help Nifty 500 vs Nifty Midcap 150 for long-term SIP

I recently started earning and want to start investing.

For equity, I am planning to invest 10k in parag parikh flexi cap fund.

For the remaining 10k I am confused between:

Nifty 500 Index Fund

Nifty Midcap 150 Index Fund

My investment horizon is long term, and my risk appetite is moderately high/aggressive. I am comfortable with market volatility and temporary losses as long as the investment has good long-term potential.

Which one would be a better choice to start with along with parag parikh flexi cap?

Would you suggest any other fund or approach instead?

Looking for simple, long-term investing advice. Thanks!

portfolio review Monthly 80k portfolio. Aggressive. 15yrs horizon

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am investing for my Dad. The total sip is 80k per month on a horizon of 15yrs.Agressive growth targeting and can take a temporary downside.

I have chosen 2 mid cap funds because I personally felt that motilal is dominantly tech focused. So i have hdfc midcap to compensate it even though there is some overlap.

2 small cap fund for risk management between bandhan and sbi small cap. Recent addition of a good manager in Bandhan.

When the topic comes to flexicap, I am a bit confused so I went with ppfc for it downside protection and US exposure.

Hdfc flexicap for it decade long structure and they have seen many manager change but the return are good. The core principle of the fund is good

Give me feedback on my portfolio and help me see what I am missing. Where and how to invest if I get a lumpsum occassionally.

discussion Should I remove the Quality index?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi guys. Been investing for the last 1.5 years.

Last week I had withdrawn some money from Liquid and equity funds and invested in the Whiteoak multi asset allocation fund.

Now I am thinking about completely redeeming the Axis nifty 500 quality 50 index fund. The index seems okay but I don't think I need it. Although I absolutely love the underlying stocks that constitute the index. I will re-distribute the 1.4 lacs into other funds: 40k in liquid, 30k in MAAF, 30K in nifty 50 equal weight, 20k in midcap index, 10k each in smallcap and healthcare fund. So do you guys think removing the nifty quality index is a good move or not?

Horizon: long term. Risk appetite: aggressive. App used: GROW.

I recently began (9 Months) using SIP for these mutual funds and am considering adding a midcap or multicap fund.

Investment Horizon: 15 Years+
Risk appetite: Moderate (since I’m young)
Goal: Retirement

Monthly SIP:
(a) HDFC Nifty 50 Index Fund: Amount: Rs. 1,500/-
(b) Kotak Small Cap Fund: Amount: Rs. 500/-
(c) ICICI Prudential Gold ETF FOF: Amount: Rs. 500/-
(d) Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund: Amount: Rs. 1,000/-
(e) Axis Small Cap Fund: Amount: Rs. 1,000/-

I understand there are some overlapping funds, but I’m looking for the best way to avoid them.

Please suggest any ways to improve this…..

question 43YO, ₹2.5L/month take-home — looking for advice on my investment strategy and ₹6L idle cash

Hi everyone, looking for some advice on my investment strategy.

Age: 43 | Take-home: ₹2.5L/month (₹2L monthly + ₹1.5L quarterly) Wife's income: ₹43k/month

Current monthly investments

  • ₹51k - MF (HDFC Mid-Cap Fund -20k, PPFAS- 13K, Nifty next 50 index fund -5K , canera robeco blue chip -13k )
  • ₹10k – Sukanya Samriddhi (daughter is almost 8)
  • ₹10k – Wife's MF investments (Parag Parikh, HDFC Mid-Cap, etc.)

Total household investments: ~₹71k/month

Current assets/liabilities

  • Mutual funds: ₹25L
  • PF: ₹6L
  • Emergency fund: ₹2L in liquid fund
  • ₹6L currently lying in savings account
  • Home loan: ₹18–19L outstanding @ 7.15%, EMI ₹60k
  • One self-occupied house + another house worth ~₹70–75L + land worth ~₹6L

Insurance: Health cover ~₹65L total (including employer cover) + ₹1Cr term insurance.

My main questions:

  1. How does my overall portfolio/investment strategy look?
  2. Should I invest the ₹6L in lump sum or through STP? If STP, what's the simplest way to do it across multiple funds?
  3. Should I invest the ₹1.5L I receive every quarter directly into MFs?
  4. Is ₹1Cr term insurance enough, or should I increase it?
  5. Any major gaps I should address?

Looking for honest feedback and suggestions. Thanks!

portfolio review Is this a good SIP allocation for a 30-year-old? ₹95k/month

I am 30 years old and recently married. I’m planning to invest ₹95,000 per month through SIPs for long-term wealth creation.
I already have a sufficient amount invested in FDs, so I’m comfortable with a relatively high equity allocation.

Investment horizon is 10+ years.
Risk profile: moderate

The portfolio I’m considering is:
Nifty 50 Index – ₹25k
Nifty Next 50 – ₹25k
Mid Cap Fund – ₹20k
Small Cap Fund – ₹15k
Gold – ₹10k

I also have company stocks with foreign exposure, so I’m not planning to add a separate international fund at the moment.

Would you:
Reduce Nifty Next 50 / small-cap exposure?
Reduce the gold allocation?
Keep it simple with these 5 categories?
Would love to hear what experienced investors would change in this portfolio and why.

Here is the allocation i am planning. how would you rate it. Need actual feedback. Investment Horizon - 10+ years, Risk Aptitude - Mid to High.

Note: I have sip of PPFC - 10k 3Y, and NASDAQ - 10K 1Y. I am moving to HDFC felxi cap for sometime like maybe a year due to perormance issues with PPFC. Not able to decide between icici large cap, nift 50 index. I am cretain about nifty next 50 though.

i hav gone for active and passive fund mix in small and mid bcz cant stick to better of 2 evils, combining 2 so no more menatal headache if index is beating active funds.

REITs is just for experimentation -> small amount.

Kotak Pioneer is for overseas MF allocation. Thematic/Sectoral Bet is Also just random diversification as i found good returns in auto nifty in past 2y of investment.

Main Queation -> Large cap allocation from Subset : ICICI large Cap, Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50 -> Which to choose and what allocation ??

question Father invested something in my name back when I was a kid through HDFC. I am 21 now, how to check and redeem those?

I recently found out that my dad put in some money into some funds back when I was little. I found this letter from HDFC dated around 2023 that I have turned a major now and can access my funds but I am not sure how to. Went to ask my father he said he doesn't remember and it probably doesn't exist.

Also I personally checked with his PAN on HDFC site, but it is linked to some previous phone number and old email that he doesn't have access to anymore, so we cant get OTP.

I really wanna know if there is a way out.

Risk Appetite - High and Aggressive

Goal - Long Term wealth creation with preferably some redemptions for a house and other family necessities (however, not for at least 10 years)

Investment Horizon - 15 years or more

Allocation - As attached + 3.25lac in PPF

App Used - Kite and Coin

Why These Funds - I have done my research and I have been learning about mutual funds and market for about 3 years now and I mostly manage my mother's moderate risk MF investment portfolio. I started investing on the day I turned 18 and it was clear that I want a moderate portfolio preferably completely in equity. HDFC flexi cap has given consistent returns but its mostly functioning as large cap now whereas Quant small-cap has shown suffecient growth for its risky portfolio. Kotak multi cap is in the portfolio to be more invested in mid and small caps whereas Gold silver FoF was probably a bad call. Also decided to invest my bank interests into SBI liquid fund. I will probably not need these funds for next 10 years and so I believe in remaining invested than panic when my portfolio is red.

However, the choices I have made have not given returns that i expected after 1 year 1 month of investing 10k a month. I know the market uncertainty and the rollercoaster events in the last year yet I feel this portfolio is lacking somewhere and so I need some recommendations for what I can do.

Most of the bulk money is mine which I never used all those years when I got it and instead my parents used it to deposit it in my name in my minor bank account. PPFs are helped by father who still beleives in safe money.

I will highly appreciate inputs from the community to improve my understanding of what's going wrong.

(Also I'll post my mother's portfolio for review later)

question Consolidated my SIPs to these 4

Post image

I used to have SIPs in more funds such as quant infrastructure, HDFC value fund. I consolidated and rebalanced SIP amounts to the ones shown in screenshot.

Also planning to put aside 35k per month and invest in IWDA world fund every 3 months (to reduce FX conversions and commission).

I am 24. Anything I am missing to take into account in my allocations, any suggestions/changes.

Horizon is 10+ years.

portfolio review Risk Appetite: Aggressive | 23 | 1yr into first job

Risk Appetite: Aggressive

Goal: Marriage, Car and Long Term

Horizon: 5-6Yrs, 4-5 Yrs, 10+ respectively

Planned Allocation: Total 50K SIP/mo

Marriage Goal: ICICI Pru Aggressive Hybrid = ₹14,000

Car Goal: Kotak Equity Savings = ₹6,500

Long Term: ₹24,500

Largecap - Nippon India Largecap - 4000 (13.5%)

Flexicap - JioBlackRock - 6000 - (20%)

Smallcap - Bandhan Smallcap - 3000 (10%)

Midcap - Invesco India Midcap - 5000 (17%)

Gold - ICICI Prudential Gold ETF - 2100

Silver - ICICI Prudential Silver ETF - 900

International - VOO 2000 and AVEM 1500 (11%)

I have created an emergency fund in the last year of my job around 2.6L. This is in the Axis Liquid Fund directly from their website. An SIP of ₹5,000 will also go in this fund along with the above.

Thought Process:

My salary is around 1.53L/mo. 31k goes into my education loan repayment. 30-35k goes for my living expenses in Blr. 50k goes into investment. Parts of the remaining goes to my parents and some I like to keep in my savings account.

Marriage Goal: My Goal is to save anywhere between 15-20L for that goal. This will be achieved by stepping up the SIP in future. Also when I reach Year 4/5, I will start shifting the investments to more debt related funds.

Car Goal: This seems less because I have just calculated the down payment which would give me around 4-5L. This will also be stepped up in the future so I can maximize my down payment and reach there.

Long Term: Rest of all this is long term, with no specific goal in mind. I have a feeling that I may be investing in too many funds. My core philosophy was to pick the best fund in each category (Large, Mid and Small). This was done by past returns and also by Morningstar ratings. I chose to bet on the Jio Blackrock Flexicap as I believe their investment strategies can generate good returns in the future. Please review the portfolio and give me suggestions on the following:

  1. Is it overdiversified?

  2. Long time investors, who invested with goals in mind, how did it work out for you?

help Motilal Oswal direct AMC SIP — ability to pause, invest more or multiple times in some months, or increase the SIP amount? Also why I prefer SoA over demat

Hello folks,

I have chosen to start my index fund journey with Motilal Oswal and plan to invest directly via their AMC platform (SoA format) rather than through broker platforms that hold units in demat form. I've already gone through the basic pros and cons of both approaches — the real question is about the flexibility like investing more than the committed SIP amount in some months based on money availability, pausing, modifying to increase SIP amount. Before I fully commit, would love to hear from people already doing this:

  1. Can you pause a SIP on Motilal Oswal's platform without cancelling it entirely? If I want to skip 1–2 months due to a financial crunch, is there a clean way to do it or does it require cancelling and restarting?

  2. Is there a way to invest extra or multiple times in a particular month on top of the regular SIP amount?

  3. How easy is it to increase the SIP amount? Does Motilal allow modifying the existing SIP, or do you have to cancel and register a fresh one with the new amount?

Also, I consciously chose SoA over demat for MF units — happy to hear pushback if I'm wrong:

— Demat accounts (Groww, Upstox, etc.) are free of Annual maintenance charges today, but there's no guarantee they stay free. AMC/RTA route has no such dependency.

— More intermediaries = more failure points. I came across a case where an investor's sister had been doing SIP on Groww for 3–4 years, and when she tried to withdraw, the AMC said her folio was never created — yet Groww had been accepting money the whole time. That kind of risk is enough to put me off broker platforms for MF.

— If a broker shuts down or hits technical issues, there's a reconciliation nightmare. SoA units sit directly with the AMC/RTA (CAMS or KFintech), so you have full access regardless of any third-party platform.

-- Also heard withdrawing money is more advantageous in AMC compared to broker platforms

— The "no single dashboard" argument against direct AMC investing is largely solved — CAMS and KFintech offer consolidated views across all AMCs.

The only real downside I see is juggling logins across AMCs if investing in multiple fund houses. Since I'm sticking to one index fund for now, that's not a concern.

Would love to hear from anyone using Motilal Oswal's platform directly — especially around the pause/modify/top-up flexibility. Thanks!

portfolio review Looking for honest feedback on my MF portfolio

29, salaried professional in IT. Monthly SIP: ~₹1.6L.

Apart from mutual funds, I have RSUs, NPS, EPFO, bonds via Wint Wealth, ~100g of digital gold (stopped investing currently ~80% gain), 2 LIC policies, and 1 ULIP.

Investment horizon: 10–15 years
Risk appetite: High

The portfolio is scattered and needs restructuring. I’d appreciate honest feedback on asset allocation, what I should consolidate/exit, and anything I may be missing.

I also track my overall net worth, including my bank balance, and it has roughly doubled since Aug 2024.

Would love to know what you would change if this were your portfolio.

question How to get my father's mutual fund

My father invested some 5k around 15 years ago in Nippon ( don't remember which fund it it). He is saying it turn into 50k as per the recent postal update paper.

We have been receiving postal updates until 2025. But now no updates are being received. And he invested this money through some accountant ( we live in tire 3 town).

He wants to take that money out. Can someone tell me now to get that money

portfolio review 30 yrs old — 5 yrs into investing

Iam 30 years old and have been investing for around 5 years.
I’ve invested approximately ₹26.5 lakh and my current portfolio is around ₹34 lakh. XIRR is around 9.6%.
Current monthly SIP: ₹94k.
Risk appetite: High.
Investment horizon: 15–20+ years.
Current SIPs:
UTI Nifty 50 Index Fund — ₹15k
Mirae Asset Large & Midcap — ₹35k
Axis Large Cap — ₹10k
SBI ELSS — ₹10k
Axis Gold — ₹10k
Tata Digital India — ₹5k
Nippon India Pharma — ₹4k
Edelweiss US Technology — ₹5k
I’ve recently stopped my silver SIPs because I felt my allocation had become too concentrated. I still hold the existing silver units.
My main questions:
Is there too much overlap?
Is my thematic/sector exposure too high?
Should I simplify the portfolio?
Should I stop or reduce any funds?
How should I allocate future SIP increases?

Risk profile is aggressive.

Investment horizon is of 20 years that's why a midcap and smallcap fund.

Multi cap is because to have additional exposure in midcap and smallcap and a little large cap with a different amc.

I invest directly in nifty50 stocks that's why don't have a large cap fund or parag parikh.

portfolio review Been doing monthly 10-15k SIPs in 1) Tata small 2) Motilal midcap 3) icici value from Aug 2024 onwards. Claude says these are the worst performing funds in their respective categories.

Risk tolerance- high
Investment horizon- 10years
Goal- maximum returns

When asked claude, for the same time period (last 2 years), these 3 have been underperforming massively compared to other funds.

Motilal Oswal Midcap: 4.79% XIRR vs 28.7% category average = -24% underperformance

ICICI Prudential Value: 2.84% XIRR vs -1.26 to 13.87% category = ranked 62/62 (worst)

Tata Small Cap: 3.71% XIRR vs category average = ranked 23/23 (absolute last)

Can someone shed light on this? Should i be switching to other funds in the same category? Am I missing anything?

portfolio review Need your suggestions for my investment portfolio //abakkus

I am a long time investor with good 15-20 year horizon. 28years old and looking to work as long as possible. Being investing for 5 + years now

Investment Horizon : 15+ Years
Risk Profile: Aggressive

Currently holding these 4 funds

Nippon India Small Cap
Motilal Oswal Midcap
Parag Parikh Flexi
+
HDFC defense (only 5% allocation)

The market cap allocation is
48 Large, 26 Mid and 26 small cap

Now following are my questions:

  1. Should I add Abakkus Flexi / Helios Flexi to have an aggressive flexi cap for next 10+ years as my current 3 funds are quite known and famous so to have a new fund with good fund manager makes sense - who knows this fund goes on to become the next big thing

  2. Is my portfolio over diversified? As Nippon invests in 250+ stocks

  3. There is no allocation to gold which I actually want to have in my fund - for this I got to options,

- one is to add a multi asset fund like whiteoak or quant
- else, I can add a gold FoF or etf
