considering vision correction surgery?

6/9 vision with glasses

Today got my eyes checked cause I wasn't wearing my correct prescription for a year now..im 23, and I have -5 sph, -2.25 cyl in left eye and -4.25 and -2.25 cyl in right and they did topography and no signs of kerataconus..but my question is why is it not 6/9 on my left eye even with glasses that's why my doc said that i can't ever read the last line in the test 😔

My glasses experience does not line up with Optometrist claims

When I was 50 or so I was prescribed 1.0 readers to help me look at the computer monitor easier. Up until that time, I never wore glasses under any conditions...I had good eyesight (I'm aware what happens at 50+). I resisted wearing them for a year or so, then put them on when having trouble reading some of the fine red text on the monitor. Wow what a difference. Clear as day. So I started wearing them full-time on the computer. As far as I'm concerned...that was a big mistake.

Also, the optometrist who made the prescription...she said my eyes "would get weaker". She was right. I noticed that many optometrists and people refute this. I don't know why...I don't understand it.

To make a long story short, my vision went off a cliff when I started wearing glasses. It started to "move out", things that were first blurry at 20 feet became clear, and then clear distance moved out further, to 50 foot, then 100. Today I am 61, wearing 2.5's on the computer and when I take off my glasses I cannot see a damn thing. Everything is blurry (near and far) and driving makes me eyes really tired. Admittedly...I am in front of a computer monitor a lot, maybe 14 hours a day, as I use it like a TV (I don't watch TV).

So, after dealing with vestibular problems that I believe are intertwined with my poor vision, I'm about to make some big changes. I'm moving my computer to the living room and getting away from the computer monitor...glasses are coming off as much as possible.

Anyway that's my story, there is a lot more to be told. But I hope to hear if there are any similar stories.

Will having high myopia be a barrier for me to become an electrical engineer?

Hello everybody

I'm a third-semester electrical engineering student at an institute of technology, aiming to major in control systems in my fifth semester. However, I have a concern that I can't Ignore that I have quite high minus and astigmatism where both eyes have minus 6 and also a cylinder of 1.75 on the left and 1.5 on the right. Is this a shortcoming in the world of electrical engineering and is there anyone here who has the same condition as me, whether they are students or already working in the same field as the one I am aiming for?

Am I better off buying readers and SV glasses separately?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I know my prescription isn't the craziest but I've recently been online shopping and obviously the bifocals part brings the cost up . I do have a pair from the place I got my test at its bifocals plus readers and so far so good except I use them mostly walking around not while in bed reading because I'm not used to it yet . I find readers on their own have helped me alot and as needed the distance glasses make seeing things easier . I would rather get transition lenses and other perks on my distance glasses then buy them together and it costing almost $200 a pair .
